1 Deep Dive: Hottest Holiday Toys 2017 In this report, we focus on the toy industry in the US and the UK, and look at some of the trends that we expect to influence holiday toy gifting. 1) In the first half of 2017, the US toy market generated sales of $7.2 billion, up 3% year over year. 2) The US toy market generated revenues of nearly $21 billion in 2016, reflecting year-over-year growth of 4.5%. 3) The UK toy market generated revenues of 3.5 billion ($4.7 billion) in 2016, reflecting year-over-year growth of 9.4%. 4) This holiday season, a number of toys use technology to teach the user to code or to simply enable play. 5) Entertainment licenses continue to dominate a significant portion of retailers toy lists this year as well. 6) Collectibles with surprise features also appear prominently on several retailers lists. Executive Summary In this report, we examine the toy industry in the US and the UK, look at how the toy retail sector has fared in these countries over the last year and explore some of the themes prevalent among this year s holiday toy gifting. 1H17 The US toy market saw sales rise 3% year over year in the first half of 2017, according to The NPD Group. This growth was driven by games and puzzles, plush toys, dolls, vehicles and infant and preschool toys. Sales of arts and crafts, youth electronics, building sets and action figures and accessories declined during the same period. In the first half of the year, outdoor and sports toys formed the largest segment by sales, followed by infant and preschool toys, dolls and games and puzzles. In the UK, toy sales declined by 1% year over year in the first half of 2017, according to NPD The US toy market was worth $20.4 billion in The toy market in the UK, although considerably smaller than that of the US, is the fourth largest in the world. Some 415 million units of toys were sold in the UK in 2016, denoting an increase of 7.5%, driven by the collectables (up 44% year over year) and games and puzzles (up 21% year over year) categories. 4 Introduction The holidays are never complete without gifts, and toys are perhaps the most important gift of all. Retailers publish top holiday toys lists as early as September, and run promotions and offers in the run up to Christmas. In this report, we examine the toy industry in the US and the UK, look at how the toy retail sector has fared in these countries over the last year and explore some of the themes prevalent among this year s holiday toy gifting. A Snapshot of the Toy Retailing Sector in the US and the UK The US and the UK are the two largest toy retailing markets in the world. We examine these markets below. The US Toy Market The US toy market generated revenues of $7.2 billion in the first half of 2017 alone, up by 3% year over year, according to market intelligence firm The NPD Group and the Toy Industry Association. The US toy market generated revenues of $7.2 billion in the first half of 2017, up by 3% year over year. Here are a few key points about the scale and performance of the market until 2016: In 2016, toy sales in the US amounted to $20.4 billion, reflecting year-over-year growth of 4.5%, based on data from NPD s retail tracking service, which includes sales data from retailers who represent approximately 80% of the US retailing market for toys. NPD estimates the total US toy market was worth $26.5 billion in 2016 and $25 billion in 2015, denoting year-over-year growth of 6%. In 2016, nearly two-thirds of US toy sales were made in the second half. Among the toy subcategories, The NPD Group observed the following in the first half of 2017 and in 2016: Sales in the first half of the year were driven by games and puzzles, plush toys, dolls, vehicles and infant and preschool toys. Source: The NPD Group/FGRT For this year s holiday season, US retail trade association the National Retail Federation (NRF) forecasts total retail sales will increase 3.6% 4.0% to a total of $ $ billion, up from $ billion last year. Read our summary of the NRF holiday forecast here. The UK Toy Market The toy market in the UK is considerably smaller than it is in the US. In 2016, the UK toy market generated revenues of 3.5 billion ($4.7 billion), according to The NPD Group and the British Toy and Hobby Association (BTHA), reflecting year-over-year growth of 9.4%. Some 415 million units of toys were sold in 2016, denoting an increase of 7.5%, driven by the collectables (up 44% year over year) and games and puzzles (up 21% year over year) categories. This makes the UK the largest toy market in Europe and the fourth largest in the world, according to The NPD Groupand the BTHA. The BTHA conducted a survey amongst its members and found that they have three main concerns: Some 66% are concerned about the devaluation of the British pound against the US dollar, which could prompt price increases. Fully 61% are concerned about the lack of decision or clarity on Brexit. Some 20% are anxious over the uncertainty regarding exporting to, and trade deals with, Europe as the industry s largest export market. 6

