It represented a hugey exciting direction for Outander. Designed from the ground up to cater for hybrid pug-in technoogy aunched in Apri 2014, the new car is very grown-up and impressivey refined. The third-generation Outander combines the practicaity and fexibiity of a sports utiity vehice with the uxury and refinement of the word s finest famiy cars. Having sod more than 950,000 Outanders wordwide since 2001, has been deighted with the way the new version, the safest and most environmentay-friendy mode produced to date, has been received. 5 UK Information pack 2. Design The current-generation Outander is the first Mitsubishi to fuy show off the Japanese maker s new design anguage. The first new car from the company since the ASX in 2010, it was definitey worth the wait from the point of view of ooks aone. New ook New Outander offers stye and substance and it s a car where beauty is definitey more than skin deep. A goodooking vehice, appeaing and imposing, new Outander is designed to make the most of the advanced engineering contained within, resuting in a car that s easy on the eye from the outside and attractivey aid out inside. A wethought-out range of enhancements has been made to the car for 2014, such as a new front grie and fog amp surrounds, new front and rear skid pates and new whee arch garnish. Modes from GX3 upwards come with new 18-inch aoys, a new LED ight custer and eye-catching siver roof rais. Whether through its high fanks, raised betine, uncuttered surfaces, strong shoudering or soft-contoured bumpers, the Outander offers a reassuring sense of quiet protection and safety to its occupants. It is a car of substance, devoid of cheap stying thris and designed for the sort of ong-hau traveing its innovative powertrain wi aow. Yes, it s a big car, but it manages to ook and fee dynamic: whether through the aforementioned soft contouring or through the eegant shouder ines that seem to stretch its profie. The same appies to the stying at the rear where horizonta trim between the rear amps adds visua width, giving the car a distinctive, panted stance. In addition, the vehice s weight has been reduced by 100kg, the washer nozzes have been paced under the back edge of the bonnet to prevent freezing, and a arge pastic pate on the underside of the engine improves aerodynamics beneath the vehice. 6 UK Information pack 3. On the inside Just as its exterior design suggests stye and substance, the new Outander s interior takes the driver and passengers to a word where quaity comes first. The dashboard has a simpe and tastefu design and is buit from high-quaity materias. The Mitsubishi Outander provides a driving experience that s second to none. Pioting this car provides a feeing of confidence and comfort. To begin with, of course, the driver enjoys the eevated position for which the Outander has been famous since Mitsubishi Motors Corporation introduced its first crossover 11 years ago. The dashboard enveopes the driver, and there are ergonomic steering whee contros and high-resoution, easy-to-read instrument dispays. Carity, confidence and quaity are the watchwords. Generous proportions New Outander has the same footprint as its predecessor, but Mitsubishi s packaging engineers have been hard at work cramming the car with even more ingenious features. These hep to enhance the vehice s practicaity, widen its appea and utimatey, of course, attract more customers. The engineers were tod in no uncertain terms: The new-generation Outander had to be more accommodating than the previous Outander and even more comfortabe. In addition, it had to incorporate the technoogy for the PHEV variant and be ighter than the previous Outander. A ta order? Certainy. But Mitsubishi s engineers were more than up to the chaenge. And their hard work during the vehice s deveopment phase has resuted in the deivery of a stunning range of improvements. Cever second-row seating The second row of seating has a fip-up cushion and foding backrest, aowing for a 1.69m-ong foor when the second and third rows of seats are foded down (335mm more than the previous Outander). Meanwhie, the second-row seats now side over a 250mm range (vs. 80mm for the outgoing car) and provide more space for the third-row passengers on seven-seat versions. 7 Practica new third-row seating The a-new third row of seats has been re-engineered competey, offering the rear-most passengers an even more comfortabe journey. Whie the previous-generation Outander empoyed a bench system, third-row occupants in the new mode benefit from propery-sprung seats great on ong journeys. There are aso adjustabe headrests; recining backrest; a simper Fod & Stow operation; and a 10kg weight saving. They even spit-fod in a fashion, aiding practicaity. When the third row is fuy foded, the ength of cargo area increases to 872mm. Cever touches To compete its practica interior, the new Outander has been fitted with a cever under-foor cargo box to store the roing uggage cover when not in use, and compared with the previous Outander, a more convenient taigate with power operation repaces the od car s spit taigate. 