General 4AQUARIUS Plus 2 The Aquarius Plus 2 series of chillers and heat pumps with reversible facility on the hydraulic side are high efficiency water cooled packaged units (Eurovent A Class). The Aquarius Plus 2 series uses a dry expansion type single pass shell & tube evaporator with a refrigerant circuit for each compressor and a single water circuit, one or two semi-hermetic dual screw compressors and continuous control of cooling capacity serving independent refrigerant circuits, electronic expansion valves and R134a refrigerant. The condensers (one for each refrigerant circuit) are shell & tube type and are suitable to integrate partial or total heat recovery. Installation is usually indoors, although the units are also suitable for outdoor installation under a rain shelter (IP54). The units are managed by a microprocessor controller, through a simple user interface allows a fully independent control of all the main functions, including adjustments and alarms. All units are designed, built and checked in compliance with ISO 9001 and incorporate components sourced from premium manufacturers. The combinations of these solutions make it possible to enhance energy efficiency at partial loads, which account for the largest proportion of the working life of an air conditioning unit, thereby maximizing ESEER (*) seasonal performance values. (*) The ESEER (European Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) index proposed and used in the European design context, characterize the average weighted efficiency of a chiller for air conditioning applications. Both indices express, far more accurately than EER, the ratio between the useful effect (energy removed from interior spaces) and energy expenditure (electrical energy consumed) of a chiller during an entire season of operation. In relation to the various different operating conditions and the frequency with which they occur, these indicators are calculated by assigning a different energy weight to the corresponding output values of the unit. For example ESEER = 6 means that during an entire season of operation 1 kwh of electrical power is required on average to remove 6 kwh of heat energy from the air conditioned spaces. 41% ESEER 33% 23% 3,0% 25% 50% 75% 100% ESEER energy weights

Acoustic configurations and versions The Aquarius Plus 2 range, in order to meet different installation requirements, are available with different versions and accessories: CH cooling only version; suitable for working with evaporator outlet water temperature from 0 C up to 20 C and condenser outlet water temperature up to 60 C. ME condenserless version: this units are supplied without condensers and refrigerant charge adding on each refrigerant circuit a liquid reciever and the shut-off valves on discharge and on liquid line. The compressor s capacity control can work down to 50%. Total heat recovery R and partial heat recovery D options are not available with LWT version. HP heat pump version with reversible facility on the hydraulic side and outlet water temperature up to 60 C in heating mode; in comparison with "CH" version, the condenser and discharge pipes are thermally insulated to prevent heat loss; the units are supplied with additional probes for temperature control in heating mode; the reverse cycle valves and installation of the probes are to be provided by the customer; the reversing cycle valves can be managed by electronic control through a digital input. Total heat recovery R option is not available with HP version. LWT low water temperature version; with this option units are able to provide water from +5 C down to -8 C and condenser outlet water temperature up to 55 C; in comparison with "CH" version this units are fitted with an evaporator optimized for working with brine; the evaporator is supplied with an additional thermal insulation in order to avoid potential condensation problems; each compressor is equipped with liquid injection and capacity control can work down to 50%. Antifreeze additives must be used in adequate concentration. Heat recovery: R partial heat recovery: this configuration allows the production of hot water while the unit is on cooling mode by a partial recovery of the condensation heat; the heat recovery exchanger is fully integrated in the condenser (see. chapter Partial and total heat recovery ). D total heat recovery: this configuration allows the production of hot water while the unit is on cooling mode by a total recovery of the condensation heat; the heat recovery exchanger is fully integrated in the condenser (see. chapter Partial and total heat recovery ). Acoustic configurations: Basic acoustic configuration: compressors directly accessible from the outside. Silent acoustic configuration: optimised for very low noise operation, it allows a reduced noise levels by approximately 6 db(a) compared to Basic version; the compressors are housed in a metal compartment insulated with a sound absorbing layer of open-cell expanded polyurethane and a sound deadening rubber sheet; this option is available for all the models and configurations. 3. Testing Basic acoustic configuration Silent acoustic configuration AQUARIUS Plus 2 All units are tested in a test chamber in order to check correct operation. The main checks performed are as follows: the correct instalment of all components and the lack of refrigerant leaks; electrical safety tests as prescribed by EN ; correct operation of the microprocessor and correct values of all the operating parameters; the temperature probes and pressure transducers. At the time of installation the units require exclusively electrical and hydraulic connection, thus maximising reliability levels. Installation of a filter on the unit inlet is mandatory. 5

