The minutes of the previous meeting and the treasurer s report were accepted unanimously. The upcoming fun-fly was confirmed as May 19 th for scale models. Our participation in the Day in the Sky at the airport was well received, and we have been thanked profusely! Hence, no surprise that we are invited to have a booth and flying area for the upcoming Watsonville airport open house on Saturday, June 15 th. We look forward to a good turn-out from our club members. (A copy of the flyer was sent out to all members on June 2 nd ). We have now reached our initial investment on club shirts. New Business The Monterey Bay Academy air strip was the subject of the board meeting held prior to the general monthly meeting. We will keep the Tuesdays and Thursdays electric only as before, but members flying must have a spotter with them because of the possibility of full-sized airplanes landing on the runway. Morgan, the company from whom we have been getting our club fuel for many years, will no longer market the Mach 7 fuel which we generally use. As a consequence, Steve Boracca has looked at other

sources and proposed using Power Master. We can mix and match orders between 2-stroke and 4- stroke, and the advertised shelf life is eight years!

This, you will remember, was originally built by Don Wilden, and here is a picture of it taken forty years ago at the old club field near the junction of Salinas Road and Highway One.

Mike had got the airplane second hand and the accident was completely unforeseen. It does show, however, the importance of checking one s airplanes structurally before flying, a chore that most of us don t do. Show and Tell Richard Tacklind showed the completed Super Buccaneer which was in skeleton form last month. It now has a 600 watt Turnigy motor, and the paint job is accented with automobile trim tape. This was held in good weather on Sunday, May 19 th. Your editor was the contest director, and the fun-fly was divided into four categories, pre-1920 airplanes, civil aircraft from 1920 onwards, WW II warbirds, and electric ducted fan-powered aircraft. Fifteen models were entered, and the contest was modeled after world scale championships to the extent feasible. About 45% of possible points were awarded for static appearance and 55% for flight. Here s the entire gang lined up prior to getting serious! As most of the models were ARF s, it was felt that at least half of the static points should go to the original Asian manufacturers! The top static model was Don Good s very pretty Gilmore Lion, shown here on take-off.

Four airplanes competed in the EDF category, with Stefan Warnke s Sea Vixen taking first place with Marcelo s L-39 just a few points behind. Here s the Sea Vixen. Several of the competing airplanes had been flown many times before with associated scars of battle, and so it was no surprise that the three airplanes which tied for second place statically were fairly new. Previous experience, which has been reported in the model airplane magazines, is that while most of the Asian ARF s are well made and look very good, the mechanical components are often not up to the mark. So for Stefan, it s almost automatic to upgrade these components before even attempting to fly. This showed up very well in the blistering performance which led to his first place. Here s Marcelo s L-39 hope this makes up for not having a picture of his P-51! Gary s Spitfire is seen here, but sorry to say, no picture available of Marcelo s equally nice looking P-51, about the same size. These two airplanes were both flown very well by You e probably all wondering what happened to the pre-1920 event. Regrettably we only had one entrant, Dan Morris. Some of our other scale model regulars were otherwise engaged, which led to this being the only entry. Dan s WW I SE-5 was, like most of his planes, scratch built from foam, and while not the prettiest airplane of the overall entries, was well flown by Jacob, and of course placed first in its class. Here it is. The square section struts, rectangular section foam rudder and tailplane, and the not very WW I color scheme did make the judge cringe a little, but Dan has to be commended for

Alan Brown s WW I Quadraplane finally had its maiden flight, although not trusting himself, had Jacob do the honors. It flies just about as marginally

He s also taking heed of advice from Stefan Warnke and Gary Gonzales and will replace the ESC in his De Havilland Vampire as a first step before perhaps also replacing the fan and motor. Patrick Hung has been taking lessons from Dennis Kanemura, and when last seen was just about ready to be let loose on the rest of the gang. Here s his E- Flite Alpha Sport 450, a very good trainer. ( the foam sheet the wing was built from had those words exposed from the manufacturer on it and Gary decided it was a great name). The plane on the lower right was also cut on Jacob s CNC machine and flies superbly. The biplane in the back is Jacob s cutout of the same plane with two wings attached. John Wheeler has built both the monoplane and biplane versions and both fly extremely well. What s going on with full-sized aircraft? I thought you might be interested in some of the full-size work being reported in the AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics) current magazine. It s much closer to our interests than you might expect. This is the Agusta Westland Project Zero tilt rotor electric powered helicopter, with an all-electric drive system. (No complex and heavy mechanical transmission system). Dan Morris and Jacob have been getting together using the CNC routing machine which Jacob made (see the March and April newsletters), and produced these models. Next is the E-Volo VC1 made by a small German company partly funded to the tune of $2 million. Looks like something we could make ourselves! Sorry, I ve filled all the space.
