4 Definitions of Terminology Fluids In this catalog, the fluids sealed with gaskets are classified as follows. Depending on the type of gasket, however, there are various cases where one type of gasket cannot always be used in the same way for the same fluid. (1) Water type fluids Water, brine, hot water, steam, superheated steam. (2) Oil type fluids Crude oil, volatile oil, naphtha, kerosene, heavy oil, LPG, alcohol, furfural, ethylene glycol, ethylene, prophylene, B-B fraction, butadiene, liquid ammonia, phenol, acrylonitrile, acetone, acetoaldehyde, benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene, cyclohexane, tetramethysulphon, tetraethyl lead, etc. (3) Corrosive fluids Acids such as mineral acids, organic acids, mixed acids, acidic solutions, etc., and alkalis. (4) Gas type fluids Air, nitrogen gas, combustible gas, combustion promoting gas, incombustible gas, toxic gas, etc. Places where there is little danger even with some leakage amount of air, nitrogen gas, etc., may also be considered safe like water type fluids; however, the necessary tightening pressure must be secured. (5) Low-temperature fluids LPG, liquid ethylene, LNG, liquid nitrogen, liquid air, etc. Minimum Seating Stress Normally, the Wm1 and Wm2 (refer to the equation below) specified in JIS B 8265, etc., may be used as the criterion for determining the required seating stress. Wm1= π G 2 P+2πbGmP 4 Wm2=πbGy P = internal pressure G = effective gasket diameter b = effective gasket width m= gasket factor y = minimum designed seating stress In some cases, however, this seating stress may not be sufficient depending on certain types of fluids and or certain types of gaskets. So, among the three seating stresses (Wm1, Wm2, Wm3), the largest value shall be employed as the minimum seating stress. Wm3=3 Ag 3= minimum seating stress Ag = gasket contact area (projected surface area) The minimum seating stresses used in this catalog is "3" in the above equation, and not "y". 2

8 HIGH TEMPERATURE USE SHEETS GASKETS High Temperature Use Sheet Gasket This is newly developed non-asbestos gasketing sheet for high temperature application. Main material of expanded graphite is mixed with aramid fibers, rubber and chemicals and then processed by calendering machine. NA Joint Sheets for High Temperature CLINSIL -Top Features : It can be used from 200 to 260 at 1MPa condition. This gasket can be used for 2MPa saturated steam. Seal performance and chemical resistance are quite similar to conventional asbestos joint sheets. "m" and "y" value are the same as asbestos joint sheets. Maximum outer diameter is 2520 mm and irregular shapes are available. Not like graphite sheet, surface is not scratched by normal handling process. Also good in flexibility. Thanks to the flexibility of expanded graphite, bolt re-tightening is possible. It will not cause corrosion pitching when it is used for stainless steel flange. 100% asbestos-free product. Applications : Gaskets for various types of piping flanges, valves, equipment etc. For cryogenic application like LNG, TOMBO No LN with special treatment is recommended to use. Service Range (For details, please refer to the diagram on page 10) Temperature : Pressure : Saturated steam, hot water See Page 10 Water, salt solutions, weak acid and weak alkali solutions.max.4.0mpa {30Of/F} Oil at 120 or lower. Gaskets should be ring-shaped (Type FR) in thickness of 1.5mm or less. Apply a small amount of the gasket paste (TOMBO No. 9105, 9106) thinly and evenly to the inner edge and both faces of gasket. When gasket is tightened in place, do not tighten more than the tolerable seating stress. Pay attention to the tendency that seating stress becomes greater than the tolerance in the case of flanges in small diameter. Pay attention to the tendency that seating stress at compression failure declines less than the values shown on page11 in the case where gasket is tightened under elevated temperatures (hot bolting).