8 4. Engines and transmissions Outander comes with just one engine option Mitsubishi s high-tech 2.2-itre Cean Diese engine. It beongs to the 4N1 famiy of high-tech Cean Diese engines. Importanty, it wi aow Mitsubishi Motors to respond quicky and fexiby to future market trends; to keep firmy in contro of its own technoogy; and to end its dependence on outside partners, whether in terms of suppy or deveopment. 4N1 is an utra-efficient famiy of auminium, doube overhead camshaft (DOHC) engines. The 16v, 4-cyinder, common-rai, direct-injection, ow-impact Euro 5 diese units feature one of the owest compression ratios in the industry (14.9:1). Mitsubishi Motors has aso made sure there is enough buit-in fexibiity to ensure that the engine easiy satisfies Euro 5b emissions requirements as we as other egisation outside the EU, if needed. 9 Automatic Stop & Go system Doing its bit to keep emission eves as ow as possibe, Mitsubishi s Automatic Stop & Go (AS&G) system is introduced for the first time in an Outander. The atest generation of AS&G is now equipped with an Inteigent Battery Sensor providing continuous operation by precise monitoring of the battery-charging status. And it s even cever enough to te you how ong you were stationary for on your journey. Transmissions Two gearboxes are avaiabe with the new-generation Outander: Six-speed manua The six-speed manua gearbox avaiabe in the new Outander has been deveoped with ower emissions in mind, but not at the cost of driving dynamics. The six-speed transmission has a number of points to recommend it: The fourth, fifth and sixth gear ratios have been optimised for better fue economy, and the side bearings have been paced on the shift contro shaft and the shift rai to reduce friction and wear. There s tripe-synchromesh engineering on first, second and third gears, and doube synchro on fourth gear has been adopted to improve the shifting quaity. Second, third and sixth gear teeth surfaces have benefited from a honing treatment to reduce gear noise. And to be extra environmentay-friendy, the six-speed gearboxes use technoogicay-advanced chromium and zinc-free materias. INVECS-II six-speed automatic Another major difference with the outgoing Outander is the avaiabiity of a conventiona six-speed automatic gearbox repacing the previous twin-cutch TC-SST. Three main reasons ed to this change: An automatic gearbox wi offer much wider appications for a goba markets. A hydrauic torque converter-equipped system such as this wi provide drivers with smoother operation, especiay in markets where the a-terrain capabiities of the vehice are paramount. The new system is designed to improve stabiity, traction, fue economy and emissions, and combines the Eectronic Contro Couping and the 4WD ECU which contro it. One cever new feature is Yaw Rate Feedback Contro which inputs the Eectronic Contro Couping, judging the vehice s cornering movements accuratey from the yaw rate sensor for sharper steering. More precise than the previous system, this new set-up aso contributes to the new-generation Outander s environmenta performance. Bringing with it a smarter 4WD ECO mode, the new system removes the need for a traditiona 2WD mode atogether. Most of the time, 4WD ECO mode powers the car through the two front whees, but when the road conditions demand it, the system inteigenty transmits the driving force to the rear whees as we providing a higher eve of active safety whie managing better fue economy and ower emissions than the fu-time 4WD AUTO mode. 11 The modes avaiabe are: 4WD ECO The high-efficiency mode ordinariy just powers the front whees, but when the whees ose traction, 4WD engages. 4WD AUTO This is the norma mode and gives an exceent off-road performance in various conditions. 4WD LOCK High-traction mode for the most demanding of environments. 6. Handing and safety Fine driving dynamics The outgoing Outander has aways been praised for the manner in which it drives. For the new Outander, Mitsubishi has worked hard on making a car that handes even more capaby. A key advantage of making the new Outander ighter than the previous car is that ess weight improves dynamics and owers the centre of gravity. In addition, improvement work has been carried out in a number of areas: Suspension For the front suspension, a twin sub-frame has been introduced to increase stiffness improving handing and stabiity as we as crash performance. Newy-designed strut top mounts reduce noise, vibration and harshness, and in doing so, enhance ride comfort. Finey-tuned springs and shock absorbers compete improvements at the front of the car. Meanwhie, the rear suspension has a passive toe-steering effect thanks to new bade-design traiing arms. There are aso newy-designed stamping arms to reduce unsprung weight, and extended toe contro inks to provide smoother suspension stroke feeing and, again, enhance ride comfort. Safety It s a generay accepted fact that through increased safety reguations, cars have inexoraby gained weight over the past few decades. Now, of course, manufacturers are faced with the dua chaenge of meeting ever-more-stringent crash reguations and reducing the weight of