3 STATE OF MISSOURI 1996 MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS Introduction This code book documents data sets describing motor-vehicle traffic accidents that occurred in the State of Missouri during calendar year The data sets were developed by the Transportation Data Center at the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) from data supplied by the Missouri State Patrol. The original data in the Missouri STARS protocol (State Traffic Accident Reporting System) have been formatted into three rectangular data sets documenting accident level, vehicle level, and person level information elements. The characteristics of these data sets are shown in the following table MISSOURI DATA SETS DATA SET KEY VARIABLES CASES Accident MOC96ACC ,164 Person MOC96PER 1-75, , , ,120 Vehicle MOC96VEH 1-75, , ,260 The letter "C" in the data set descriptor represents "CENSUS" since these data sets describe all motor vehicle accidents that occurred in the state during calendar year 1996 that were recorded by the State Patrol. The code book itself is divided into three sections that document the accident, vehicle, and person records, respectively. Univariate frequencies and frequency percentages displayed in each section were derived from the corresponding data set (i.e., accident frequencies from MOC96ACC, person frequencies from

4 Missouri 1996 Introduction MOC96PER, etc.). An index located at the end of the code book gives the variable number and code value where each word used in a variable name or code value definition may be located. Certain English connectives (e.g., "the", "and", "but", "while", etc.), proper names such as county names and police agency names, and other common words not likely to be of value in an index are not included. While every effort has been made to provide accurate, reliable data, inconsistencies may arise from the source data or from the reformatting procedures used. Consequently, the Data Center cannot guarantee the accuracy of the data, but will try to correct any discrepancies that are found. Please notify the Center of any errors that you may uncover (or of any suggestions or comments that you may have concerning the data or code book) by calling the Transportation Data Center (734) or by ing TDC-UMTRI@umich.edu. For more information about our full line of services, please visit our website: The most current TDC codebooks are available there in PDF format and codebooks can now be ordered online. August 2006