9 JOINT SHEETS Compressed fiber joint sheet is a gasket made of a uniform mixture of fibrous material, filler, rubber and chemicals which is hot rolled by calendering to obtain smooth sheets. The sheets are processed to the required shapes and dimensions for applications in equipment, etc., in a wide range of industries. General-purpose NA Joint Sheets CLINSIL -Brown Features : Inorganic filler is added to inorganic fibers and aramid fibers; then oil-resistant synthetic rubber is added as binder to form brown NA (non-asbestos) joint sheets which contain absolutely no asbestos. This gasket can be used for stainless steel flange since leachable halogens are little. Large diameter gasket cut from the sheet of 3,810mm x3,810mm (9S size) max. in monolithic form is available. 12 Cautions Flange Finish The recommended surface roughness of flange is as follows : For liquids 6.3 Ra For gas 3.2 Ra Seating Stress The seating stress should be one the maximum value, as shown below: a. Wm1 according to JIS B b. Wm2 according to JIS B c. Minimum seating stress required for sealing liquids. For water, oil : 14.7N/E For gas : 34.3N/E Preventive measures for permeation leakage of gaseous fluids The joint sheet has disadvantage that it has a high tendency to have permeation leakage in the case of gaseous fluids since it is not physically dense material due to the characteristics of its material component. Apply a small amount of gasket paste uniformly on the surface and inner diameter. Apply enough seating stress.(please refer above.) Gaskets should be ring-shaped (FR shape) with a thickness of 1.5A or less. When an air tight test is required, 2-3 hours after tightening. Non-asbestos joint sheet shall not be used for toxic gas or high vacuum sealing. Non-asbestos Joint Sheets for stainless steel flanges TOMBO No.1993, 1995, 1120 are recommended for this service since leachable halogens are little. Gasket paste (TOMBO No.9120) is not required generally. However, if paste is used, please consult us. Compression failure Fastening force If excessive tightening force is applied to nonasbestos joint sheets, compression failure may occur. When tightening joint sheets, refer to the following maximum tolerable seating stress. Maximum tolerable seating stress NA joint sheet Thickness Without paste TOMBO No. A N/E With paste N/E Value inside ( ) is for TOMBO No Due to low physical strength of NA joint sheets, special precautions should be made to avoid uneven tightening. Combined use of gasket paste Do not apply solvent-based liquid packing (which makes gaskets swell), silicon-based oil or grease (which makes gaskets slippery) on NA joint sheets as gasket paste, as they may cause compression failure at a pressure lower than the above values of seating stress. If using gasket paste, TOMBO No or 9106 is recommended. Please consult with us regarding other pastes. Installation Tighten bolts from side to side around the joint in a star like crossing pattern. All bolts should be tightened in four to five increments, according proper bolting patterns. Immediate tightening can cause leaks and compression damage Bolt tightening sequence Gasket Thickness We recommend the use of gasket thickness depending on the nominal diameter of the flange as follows. 150A (6B) or below: 1.5A 200A (8B) and above: 3.0A Caution We recommend a thickness of 1.5At regardless of the consideration above if TOMBO No.1995 is used for steam or hot water at the temperature of over 100. We recommend a thickness of 1.5At regardless of the consideration above if TOMBO No.1993 is used for steam or hot water at the temperature of over 120. Placing orders Sheets Please specify the thickness, width and length. Example: 1.5t or 1.5t1S. Cut gaskets In the case of flanges for JIS or JPI (ANSI) piping, etc., please specify pressure rating (class), nominal diameter, flange type (RF or FF) and gasket thickness. Example: JIS 10K50A, RF, 1.5t, JPI class 1502B, RF, 1.5t. Please provide a drawing for non-standard dimensions. Caution These joint sheet gaskets contain organic materials; therefore they are not recommended for combustion promoting application gas (oxygen gas). For further details, please refer to the separate handling instructions JOINT SHEETS 11

23 VORTEX GASKETS Notes for Designing Applicable flanges (1) Since Vortex gaskets require a comparatively high tightening stress, do not use for lowpressure flanges (JIS 2K, 5K, vacuum lines, etc.). (2) Only TOMBO No AL Series Vortex gaskets can be used for aluminum flanges. Necessity of inner ring The function of the inner ring is to prevent the gasket from buckling or damage, to withstand high tightening stress. When installing a gasket on a flange with no means of restraining support toward the inside, inner ring types should always be used in the following cases: (1) With a low friction filler such as GRASEAL and NAFLON. (2) When the pressure rating of the flange is class900 (63k) or above. (3) When the nominal diameter of the flange is 650A (26B) or above. 