6 5. Compressors The units of the Aquarius Plus 2 range are equipped with semihermetic dual screw compressors optimized for use with R134a refrigerant. The compressors operates on independent refrigerant circuits; this allows to deliver the exact cooling capacity required by the system achieving and high energy efficiency special at partial loads, which account for the largest portion of the working life of the air conditioning application. The compressors can deliver down to 25% of the nominal cooling capacity in the single circuit units and down to 12.5% in the units with two compressors. The new "Smart Stepless software algorithm developed by MTA determines with greater precision the real position of the compressor capacity slide and therefore its cooling capacity, compared to the traditional capacity logics; current and average partialization percentage are also available on the display. In addition, even in situations of high variability in the thermal load, the electronic control independently adjusts the capacity speed according to the needs of the system in a manner that is transparent to the user, with consequent greater stability of the evaporator outlet water temperature. Lubrication of the mechanical parts is ensured by a high-efficiency separator that is built into the compressor that reduces the outflow of the oil towards the system and the presence of an appropriate sightglass that enables control of the oil level in the casing. Each compressor is equipped with two oil level sensors: the upper sensor has the function of pre-alarm and is activated for necessary and relevant operational logics for a better return of the oil to the compressor, while the lower sensor has a function of alarm and shutdown the unit in the event of intervention. The electric motor with star-delta starting (soft-starter optional) is two-pole type cooled by the intake gas; protection from possible overheating is ensured by an internal module that controls the temperature of the windings; the same module also controls the sequence of the phases to avoid the danger of reverse rotation and the compressor s discharge temperature. Each compressor is equipped with a crankcase heater, a delivery shut-off valve and a check valve in delivery side in order to prevent liquid return. The compressors are easily accessible for normal routine maintenance and are mounted in the upper part of the machine on rubber vibration dampers. The unloading function allows starting of the system and the operation of the machine, even under conditions that are very different from the nominal ones. Evaporator Thermal load Smart Stepless Stepless Inverter Step The evaporator is of the dry expansion single pass shell and tube type with one or two independent refrigerant circuits and a single water circuit. The evaporators in the Aquarius Plus 2 series are specifically designed for use with R134a and are composed of a bundle of copper tubes mechanically expanded at the ends into a tube plate and housed inside a carbon steel shell. The refrigerant flows inside the copper tubes, which are ribbed to increase the exchange efficiency, whilst the water, which is oriented by baffles, flows over the outside of the tubes. Each evaporator is externally protected with thermal insulation material and anti-condensation cladding with black embossed finish, and protected from the risk of freezing potentially caused by low evaporation temperatures by antifreeze function incorporated in the t (s) electronic controller, which monitors the water outlet temperature. The LWT units are fitted with an evaporator optimized for working with brine; an additional thermal insulation is provided in order to avoid potential condensation problems. Each evaporator is equipped with a water differential pressure switch to protect it in conditions in which the water flow is absent or insufficient. The water connections are easily accessible from the exterior of the unit and are Victaulic type, supplied with stub pipe. All the evaporators comply with the EC pressure vessels directive and can handle antifreeze solutions and, in general, all other liquids that are compatible with the hydraulic circuit construction materials.

7 7. Condensers The condensers, one for each refrigerant circuit, are of the shell and tube type and are optimised for the use of R134a refrigerant. The exchangers are composed of a bundle of copper tubes (inside which water flows), housed inside a carbon steel shell, in which condensation occurs. The cast iron headers of the shell carry the threaded connections for the hydraulic pipes and are removable in order to allow inspection and the internal cleaning of the tubes; the tubes are finned on the water side to enhance thermal exchange efficiency.installers are required to fit a filter on the unit inlet line to intercept any debris. If the installation involves the use of water at the inlet to the condensers outside the values specified for the operating limits, pressure control valves must be fitted. All the condenser comply with the EC pressure vessels directive and can handle antifreeze solutions and, in general, all other liquids that are compatible with the hydraulic circuit construction materials. The user is responsible for interconnection on the water side of dual circuit units and, when the unit is to be used as a heat pump, positioning of the winter temperature control probe (always supplied pre-wired to the controller) in a socket on the condenser outlet pipe. 8. Partial and total heat recovery (optional) D - partial heat recovery: by means of a specifically developed condenser, while the unit is on cooling mode, it is possible to recover part of the condensing energy for the production of hot water. Heat recovery takes place simply via activation of the flow of water in the relevant area of the exchanger. The interconnection, temperature probes and management of the pumps are at the customer charge. The use of partial recovery is not permitted in HP mode. R - total heat recovery: by means of a specifically developed condenser, while the unit is on cooling mode, it is possible to fully recover the condensing energy for the production of hot water. This configuration offers significant energy saving whenever the requested of hot water is high. Total recovery mode is activated by turning on the hydraulic pumps in the relevant area of the exchanger. With this solution the condenser and the delivery pipes are supplied thermally insulated, while the interconnection and the temperature probes are at customer charge. Management of the pumps and of the alarms is entrusted to the xdrive electronic control. This option is not compatible with the heat pump configuration (HP). 