their vehices in order to reduce emissions. The new-generation Outander is a case in point: sti a arge D-Segment crossover, it adds significant new safety features and equipment, but has ost around 100 kg against the previous mode. 12 In the most important area of safety, Mitsubishi s engineers investigated three different areas: Active Safety, Passive Safety and Advanced Safety. Active Safety This is a carefu deveopment of the previous-generation Outander s architecture and safety equipment, incuding the much-praised Eectronic Stabiity Programme (ESP) and more. Passive Safety This is the atest deveopment of Mitsubishi s proprietary RISE system (Reinforced Impact Safety Evoution). RISE Mitsubishi s RISE is a unibody design that brings dramatic advances in muti-directiona impact safety performance. In essence, RISE is meant to disperse energy oads during side and rear crashes and contros distortion, enhances occupant protection and aso heps to protect the fue system in the event of a rear impact. New-Generation Outander safety features The newy-adopted front twin ongitudina subframe aso contributes to crash protection with better energy absorption during a fronta crash. Upper and under-foor stringers (eft and right) reduce cabin deformation during a fronta crash. The probabiity of the driver receiving a ower eg injury is reduced by the recession of the pedas during a highspeed fronta crash. The front passenger seat bet is now fitted with a doube pre-tensioner. The eve of head protection for pedestrians is improved through a redesigning of the bonnet, front wings and open ower windscreen area. A new energy-absorbing front bumper structure reduces the chances of a pedestrian receiving a eg injury. Super-wide xenon HID headights are 1.4 times more powerfu than standard ones great for night-time driving. Advanced Safety The new Outander boasts a range of sophisticated systems. Adaptive Cruise Contro (ACC) n The ACC system uses a 77GHz radar instaed in the front grie to measure the reative distance and speed of the vehice in front. 12 We re worth foowing...

13 ACC maintains a safe distance between the vehice in front, within a detection range of up to 200 metres. The distance ACC uses to foow the vehice ahead can be set by the driver, using one of three avaiabe settings. When there is no vehice in front, ACC works as a reguar cruise contro system, maintaining the speed set by the driver. When ACC detects a vehice in front, however, and that vehice sows down, ACC wi reduce the speed of the Outander. When that vehice speeds up again, ACC wi acceerate the Outander, but wi not exceed the maximum speed previousy set by the driver. If the vehice in front sows down and stops, ACC wi aso sow down and bring the Outander to a safe and steady standsti. Once the Outander has stopped, ACC wi then reease the brakes after approximatey one second, returning fu contro of the vehice to the driver. The wide azimuth range radar used by Mitsubishi in the Outander offers enhanced performance when cornering and eary detection of vehices cutting in during ACC operation. Forward Coision Mitigation System (FCM): The FCM system, utiising the same 77GHz radar used by the ACC system, detects obstaces on the road in front of the Outander and wi automaticay appy the brakes when necessary to hep prevent a coision or to hep reduce the severity of a coision. When the possibiity of a front coision arises, the driver is warned through a buzzer and a ight in the instrument pane. FCM wi aso increase the brake pressure in the circuit. If the driver then hits the brakes, the Brake Assist function wi activate earier than norma. When the risk of a coision becomes highy possibe, a two-stage Automatic Braking function is engaged: First stage: Low braking pressure is automaticay appied, prompting the driver to avoid the coision. Second stage: High braking pressure is automaticay appied to hep mitigate or avoid the coision. The new Outander benefits from braking pre-fi, which is unique in the Mitsubishi range. 14 FCM can hep to avoid a coision when the Outander is driving at ess than 18mph and the system detects a stationary object. With respect to other moving vehices, FCM can aso hep to avoid a coision when the speed difference between the vehice being detected and the Outander is ess than 18mph. Where the speed difference is greater than 18mph, FCM cannot hep prevent a coision, but can hep to reduce the severity of that coision. Lane Departure Warning system (LDW) The LDW system, utiising a camera instaed behind the windscreen, heps the driver maintain his ane of trave and avoid inadvertent ane departure caused by distraction, fatigue, etc. LDW operates ony at speeds above 40mph and invoving traffic anes wider than 2.6 metres. Speed imiter The imiter has a minimum setting of 19mph. It restricts the specified speed and prevents the car going above it. An aarm is sounded when the safe speed cannot be maintained. Brakes The brakes feature an improved power braking system with hydrauic Brake Assist. Five-star safety The new Outander has been awarded a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. 7.