24 Gasket seating stress (1) For general liquids : The calculation results Wm1 and Wm2, stipulated in JIS B 8265, etc., shall be calculated using m and y. The largest stress obtained from the calculation shall be the required seating stress. (2) For fluids that tend to leak: For gas type fluids, leakage may occur if only seating stress calculated by JIS B8265,etc. is applied. In addition to Wm1 and Wm2, the seating stress (Wm3) shall also be calculated in accordance with the following 3 per unit of gasket contact surface. The largest stress from the calculation shall be used as the required seating stress. Bolt materials Since Vortex gasket require comparatively high tightening stress, high tension bolt such as SNB 7 or over is recommended for bolt specification. VORTEX GASKETS Seating stress of gasket Gasket type TOMBO No.1804-GR Series TOMBO No.1804-NA Series TOMBO No.9090 Series TOMBO No GS -GM -GH TOMBO No.1809 Series Gasket factor 3.00 notes:(1),(2) Specified by JIS B 2205 (1991), JIS B (1995) and JPI-7S (3) Specified by test results from NICHIAS Corporation Cautions Storage 1. Store gaskets indoors in a cool, dark place in the original wrapping. 2. Do not stand gaskets upright or hang them. 3. Do not bend, twist, push or press gaskets. Installation 1. Before installing a gasket, first clean the surface of the flange and check the surface is free of foreign matters, scratches, etc. 2. Do not handle gaskets roughly. Since large diameter gasket is easily damaged (dropping off of windings), it should be handled very carefully by several persons. 3. Place gaskets carefully in correct position. 4. In principle, there is no need to apply gasket paste. But, if considered necessary NAFLON paste (TOMBO No. 9400) is recommended for temperature conditions of 300 or lower, 5. Do not re-use gaskets. Minimum design seating stress Minimum seating stress (for gas sealing) (3) 3 N/E N/E (Class 150) (Class 300) 49.0 (Class 600) Tightening To obtain uniform seating stress, apply the tightening load (torque) in 4-5 stages, proceeding diagonally as shown in the diagram below. Gradually increase the strength of the tightening load until the prescribed seating stress is obtained. After that further tighten by proceeding clockwise 1-2 turns. Basic-type Vortex Basic-type Vortex gaskets (including irregular-type gaskets) should be carefully handled as they deform easily with even with slight external force. Even if gaskets are somewhat deformed, they may still be fitted into the groove on the flange and used, depending on the condition of the gasket. In such cases, please consult with us Bolt tightening sequence 23

41 GRASEAL GASKETS Expanded graphite (GRASEAL) is a material processed from pure natural graphite by chemical treatment and heat treatment at more than This material provides outstanding heat and chemical resistance, and is excellent for gaskets with high flexibility and low creep. Features 1. Sealability remains almost same throughout a range of cryogenic to high temperature (400). 2. Excellent chemical resistance to almost all liquids other than strong oxidizing acids, etc. 3. Since cold flow and creep property are minor, it is not affected by over-tightening of gasket. Expanded Graphite Gaskets GRASEAL Gasket TOMBO No.1200/1210/1215 GRASEAL gaskets are cut from GRASEAL sheets or GRASEAL sheets with metal reinforcement. There are four types in accordance with the application. GRASEAL GASKETS TOMBO No GRASEAL Gasket Cut gasket from expanded graphite sheet (GRASEAL sheets) to be used for pipe flanges and valve bonnets, etc. This type is only recommended for small diameter gaskets due to its low mechanical strength. TOMBO No A GRASEAL Gasket MI-A Type 316 stainless steel sheet (0.1 mm thick) with hooks is sandwiched with GRASEAL sheets and then cut into specific sizes. Mechanical strength is high. As hook height is low, less damege (such as scrathing etc) to flanges. TOMBO No GRASEAL Gasket PM GRASEAL sheets are adhered to both sides of type 304 stainless steel sheet of 0.2 A thick. High in mechanical strength and easy to handle. As it can also be cut into complicated shapes, this type of gasket is widely used in various industries. TOMBO No A Grsaseal gasket PM-A The stainless steel sheet use in TOMBO No has been changed to SUS316 steel (50 micron). Applications For piping flanges, heat exchangers, valve bonnets, etc., in various industries and for special shape flanges for liquid level gauges. Since TOMBO No.1200 gaskets are fragile, they are not recommended for narrow width gaskets or large-diameter gaskets. They are only recommended for nominal size of 4 inches or less. 2. The surfaces of GRASEAL Gaskets are easily damaged, which can result in leakage; therefore, handle with care. 3. Due to its nature, a very small amount of leakage is inevitable. When very high level of gas sealing is required, use TOMBO No.1215-T, 1215-AT which feature non-permeation treatment. (maximum service temp. 260) 4. In general, GRASEAL Gaskets cannot be used with the fluids listed in the table on page When handling TOMBO No.1210-A/ 1215/ 1215-A gaskets, pay attention not to scratch your fingers on the metal reinforcement. 40

