2 Innovations to Put You in High Gear Tire Market Applications Cold Polymerized Emulsion Styrene Butadiene Rubber (ESBR) and High-Cis Polybutadiene Rubber: Versatile and High Quality Standard Polymers Used in Various Types of Tires Our cold polymerized ESBR of BUNA SB grades use TDAE oil exclusively in order to comply with REACH regulations. These grades provide a good balance of performance and processability in tire application with a superior standard of quality. Styron s Nickel-Butadiene Rubber (Ni-BR) has over 95% cis content and is characterized by an adjusted molecular weight that leads to excellent processing behavior. Our BUNA cis 132 Rubber also offers low hysteresis and good tear resistance, which makes it optimal for tire application. Solution Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SSBR): Meeting Your Needs and Regulatory Requirements In November 2012, the European Tire Labeling Regulation was introduced, thus requiring manufacturers to directly inform the customer of the tire s key performance attributes. As a result, manufacturers focused their attention on producing quality, high performance tires that reduce carbon emission and increase fuel efficiency through low rolling resistance. Although Europe is at the forefront of this evolution, the global trend toward tire labeling is spreading to other regions. As a technology leader in Solution-SBR, Styron offers a product range of advanced generation SSBR, which addresses the need for sustainable solutions while maintaining key performance attributes: handling, lower rolling resistance, and better wet grip performance. Styron understands and anticipates the challenges of its customers: the need for better mobility, energy efficiency, increased safety, better performance, and lowering wear because one of the biggest challenges for the future will be the scarcity of materials. The tread in a passenger car tire can contribute up to 40-50% of its rolling resistance therefore better new generation tire treads lead to lower fuel consumptions and less CO₂ emissions. When designing sustainable tires, also known as green tires, there are three different components to take into account: The tread design: it reflects approximately 1/3 of the total tire weight. The tread composition: the decreased rolling resistance and heat build-up of tires requires a limitation of hysteretic energy loss and improved filler distribution. The rubber matrix: the enhanced interaction of polymer chain ends with fillers such as silica or carbon black. Styron has utilized its strong understanding of SSBR to develop a multi generation proprietary functionalization technology: SPRINTAN SLR series of Solution-SBR. This new technology enables tire producers to expand the magic triangle without making tradeoffs among the three key properties rolling resistance, wet grip and abrasion resistance. SPRINTAN Functionalized SSBR is a key enabler for tire makers to upgrade their tire line with the objective to achieve the best rating according to the tire labeling (A-A). Industrial Rubber Goods Applications Versatile and High Quality Standard Polymers Used in Multiple Rubber Goods Applications ESBR and Ni BR grades are multi-purpose rubbers and used in a variety of applications such as conveyor belts, anti-vibration parts for the automotives, industrial hoses, mats, rollers and other general rubber goods. Our ESBR BUNA SB dry and oil extended polymers are recognized by the industry for delivering outstanding advantages in processability and performances on the final product. Our Ni-BR BUNA cis 132 grade offers a superior mix of various properties, such as good abrasion, flex-cracking resistance, fatigue life, low hysteresis, and excellent resilience. Other product features include acceptance of high filler and oil loadings without significant alteration of other properties. Plastics Modification Low-Cis Polybutadiene Rubber is Used as an Impact Modifier in Polystyrene and ABS The inner liners of refrigerators, food packaging and the housing of many consumer electronics require durability and functionality. Lithium Butadiene Rubber (Li-BR) grades from Styron are used to toughen polystyrene. A content of approximately 10% of polybutadiene rubber is added to the polystyrene matrix and creates a high-impact resistant product (HIPS). In addition Li-BR is applicable in the mass polymerization of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene co-polymers (ABS). Styron s SE PB grades ensure the production of mass ABS is consistently of high quality and offers an excellent balance between impact strength and gloss. ABS is mainly used in automotive interiors; furniture such as edge bands and wall/door liners; sanitary and signage. 1

In 2012, Styron started up a new SSBR manufacturing facility in Schkopau, Germany to meet growing demand, providing an additional capacity of 50,000 ton per year. Schkopau is home to four worldscale rubber trains that supply Styron s tire customers around the world. It is the cradle for rubber where Styron s best-in-class rubber R & D facility is also situated.
