8 AIR HOSE AND FITTINGS 1 FUNCTION Air brake tubes and hoses are the arteries of a vehicles air system. Their purpose is to transfer air from the air tanks to valves and brake chambers. They are designed to carry the correct volume and pressure to assure balanced effective braking. Tubing and hose are used for different purposes even though they perform the same task. Tubing is manufactured out of stiff materials like copper and nylon and are used on the vehicle where no movement occurs. Hose is manufactured to work with the vehicles suspension, connections, and points of movement. Layers of synthetic rubber and synthetic reinforcement give hose its strength and flexibility as illustrated in the image below. INSPECTION An air leak is usually a sign that a hose needs repair or replacement. Hearing an air leak is not the only reason for replacing an air hose. Prevention of your vehicle being put "out of service" on the road is another reason. "Out of service" criteria is in place to prevent problems associated with hose failure on the highway. Brake lock up, tire flat spotting, brake imbalance and accidents are a few of those problems. The published out of service criteria includes the following reasons: Bulging and/or swelling with air applied. Improper splice - hose forced over pipe and using hose clamps to secure. Crimp, twist or turn causing restrictions. Cut, wear, damage through rubber cover and outer reinforcement ply. 3RD & 4TH SPIRALS OF SYNTHETIC REINFORCEMENT 1ST & 2ND SPIRALS OF SYNTHETIC REINFORCEMENT COVER LAYER Some manufacturers will use small vent holes to eliminate air from between the cover layer and VENT IMPROPER CRIMP the third and fourth spiral reinforcement layers. These vent holes will cause no problems in the life of the hose or the safety of the vehicle, and do not represent an "out of service" condition. BULGE STRANDS OF REINFORCEMENT IMPROPER CRIMP MERITOR AIR HOSE ASSEMBLY PART NUMBERS Meritor Air Hose Assembly part numbers consist of a four digit base number followed by a dash and two additional digits. The four digit base number designates the size of the air hose and type of end fittings. The last two digits designate the overall length of the hose, per "A" above. Change air filter element, local or engine. Kinked air hose. Vacuum from engine turbocharger when the compressor air intake is hooked to the engine air intake. Use inlet check valve assembly. 2 Restricted or kinked oil return line. Return line size must be a minimum of 5/8" O.D. Check for silicone buildup in the drain hole. Excessive engine rotation may require a bottom drain on the compressor. 3 Poorly filtered air. Check for defective intake components. 4 Improper cooling. Restricted water flow, maximum coolant flow plumbed into the block and out the head. (Opposite sides) 5 No air dryer in the system. Drain reservoir tanks daily. 6 Excessive duty cycle. Check for system leakage, inadequate compressor size for vehicle application. 7 Excessive engine oil pressure and/or crankcase pressure. 8 Compressor worn out or defective 9 Restricted air discharge line - build up of oil heating to a hard carbon fibre. 10 Loose pulley or worn drive gear components. 11 Lack of lubrication has created excessive bearing clearances. 12 Mounting bracket vibration 13 Carbon formation on the top of piston/bottom of cylinder head. 14 Air dryer purge valve stuck open 15 Defective unloader mechanism and/or governor 16 Braided discharge line heat fatigued. Check with a soapy solution. 17 Discharge valve leakage. Excessive system leakage. 18 Governor reservoir or unloader line restricted. 19 Reservoir volume reduced. Drain water from system. 20 Brakes out of adjustment. Increased volume usage. 21 Improper cooling. Restricted water flow, maximum coolant flow plumbed into block and out the head (Opposite sides) 22 Insufficient air blast cooling. Clean cooling fans. 23 Carbon comes from heat. Look for restrictions. Early engines did not utilize inner coolers. As a result, only clean, dry air is supplied to the air system. This helps prevent freezeups and prolongs the life of air system components. Cartridges are now offered in two different types; standard and oil coalescing. Standard cartridges remove moisture from the air via the desiccant material in the unit, while coalescing cartridges remove moisture as well as oil aerosol and particulate matter as air passes through filters in the unit. If a vehicle is equipped with an oil coalescing cartridge, this should be maintained for the life of the vehicle or contamination and/or damage of other components connected to the airline is possible including brake valves, emission controls, automated manual transmissions and more. 83 AIR DRYERS MERITOR ALL-MAKES AIR DRYER TEST PROCEDURE 3 Supply Port STEP 1 Plug the check valve to the air tank using a 1/2 NP plug. STEP 2 Load supply line with shop air and allow unit to fill and stop. STEP 3 After the dryer is completely filled, use another supply line and attach it to the control port. The dryer should purge out the bottom and stop within 20 seconds. Repeat the process two times. If the dryer stops purging, the unit is functioning to proper specifications. Note to Tech On a truck, the compressor stops pumping when the governor sends air to the control port of the dryer. When the control port is activated, the supply air can be removed. 84 AIR DRYERS AIR DRYER TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE 3 POP OFF VALVE IS BLOWING AT THE AIR DRYER OR THE AIR COMPRESSOR 1 Restrictions between air dryer and supply reservoir. 2 Dryer cartridge needs to be serviced. 3 Discharge line from the compressor to the air dryer plugged or frozen. 4 Malfunction of the safety valve. CANNOT BUILD SYSTEM AIR PRESSURE 1 Inlet and outlet connections are reversed. 2 The check valve between the dryer and first tank may be restricted. Excessive bends in discharge line, oil turns to carbon in 3 line, water freezes in line between compressor and first tank. 4 Kinked or blocked discharge line. DESICCANT MATERIAL BEING EXPELLED FROM AIR DRYER OR BECOMES PASTE LIKE APPEARANCE 1 Air dryer no securely mounted to frame causing vibration. 2 Malfunction or saturated desiccant. 3 Compressor passing excessive oil. 4 Chemicals such as alcohol added to discharge line before the air dryer. CONSTANT EXHAUST OF THE PURGE VALVE 1 Purge valve internal leak. 2 Compressor failing to unload. 3 Purge control line connected to wrong place, reservoir or wrong port on governor. 4 Purge valve frozen open, check heater is working. OIL PRESENT AT THE AIR DRYER 1 Time for regular maintenance. 2 Air compressor needs repair. Remember some oil is normal, if oil is getting past dryer 3 to first air tank, compressor repair must be done and air dryer serviced. NOISE IN AIR DRYER DURING COMPRESSOR CHARGING CYCLE 1 Defective check valve in air dryer. 2 Leaking turbo cut-off valve. 3 Leaking purge valve control piston o-ring. AIR DRYER IS CONSTANTLY CYCLING OR PURGING 1 Test fitting, hoses, lines and connections with a soapy water. Tighten or replace as necessary. 2 Test accessories that are connected to supply reservoir. 3 Test governor for leakage, either internal of external leak. 4 Be sure dryer application is correct if you have QE or E- type Cummins Engin. 5 Test outlet check valve on air dryer.
