3 STATE OF MISSOURI 2008 MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS Introduction This codebook documents datasets describing motor-vehicle traffic accidents that occurred in the State of Missouri during calendar year The datasets were developed by the Transportation Data Center at the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) from data supplied by the Missouri State Patrol. The original data in the Missouri STARS protocol (State Traffic Accident Reporting System) have been formatted into three rectangular datasets documenting accident level, vehicle level, and person level information elements. The characteristics of these datasets are shown in the following table MISSOURI DATASETS DATASET KEY VARIABLES CASES Accident MOCØ8ACC ,888 Vehicle MOCØ8VEH 1-77, , ,492 Person MOCØ8PER 1-77, , , ,795 The letter "C" in the dataset descriptor represents "CENSUS" since these datasets describe all motor vehicle accidents that occurred in the state during calendar year 2008 that were recorded by the State Patrol. The codebook itself is divided into three sections that document the accident, vehicle, and person records, respectively. Univariate frequencies and frequency percentages displayed in each section were derived from the corresponding dataset (i.e., accident frequencies from MOCØ8ACC, person frequencies from

4 Missouri 2008 Introduction MOCØ8PER, etc.). An index located at the end of the codebook gives the variable number and code value where each word used in a variable name or code value definition may be located. Certain English connectives (e.g., "the", "and", "but", "while", etc.), proper names such as county names and police agency names, and other common words not likely to be of value in an index are not included. Vehicle Identification Numbers were decoded using the Highway Loss Data Institute s VINDICATOR program Version The model year entered on the police report was compared to the model year decoded from the VIN and those model years that did not match, as well as any model year greater than 2009, were coded missing data on all VIN-derived variables. While every effort has been made to provide accurate, reliable data, inconsistencies may arise from the source data or from the reformatting procedures used. Consequently, the Data Center cannot guarantee the accuracy of the data, but will try to correct any discrepancies that are found. Please notify the Center of any errors that you may uncover (or of any suggestions or comments that you may have concerning the data or codebook) by calling the Transportation Data Center (734) or by ing TDC-UMTRI@umich.edu.
