THE SHELBY STORY Shelby and Ford, a perfect alliance A PASSION FOR RACING Carroll Shelby (on the right) and driver Dan Gurney at the Hours of Sebring race. Passionate about cars and motor racing, Carroll Shelby played a major part in the development of the Ford Mustang, starting with the launch of the Shelby Mustang GT350 in Without Carroll Shelby, the story of the Ford Mustang would have been very different, because this multi-talented designer played a decisive role in the enduring success of that legendary American car. For all lovers of sports coupes, the name Mustang evokes memories of one of the most fascinating models in American automobile history, and one which brought prestige and glory to its constructor, Ford. The first prototype of the car, known as the Mustang Concept, was presented in Two years later, in April 1964, Ford launched the definitive model. It was extremely well received, so much so that in the following year, its creators decided to go one step further and develop more powerful and sportier versions. Ford s aim was to boost the Mustang s power and handling so that it could outperform its major rivals, such as the Plymouth Barracuda, the Mercury Cougar 3
THE SHELBY STORY and the Dodge Challenger, as well as the Chevrolet Camaro and the Pontiac Firebird. THE GT40 IN COMPETITION At the time, Ford was racing its GT40 sportscar, with which it hoped to win the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours race. But at its first attempt, in 1964, the three GT40s that it entered in the race suffered mechanical problems and had to retire. To try and solve these problems, Ford turned to Carroll Shelby, at that time a famous racing driver who had re-engineered a number of cars and won many races for various makers. Among other things, Shelby had become famous for fitting a lightweight Ford V8 engine into an AC Ace chassis in 1962 to create the renowned Shelby Cobra sportscar. Thanks to Shelby, the GT40 s racing results soon improved dramatically. GT40s distinguished themselves in endurance races such as the 1965 Daytona 2000, but they still lacked reliability and again they failed to do well at Le Mans. But in 1966, everything fell into place for Ford when three GT40s, all prepared by Shelby, took the first three places in the Le Mans 24 Hours. In the years that followed, GT40s scored victory after victory including wins at Le Mans in 1967, 1968 and A MORE POWERFUL MUSTANG Meanwhile, Ford had decided to concentrate its future competition efforts on the car that it had just launched onto the market, the Mustang. The company wanted to improve the sports performance of the Mustang because its looks and heritage were more American than that of the GT40, which had originally been designed and built in England. Ford turned to Carroll Shelby to develop a more powerful version of the Mustang, and the result was the 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350, powered by a 4.7-litre (289cu in) 306bhp V8 engine. This car was such a commercial success that two years later, Ford launched a yet further improved version, the Shelby Mustang GT500, with a 7-litre (427cu in) 355bhp engine. Ford and Carroll Shelby continued their very productive relationship for several more years, during which the company enjoyed a successful period in motorsport, and in which the Mustang proved itself to be a seriously competitive car. A WINNING CAR Carroll Shelby with a Ford GT40, the car that he helped develop into a race winner. Its successes included four consecutive wins at Le Mans. 4
MUSCLE CARS Pontiac Tempest GTO, 1967 It wasn t the first highpowered medium-sized car to hit the US market, but the Pontiac Tempest GTO, launched in 1964, set a new standard for street performance. It is credited with being the original muscle car, a term applied to the more powerful versions of mid-range American cars that were built from the 1960s onwards. The decision by General Motors to ban its divisions from competing in motor racing from 1963 led, unexpectedly, to the development of medium-sized cars with big, powerful engines, which later became known as muscle cars. Some cars that could, in hindsight, qualify as muscle cars had been around for some time, but it was to be GM s take on the concept that became the benchmark for the new genre. After GM s racing ban, one of its brands, Pontiac, which had always boasted of its racing successes in its marketing campaigns, found itself without one of its main selling points. A DISTINCTIVE HOOD SCOOP The air scoop on the hood was a distinctive feature of the GTO, and helped to make the car easily recognisable. As standard, it was purely decorative, but it could be converted into a working scoop. As a result, it decided to put more effort into developing performance cars, at a time when younger buyers wanted more power with less emphasis on luxury. But to do this, Pontiac needed a new car, and the model it came up with was the result of an idea developed by three of the company s engineers: engine specialist Russell Gee, chassis engineer Bill Collins, and their boss, John DeLorean. In the 1980s, DeLorean became famous when he founded his own company to build a sportscar with a stainless steel body and gull-wing doors. This car, the DMC-12, became famous all 5