9. Refrigerant circuit Each cooling circuit in the standard configuration is completed in the following manner: electronic expansion valve that allows the improvement of cooling performance in a context that is much wider than mechanical thermostatic valve, a reduction of the fluctuations of the temperature of the water and a great precision during operation at partial loads; filter-dryer; sight-glass; shut-off valve and check valve on the compressor delivery; shut-off valve on the liquid line; pressure switches for control of the maximum condensation pressure as provided by the European standards (EN378); safety valves on the low and high pressure line (as envisaged by EN378); low pressure transducer: for alarm management, read and display the evaporating pressure; 10. Structure and casing The Aquarius Plus 2 units are characterised by a self-supporting structure developed in order to allow the maximum accessibility to all the components for ordinary maintenance. The heat exchangers are painted and rigidly assembled and form an integral part of the structure and support the compressors and the electrical panel. The base, heat exchangers and the support structure of the compressors are black RAL 9005, while the electrical panel and the panelling of the silenced acoustic version (optional) are light grey RAL 7035 with high pressure transducer: read and display the condensing pressure; alarms management; unloading function; for adjustment of the condensing pressure through servo-driven modulating valve (optional); antifreeze oil and refrigerant charge. The refrigeration circuit of the LWT version includes a liquid injection system on the compressor; this consists of bleeding from the main liquid line of a small amount of refrigerant that is directly expanded within the compressor thus allowing control and limitation of the discharge temperature of the compressors. The entire brazing for connection of the various components is made with silver alloy and the cold pipes are coated with heat-insulation material to prevent the formation of condensation. orange-peel finish made from galvanised carbon steel plating. All of the components are subjected to a treatment of phosphor degreasing treatment and oven painting at 180 C with polyester powder coating to provide a durable weatherproof finish. The units are equipped with eyebolts for lifting and movement via the 4-point sling bar. AQUARIUS Plus 2 7

Electrical panel The unit and the electrical cabinet are made in compliance with CEI EN (Safety of machinery Electrical equipment of machines Safety Part 1: General rules); in particular, protection against the weather is ensured such as to allow outdoor installation of the chillers protected by a rain shelter. The IP54 protection is assured thanks to a seal and a fully welded cabinet, where the electrical devices are placed on a base plate; an easy access to all the device is ensured by a double door where there is the display of the electronic control which is protected by a transparent polycarbonate door. The electrical cabinet, with forced ventilation, is equipped with a main breaker with door lock device and contains the circuit breakers to protect the compressors and contactors for star-delta starting; the control section includes a transformer for the control circuits and the microprocessor board. The protection from the phase loss and from the phase reversal is assured by the phase monitor device. The units are also electrically prearranged for connection of a flow switch and the pump s management is available for all the configurations. Available Volt-free contacts: general alarm; remote ON/OFF; remote CH/HP; flow-switch; double set-point; evaporator pump; condensers and heat recovery (optional) pumps. 12. Control 8AQUARIUS Plus 2 Control and management of the unit are provided by a MTA's control system "xdrive" composed by microprocessor electronic controller connected to the semi graphic backlit user terminal; the latter has a 240x96 pixel screen, 8 unit programming buttons and buzzer. Thanks to the icons, multi-function keys with dynamic description and moving images, the displays and information are easy to interpret, by both trained personnel and the system operator even if not specifically trained on the use of the controller. The terminal is located on the door of the electrical cabinet and is protected by an openable polycarbonate cover. An USB port placed near the display allows the software update and the download of the alarms history. The controller manages the following main functions independently: Smart Stepless : Intelligent management of the speed of the compressor capacity control with self-adaptive logic depending on thermal load; step capacity control (CH-HP versions: 4 steps for each compressor 25% 50% 75% 100%; LWT and ME versions: 3 steps for each compressor 50% 75% 100%); control of the 25% partialization step depending on the oil level, on the compressor s operating range and on the compressor discharge temperature; temperature control of water at the evaporator outlet, with neutral zone logic; set-point management: - fixed (standard); - dual set by a digital signal; - variable in accordance with time bands (4 time bands) programmable on the internal timer; - variable by analogue signal 4 20 ma; unloading function that allows system starting and unit operation also with parameters that differ significantly from nominal conditions (by deactivating one or more steps); modulating valves management; display of the main working parameters of the electronic expansion valves; automatic rotation of compressors start sequence to minimise the working time of each compressor; on/off by daily and/or weekly time bands; antifreeze control in accordance with the evaporator outlet temperature; count of operating hours of the unit and individual compressors with notification when the programmed operating hours before maintenance are exceeded; management of alarm messages, including: - low evaporating pressure; - high condensing pressure; - compressor thermal protection trip alarm; - pump failure alarm; - compressor oil level; - evaporator low flow rate alarm; - high and low temperature water inlet and outlet alarms; - antifreeze alarm; - phase sequence alarm; - low difference between condensing and evaporating pressure. In addition to alarms, the display can also present the following main information: compressors partialization values; current and average partialization values; condensing and evaporation pressure values of each circuit; inlet and outlet water temperature; status of digital inputs and outputs of the electronic controller; alarms history; language selection (Italian, English, French, German, Spanish, Russian); the main operating parameters of the machine can be change through a password-protected menu. In addition, the unit features a 24 Vac powered remote general alarm. The controller has a RS485 serial output with ModBUS communication protocol for the connection to applications developed by third party