47 PTFE Enveloped Gaskets NAFLON PTFE Cushion Gasket TOMBO No.9010 The core of non-asbestos joint sheets, non-asbestos paper, etc., which have high cushioning properties, are covered with a thin PTFE film. This gasket is more resistant to creep than a PTFE cut gasket (TOMBO No. 9007). Due to the PTFE film covering the inner diameter and sealing surface of the gasket, there is no contamination of fluids. Furthermore, due to the excellent chemical resistance and solvent resistance of the PTFE film, this gasket can be used for a wide range of applications in various fields such as fine chemicals, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, foodstuffs, and general industries. Applications Various corrosive fluids, organic solvents. Fluids where contamination is not allowed. Where electrical insulation is required. TOMBO No NA-A-5, 9010-NA-R-A-5 Applicable standards JPI-7S-75 NAFLON GASKETS Gasket construction TOMBO No NA-A-7, NA-A-8, NA-A-9 Gasket type Cross section Construction and explanation A This is a standard enveloped gasket produced by slitting a sheet of PTFE and inserting cushion material, as shown. B AS This is an enveloped gasket for large diameters (generally 1000 mm dia. or larger). Oval gaskets are also available. Since there is a heat seal in one place, sealability is slightly inferior to that of type A. The use of NAFLON paste (TOMBO No. 9400) is recommended. The same as type A but with a square inner section. There is little space inside the gasket, so there is less possibility of damage by the rapid expansion of air due to temperature rises. Appropriate design of the inside diameter reduces the accumulation of liquid and smoothes the flow in the fluid. R-A R-AS The same as types A and AS but with the outer periphery sealed. Fluid from the exterior cannot penetrate or leak into the core. Because of this construction, even when used in vacuum lines, the covering strongly resists being pulled inside. Since there is no turning of the covering, setting is smooth even when the flange gap is narrow. 46 Cautions Please refer to page 49.

50 Service Range NAFLON PTFE Cushion Gasket (TOMBO No Series) Cautions for NAFLON Flange Finish The recommended surface roughness of metal flange is 6.3mRa. For Gas Sealing To seal gases, TOMBO No. 9400, NAFLON Paste shall be applied. For Installation Before setting the gasket, make sure that flange surface is free from foreign material or scratch. When setting the gasket, make sure to have enough distance between flanges. If gasket is forced to insert, it may cause leakage by damaging the gasket or peeling off of PTFE envelope. If enough distance between flanges are not available, "R" type is recommended. This type will prevent damage and peeling off of PTFE envelope during installation. For core types of 6 and 8, seating stress at compression failure declines when the gasket becomes wet. Therefore, store the gaskets in water-proof bags. In addition, take precautions so that gasket does not become wet by rain after installation. If the gasket is not tightened enough, soap-water from pneumatic testing or rain-water could permeate and soften the non-asbestos paper, pushing non-asbestos paper out of the gasket. Take precautions since in such cases, the seating stress on the gasket decreases and leakage can occur. Do not reuse materials that have already been used once. Seating Stress Seating stress of gasket shall be controlled to maintain 29.4N/mm 2 max. If gasket seating stress becomes more than this value, jointing sheet of the core may be destroyed. Uneven tightening also results excess seating stress partly and will cause for compressive failure. Special attention shall be paid for bolt tightening. For Fluoropolymer lined piping, we set recommended tightening torque size by size. For details, please consult us. PTFE Cushion Gasket Air tight test When air tight test is conducted after installation, bubble may be observed between PTFE envelope and core material. This is the air accumulated inside of cushioning material or between the cushioning material and PTFE envelop. Especially for core type 6 and 8, these core materials have such tendency. So, air tight test shall be conducted well after internal pressure is applied. Others Bolt tightening may be loosen in long time or after heat cycles. Bolt tightening shall be checked periodically and when bolt is loosen, re-tightening shall be done by initial bolt torque. When thermal stress or bending stress is repeatedly applied to the flanges, gasket seating stress is easily reduced. This gasket is not recommended for such part. Cautions for selection of PTFE Cushion gasket Some of the fluids may permeate to inside of the gasket thru PTFE envelope. Especially nitric acid, ethylene chloride, halogens (chroline, bromine, etc.), molten sulfur and monochloroacetic acid may attack the cushioning material by permeation in long time and as a result, gasket function will be lost. In such case, gasket shall be changed periodically or use PTFE cut gasket instead. When type "A", "B" and "AS" type is used for vacuum service, PTFE envelope may be pulled in. In such case, "R" type is recommended. Due to its shape of "A" type, fluid may remain in the space between flanges and gasket. To avoid this fluid remaining, "AS" type with appropriate gasket inner diameter shall be used. For plastic, glass and rubber lined pipings, each flange has different gasket dimensions although flange standard is JIS standard. Please consult us for proper gasket dimensions if the gaskets are used for such pipings. NAFLON GASKETS 49