MUSCLE CARS In spite of some opposition from GM s marketing department, which couldn t see a clear position in the market for the new model, and ignoring GM s own policy, which at the time limited the capacity of the V8 engines of their mid-range models to 330 cubic inches (5.4 litres), Pontiac president Elliot ( Pete ) Estes gave the green light to the project. Gee, Collins and DeLorean then developed the car that would become the GTO. over the world as the time-travelling sportscar used by Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and the eccentric Doc Emmett L. Brown (Christopher Lloyd) in the movie Back to the Future. EIGHT TAIL LIGHTS Eight tail lights, four on each side and mounted flush with the bodywork, distinguished the 1967 model from those of previous years. ORIGIN OF THE NAME There is uncertainty about the exact origin of the GTO part of the car s name. Some say that it was inspired by the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO. That particular GTO stood for Gran Turismo Omologato (Grand Touring Homologated), because Ferrari had produced the car to gain type approval (homologation) to compete in Group 3 Grand Touring Car races. An alternative theory suggests that the Pontiac car s initials came from Grand Tempest Option, a proposed but later rejected name for the new model, which was a variant of the basic Pontiac Tempest. And as for the Grand designation, that came about because, at the time, Pontiac had THE CONVERTIBLE VERSION As well as the coupe versions, with or without a central pillar, the GTO was also available with a four-seater convertible body. 6
MUSCLE CARS carburettor and twin exhaust manifolds. As an option, the standard carburettor could be replaced to order by three twin-barrel carbs that increased the engine s power from 325 to 348bhp. The gearbox was a three-speed manual unit with a floormounted gear lever, but customers could also order the car with a fourspeed manual box or a two-speed automatic transmission. The GTO had a limited-slip differential to increase traction, and the suspension was relatively rigid to improve its roadholding. What the engineers didn t improve, though, was the A TOUCH OF LUXURY The fashionable wooden dashboard added distinction to the interior. The customer could order seat belts as an optional extra. taken to using the word to denote its luxury models. MORE POWER The most important difference between the GTO and the standard Tempest was the engine. Under the hood of the GTO, the engineers mounted the 6.4-litre (389cu in) V8 used by the larger Pontiacs the Bonneville and the Catalina which was fitted with a single four-barrel THE ENGINE The key to the GTO s performance was its powerful 6.4-litre V8 engine. It could be fitted with a single four-barrel carburettor or, as seen above, with three twin-barrel carburettors. steering, which was very slow, considering the model s sportscar aspirations. That and the drum brakes were definitely the weak points of this early muscle car. The GTO was offered with a choice of three two-door bodies from the Tempest range: the conventional coupe; the hardtop coupe without a central pillar and with frameless doors; and the convertible. 7
MUSCLE CARS EARLY CHANGES The first generation of the Tempest GTO was sold from 1964 to In 1965, the cylinder heads were upgraded and the bodywork was tweaked, and, after 1966 which turned out to be its best sales year, with nearly 100,000 units sold the car became an independent model within the Pontiac range. The front end was redesigned for 1967, and featured the first plastic grilles in automotive history. The rear, too, was changed. Gone were the unusual louvred tail lights of 1966, replaced by two clusters of four lights, mounted flush with the body. More importantly, the capacity of the V8 engine was increased to 6.6 litres (400cu in) and three different power options (265, 335 and 360bhp) were available, depending on the carburettors used. In addition, all the GTOs (which were still offered with the same three body styles as before) were fitted with new safety equipment, such as a padded dashboard and steering wheel, and a steering column that would collapse in the event of an accident, absorbing some of the impact energy. As for the transmission, the optional two-speed automatic gearbox gave way to a more modern unit with three speeds. In 1968, when General Motors launched a new generation of TECH SPECS Pontiac Tempest GTO Hardtop Coupe, 1967 BEST SELLER The GTO was initially offered as a variant of the standard Tempest, but, as a result of its commercial success, it soon acquired the status of a separate model. medium-sized models, the Tempest GTO was given a new chassis and bodywork, while retaining its 6.6-litre V8 engine. 