3 Mystery Solved Some of you (those who read the call for help) may remember I was having trouble with my engine when I first started it up after a long rest. Oil was gushing out of the dipstick hole after a few seconds. I called a wrecker to take the car to The English Garage. David worked his magic and discovered that the plastic crankcase ventilation provided with the new air filter was way too small and causing pressure buildup in the crankcase. He took a drill and opened it up and everything worked fine. Note to others who may use the paper filter kit from Victoria British on their Weber carbs: Drill out the crankcase ventilation connector at the carburetor first. New Headers Another problem solved: The engine sounded like there was no muffler at all. Turned out that the middle two pipes were not making contact with the engine. I ordered new headers and when they arrived, they were a much better design. There was a note stuck to the pipes saying the paint on the headers was not heat proof, so I sprayed them with heat proof paint. The first time I started the car, it looked like it was on fire; lots of smoke and the paint just curled up. I guess I should have removed the not-heatproof-paint first. This time I removed the headers from the car, sanded them to the bare metal and followed the directions on the can completely. It said to bake at 250 for 30 minutes, cool 30 minutes, bake at 350 for 3

One step that I have left out on my bumpers is using 3M Automix EZ Sand Flexible Parts Repair. This is a product that can be mixed similarly to Bondo and used (in small amounts) to fill scratches, gouges, and dents in rubber bumpers. Set up time is dependent on the ambient temperature but is usually hard in about 15 minutes and can be sanded when hardened. You may have to mix several batches to fill a larger area. It is possible to do the work of sanding and painting while the bumper is on the car, but you run the risk of accidentally sanding the auto s finish and also have to mask everything when you begin the painting process. I will assume that you have removed the rubber cover from the bumper. Begin by washing the entire bumper with a strong solution of Dawn and then rinsing thoroughly. This is to remove any grease or oil before you begin the sanding. If there is grease on the material before you begin, you will only succeed in smearing it all over the bumper and that will cause serious problems later. After the bumper has dried, use the Prep-All Wax & Grease Remover to wipe down all surfaces to be sanded. Use a lint-free cloth for this. Next, wet sand the entire bumper with the 220 grit sandpaper using water continuously to keep the paper from clogging. Don t leave off the water! You can use the paper with your hand or a sanding block. There are commercially available sanding blocks in the $6.00 to $10.00 range and can be a real savings on the skin. Sand all of the paint off down to the original finish. In some tight places you will have to use your hands. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry, preferably overnight. 4

5 Wipe it down completely again with the Wax and Grease remover. Since the remover evaporates quickly it is not necessary to wait long before the next step. Use the tack cloth over the entire surface to remove and lint, dust, or microscopic debris. Now you are ready to start the painting. For ease of application, set the bumper with the surface to be painted facing up across a set of saw horses or similar holding device. I sprayed my bumpers in the driveway on a large trash bin covered with a drop cloth. Use the adhesion promoter (primer) first. Keep the spray can about 6 inches from the surface and move across the surface, applying an even, thin coating. You are not trying to do the entire priming in one coat. Put a very thin coat on and let it dry for about 15 minutes before applying the next coat. It will take three or four coats to cover thoroughly. The one problem with this step is that the primer does not visibly change the look of the bumper (it is clear) and so you must mentally keep track of coverage. Allow the last coat to dry for about an hour before beginning the actual painting. Remember, you are not trying to completely cover the bumper in a single coat! The first coat will be very thin and you can still easily see through it. Allow it to dry about 15 minutes. Apply additional coats, allowing drying time between coats until you have complete coverage. After the last coat, allow the bumper to dry overnight. When you start again the next day, begin by wet-sanding the entire surface with 320 grit paper. This time you are only smoothing the surface and the sanding time is much shorter. After the surface has been dulled, rinse with clear water and allow it to dry completely before further painting. Before starting the next coat, wipe down the bumper with a tack cloth again to remove dust or specks. Apply several light coats as previously and allow to dry overnight. Finally, using the same procedures, wet sand with 400 grit, rinse, and allow to dry overnight. Apply the final finish in several light coats until you have a nice smooth surface. Allow to dry overnight before reinstalling on the car. Be careful on the installation, it is easy to scratch the surface. For each of my bumpers, it took a little over 2 cans of the Bumper Coating. I would suggest buying an extra can or two of the spray for touch-ups if needed. 5

6 30 minutes, cool for thirty minutes, then bake at 450 for 30 minutes.