9 System Integrators, for local and remote control and an Ethernet port for connecting to a LAN network through which you can access to the internal site controller to display/modify the operating parameters of the machine. Several units (up to 10) can be connected in parallel via Ethernet connection with its dedicated kit (one unit as a "master" and the other as "slave"). The user can manage the group of units by means of the master unit terminal or by means of the replicated remote terminal (optional). N.B.: Expansions may be present to increase the number of inputs/ outputs available, depending on the plant configuration. 13. Options, kits and special executions 13.1 Options The options must be specified at the time of the order because they are factory fitted: Compressors soft starter: these devices reduces inrush current during startup of the compressors; the soft starter allows to preserve the compressors by mechanical stress, with a reduction of maintenance and downtime; units equipped with soft starter can operate up to a maximum ambient temperature of 40 C, after which, the unit will enter in a safety mode, in order to preserving the operation of the machine; soft starter aren t suitable combined with capacitive elements and power factor correction systems must not be operated simultaneously with them. For models 3301 and 6602, this option is available on request only (special execution); capacitors for compressor power factor correction at cosϕ > 0.9 located in an electrical box installed on the rear side of the electrical panel; this option is not compatible with the soft starter devices. Heat recovery: D - partial heat recovery (see relevant chapter); R - total heat recovery (see relevant chapter); Acoustic configurations : Silent acoustic configuration: optimised for very low noise operation, it allows a reduced noise levels by approximately 6 db(a) compared to Basic version. 10 10AQUARIUS Plus Kits The kits are supplied separately, generally at the same time of the unit, and installed by the user. They can be supplied later as spare parts, modification kits, completion kits, etc.: anti-vibration mounts; Victaulic to flanges evaporator conversion kit; threaded to flanges condenser/total heat recovery conversion kit; threaded to Victaulic condenser/total heat recovery conversion kit; condensing pressure control with: - 2-way pressostatic valve; - 2-way and 3-way modulating servo-controlled valves driven by a 0-10V signal supplied by the unit controller. The choice of valve is made on the basis of the water flow rate in each condenser and the maximum closing and adjustment pressure differentials, exclusively for modulating valves, using the "Pressure control valves" and "Modulating valves" tables. Each kit has a single valve for each condenser and includes threaded counter-flanges complete with seals. The user is responsible for installing the valves: installation of support brackets, connections and hydraulic unions (the diameter of the threaded connections may not correspond to the diameter of the condenser connections), refrigerant (pressure control valves) and electrical (modulating valves) connections. simple remote control: composed of an ON/OFF switch, green run LED and red general alarm LED, mounted on a plastic wallmounting enclosure, plus 3 metres of cable for connection to the unit; remote display: can be installed at a distance of up to 200 metres, it works as on board display and it shows the same information. It is equipped with special support for external fixation; kit modularity: allows the connection of multiple units in parallel by means Ethernet connection to create a modular system; supervision system xweb300d, with the possibility of recording the operating parameters, graphics, alarms notification and remote control; Gateway Trend: allows the connection of the unit and its supervision by a Trend network controls; 13.3 Special executions This is a selection of the most popular special features, normally not described in detail in our catalogues; the feasibility of special designs must be assessed, confirmed, and priced on a case by case basis in communication with our sales offices before placing the order: very high energy efficiency versions; 460 V / 3 ph / 60 Hz power supply; condensers suitable for sea water.

11 Selection guide For a correct chiller selection it is necessary to: 1) Observe the operational limits as indicated in the chart Working limits ; 2) Verify that the cool water flow is between the minim and maximum values of water flow, which are described in the Hydraulic data table. A very low flow can cause laminar flow and thus danger of ice formation and poor unit control; a very high flow can cause great pressure drops and the possibility of tube failure inside the evaporator; 3) For working temperatures under 6 C outlet water it is necessary to add ethylene glycol or any other antifreeze additives. Consult the chart Solutions of water and glycol to determine the necessary quantity of ethylene glycol, the reduction of cooling capacity, the increase of power absorbed by the compressors, the increase of evaporator pressure drop due to the presence of the ethylene glycol; 4) When the difference in temperature between water inlet and outlet is different from 5 C, the cooling/heating capacity and the absorbed power must be corrected using the table Corrective coefficients ΔT 5 C.