9 THE AMERICAN DREAM POWER AND AGGRESSION The two key features of a muscle car were a powerful engine and aggressive styling. This is the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS (Super Sport). Speed and power In the 1960s, a new category of performance cars made its appearance in the United States. Known as muscle cars, these were medium- or full-sized models, modestly priced but fitted with powerful V8 engines. The 1960s was a golden age for the American motor industry. The 1970s oil crisis had yet to happen, so gasoline prices were low and high fuel consumption wasn t a problem for drivers. The choice of cars offered by the leading US makers began to include a range of two- or four-seater sports models that were called supercars at first, but soon became known as muscle cars. They owed this new name partly to their power and partly to their aggressive appearance. To qualify as a muscle car, a car had to look the part. To achieve the soughtafter aggressive appearance, the designer started with a low, wide, twodoor bodyshell, either one from an existing car or a completely new design. This was then tricked out with sporty add-ons, such as oversized wheel rims and tyres and extra-large bumpers. Similar attention was paid to the interior, which typically boasted features such as sports seats and pedals, and brightly coloured trim. 9
THE AMERICAN DREAM result, they were not elitist cars, and low fuel prices meant that their owners could enjoy them to the full without worrying unduly about the running costs. The demand for the powerful and reasonably priced muscle cars grew steadily, and the major manufacturers were soon offering quite a range of them, including small two-seaters as well as medium- and full-sized models. But the most important feature of the muscle car was hidden under the hood. The people who bought these cars demanded performance that lived up to the promise of the sporty bodywork. Having rear-wheel drive, these cars offered less than perfect roadholding and cornering, but they were powered by V8 engines with a capacity of up to 7 litres (427cu in), which developed 400 to 500bhp and delivered spectacular acceleration and high straight-line speeds. BIG BUICK In 1970, Buick launched its GSX muscle car, a high-performance version of its Gran Sport 455 coupe. It was an impressive 5.13 metres long. A CLASSIC MODEL The1961 Chevrolet Impala SS (Super Sport) was a full-sized muscle car with a now-classic design. It was fitted with a 325bhp V8 engine and a 4-speed manual gearbox. REASONABLY PRICED Another important aspect of these cars was their price. They generally cost less than $3,000 about $22,500 in today s prices which meant that many people could afford them. As a ROAD AND TRACK Muscle cars soon became extremely fashionable, not only on the roads of America but also on the racetracks. With their fearsome acceleration, the cars distinguished themselves in drag racing, which at that time was a popular weekend attraction all over the United States. Drag races are competitions run over short, straightline distances, usually a quarter of a mile (about 400m). The cars typically set off two at a time from a standing start and race to be first across the finishing line. Acceleration is the key to success, and the overall winner of the event is decided after a series of elimination rounds. 10
THE AMERICAN DREAM Muscle cars also took part in other forms of motorsport in North America, such as the Trans-Am series for sports sedans, and the NASCAR series for stock cars (production cars). Winning these races brought great prestige to the makers of the cars, and usually boosted sales enormously. Performance car fans flocked to the circuits to see the competition between models that were exactly the same as those they hoped to drive one day on American roads, a dream that could very well become a reality. As a result, the major car makers made great efforts to succeed in racing, doing all they could to develop cars that were faster than SPACIOUS AND ELEGANT In the 1950s, before the appearance of muscle cars, manufacturers concentrated on styling, spaciousness and luxury, rather than performance, as demonstrated by this magnificent Chevrolet Bel Air convertible of those of their competitors. For instance, the 1970 Plymouth Superbird was powered by a 7-litre (426cu in) V8 engine developing 435bhp, which gave the car a maximum speed of 235km/h and a 0 to 100km/h time of 5.4 seconds. 11