7 Over 80% of members of the BTHA expect growth in the UK toy market in 2017, despite anxieties regarding the economic environment in Europe. Despite these concerns, toy makers and retailers are positive about the performance of the market in 2017, with over 80% calling for growth. But in the first half of 2017, toy sales in the UK declined by 1%, according to NPD. Toy sales tend to grow faster towards the end of calendar year, and it remains to be seen if this decline will be offset by growth during the holiday season. The key categories forecast to drive growth this year are collectables and board games, licensed toys, S.T.E.M (which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) products and robotics, according to the BTHA. We observe a noticeable presence of these categories among UK toy retailers top holiday toy lists this year. In the UK, FGRT estimates holiday retail sales will climb by around 5% year over year, adding nearly 4 billion ($5.3 billion) to holiday sales and taking the seasonal total to 78.7 billion ($104.3 billion). Themes We Expect to Influence Toy Gifting Each year, several themes influence holiday gifting and retailers toy lists. Here are some of the broad themes that we expect to influence gifting this year. 1) Technology, with an emphasis on education and coding 2) Entertainment licenses 3) Interactive collectibles with a surprise We discuss these themes below. Technology with an Emphasis on Education and Coding Making learning fun has long been integral to game and toy design, and many toy makers ensure that their collections include toys that have an educational element. The Think & Learn Teach n Tag Movi from Fisher Price, which features on Tesco s and Target s top toys lists, is a robot that encourages preschoolers to get their minds and bodies moving while teaching them how to follow directions and think critically about the world around them. Through six games contained in the robot, it gently instructs children to move or encourages them to move and follow directions with its mobility. Hasbro s Dance Code Belle doll can be coded to dance using an app. As technology grows increasingly important in everyday life, many schools encourage learning to write code from a very early age. Last year, while it was mostly startups experimenting with this category, this year, mainstream toy manufacturers, such as Lego and Hasbro, have created toys that teach children to code. The Lego Boost toy set, on Argos s and John Lewis s lists, comes with various parts that children can use to build models, which can then be coded using a free app. Hasbro s Dance Code Belle doll, on Amazon s list, can be coded to dance using an app, and the company s FurReal Proto Max toy set, on John Lewis s and Amazon s lists, comes with parts for children to assemble an animatronic dog. Through a separate free app, children can use code to provide the dog with expressions and personality. 7

8 Other toys that feature prominently on retailers lists with this theme are the Meccano MAX Robot with Artificial Intelligence, which is a buildable, customizable robot on Target s list, and Fisher Price s Dance and Move Beatbo on Hamley s list, which includes two wearable wristbands that have motion trackers that monitor the wearer s movements and when linked to a smartphone app, play music or sound effects according to the body s motions. Entertainment and character licensing accounted for $118.3 billion, or 45% of the total global licensing market in Entertainment Licenses Watching a favorite character from a movie or TV series come to life can delight children and adults alike, and this has given rise to a thriving segment in the licensing business. Entertainment and character licensing remains the largest industry category, accounting for $118.3 billion, or 45% of the total global licensing market, in 2016 according to the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers Association (LIMA). Star Wars was popular last year and toys from its franchise feature on Amazon s, Walmart s and Target s lists. With the latest Star Wars movie slated for release in December this year, we anticipate its toys will become increasingly popular closer to the time. Figure 3. Batman toys, which feature on lists from Amazon, Walmart and Toys R Us. A Spiderman toy (from the Marvel universe), which features on Target s list. Disney toys, which feature on lists from Amazon, Argos, Walmart and Target. Transformers toys on Amazon s and Argos s lists. 8

9 Interactive Collectibles with a Surprise Toys that talk to the user or make noises and respond to stimuli have long been popular, and many toy makers have provided several variations to the surprise element in these toys. Hatchimals: The Hatchimals toy, which featured prominently on several retailers lists last year and was even sold out much ahead of the holidays, has made a comeback this year, but in a new form. While last year s toy egg hatched to reveal a furry, interactive pet, this year s toy will hatch to reveal twins. This toy features on Walmart s, Target s and Argos s lists. LOL Big Surprise Ball: The LOL Big Surprise Ball contains 50 surprises that users can collect to dress and play with their LOL dolls. This doll features on lists from Tesco, Walmart, Target and Toys R Us. The Hatchimals toy, which featured prominently on several retailers lists last year and was even sold out much ahead of the holidays, has made a comeback this year. Amazon has curated its toy lists under themes to help shoppers filter and shop toys by theme. What We Have Seen from Retailers This Year Here, we outline some of the initiatives undertaken by retailers this year. US Retailers Walmart: This year, Walmart has again retained its layaway program, which allows shoppers to reserve products across various categories, including toys. By making a minimum payment of $10, or 10% of the product price, shoppers can get a head start with purchasing items on their list before the stores run out of stock. Walmart s minimum purchase under this program is $10 per item and $50 for the total purchase. Once the full payment has been made, customers can collect the product from a designated store. Cancellations incur a fee of $10, with select stores exempt from this fee. Amazon: Amazon has curated its toy lists according to themes such as STEM Stars, Action-Packed Toys, Too Cute Too Cuddly, Tech Toys, Family Night, Arts & Crafts, Get Active and Preschool to help shoppers filter and shop toys by theme. For Prime customers, Amazon is offering voiceshopping through its Echo devices this year, too. UK Retailers Argos: Argos has stated that it will remain open up to Christmas Eve and will be offering its Fast Track same-day delivery until 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve, allowing shoppers to complete their last-minute purchases. 9
