Translation of page 3 Editorial Are you patient? Two years ago, in our inaugural issue, we were fortunate to introduce our readers to the Liebherr LTM as a model from NZG. In the same issue, we featured a report from Urs Peyer about the P&H 4100XPC, at work in a gold mine in the US. Two years later, we can reconnect to both of these themes. Carsten Bengs writes about the new luffing jib and matching extension set for the LTM 11200, flagship in the Liebherr mobile crane line up. For the front cover he shows us a breathtaking picture of the model of the P&H 4100XPC from TWH in 1:50 scale. The luffing jib was speculated about earlier and the model of the mining excavator was in the pipeline. Collectors are a patient folk. They are certainly more patient than the writer of these lines. It gives me a giant headache when once again the model planned for the front page has not shown up in time; the fear of a blank front cover gives me a few sleepless nights. Patience also relates to suspense and happy expectation. The longer the wait, the longer the expectation of a happy event lasts. However, perhaps you belong to the group of collectors that feel vexed when the expected model has not arrived at their favourite dealer. The dealer tells you, maybe for the second time, that the model has not arrived yet. Better luck next time. You have already made space in your display cabinet for the planned new acquisition. However, it influences the hobby budget positively if not all new releases arrive at the promised time. Patience is also part of the Christmas season. Do you have your entire gift giving planned? If you give a BAGGERMODEL- LE subscription, you give a gift that keeps on giving all of In addition, in order to hand the lucky recipient something tangible immediately you will be receive a copy of this issue completely free with your gift subscription! May you have patience, and may you have time for the hobby during the busy Advent time. Have fun reading the magazine. Daniel Wietlisbach BAGGERMODELLE online:

Translation of pages 6 9 New on the market CCM 1:48 This model looks at first glance like a variation of a model for the 769. It is, however, the B version and different in so many details, so that CCM had to develop most of the parts from scratch. The chassis, including the gear tunnel, hydraulic tank, air tanks and gear housing, are correct to scale and were retained from the older 769 model. The wheels used are the same, although they are distinctively different from the original. The new tires display the raised Goodyear logo, a very welcome detail addition. The radiator grille, the recessed headlights and the front bumper are the same as on the 769 and correlate with the originals. The driver s cabin is completely new, however, with the correct handgrips and rear view mirrors. The window wipers were omitted and the glass for the windows is not flush mounted, but is a plastic casting inserted behind the windows. The pierced steps are very delicate. The bin is new and has been re-designed to optimize performance, just like on the prototype. The V-shaped indention in the bin allows for a lesser loading height while maintaining the same loading capacity. The bin is very nicely done, down to the photoetched protection fence over the cabin. The paint is applied evenly and covers the model nicely. All lettering, including the Pacman logo is very sharp and legible. Accompanying the model is a small replica of the original leaflet that also contains the serial number of the model. The production run is limited to 900 pieces. Horst Möhler 1:50 scale There is now a functional diaphragm wall hook attachment for medium-sized excavators on offer from Horst Möhler. The grapplerlike attachment is similar to that of the Leffer model. It comes with completely spliced in cables and is painted. Available only by calling directly: +49 (0) NZG 1:50 scale Some new and attractive company paint schemes are found in the fall line up. First is the Liebherr LB 28 in the red Soletanche Bachy color of the VINCI group. The Sennbogen 835M is now available in two variants from the Netherlands. First, in light blue and yellow from OOC and the second in the green/white/grey de Waard colors. The four axle Mercedes Actros concrete mixer truck in the green/red paint scheme of the Strohmeier company and the self-propelling Scheuerle SPMT in the Riga-Baumann colors will be welcome addition for all heavyduty transport fans. (The last three have no pictures). The Doosan Moxy MT 31, first introduced on the last Bauma, is now available from dealers. 4 Translation of pages 6 9 Yet another nice color combination graces the road-rail Liebherr A 900C ZW van Roon Rail and the Komatsu PC210LC from Weidler. For Feldmayr fans comes the long awaited Liebherr LR 1300, including derrick attachment, in the house blue color. Wiking 1:87 scale Some very welcome re-issues are the Hanomag tractor with side dumper unit with the lettering for Berliner Ziegelsplitt and the International flat deck truck in the IHC colors and lettering. Furthermore, a Unimog in a neutral blue color fits in with any model construction outfit. A set with two figures and some very welcome detail parts is completely new. NZG / Eberhard 1:50 scale This construction company, now well known outside the borders of Switzerland, has ordered a custom-made model from NZG. It is a Mercedes Actros mounted with a Liebherr concrete mixer body. The limited edition in the firm s colors is now available in limited numbers from setec-htm ( Conrad 1:50 scale The Liebherr concrete mixer on a MAN TGS five-axle chassis is a real Swiss truck. This type of truck is often seen on Swiss roads. That it is Swiss in origin is clearly evident by the diamond plate fenders. The three axles on the front are steerable and the driver s cabin may be tilted forward. Besides the version shown, there is also an exclusive version of the model in gold and black, available only from Liebherr. A four axle MAN TGX XXL appears new as an 8x4 heavy-duty tractor. The cabin is painted in a neutral black with Schwertransporte lettering. We will introduce the Palfinger PK crane mounted on the four-axled MAN TGS LX in detail in the next issue. The MAN TGS M all-wheel loader in a blue/red color combination is assembled from known components. The compact model is very versatile and so can be used in many situations. GMTS 1:50 scale The latest addition to the Golden Oldies line of trucks is the legendary Mercedes 2624 with rounded off hood. The photo etched radiator grille, the headlights, recessed into the front bumper bar and the very delicate window wipers are all especially pleasing as are distance-gauging rods, the rear-view mirrors and the prototypically thin rubber gaskets on the windows on this very nice model. It dumps its load using a three part metal cylinder apparatus. Motorart 1:50 / 1:35 scales The smaller size of construction machines are rarely produced in 1:50 scale. Positive exceptions are the compact loader JCB 330 also known as Volvo MC155C. The model is very finely detailed. A complete interior can be seen behind the operating cabin door. The windows are flush mounted and the rear spotlights are separate plastic parts. The lifting mechanism can be extended to the maximum height but, unfortunately, cannot be lowered completely to the ground level. The Optimas Toro H 88 Stone layer has been released in the exotic 1:35 scale. The stone layer can lay or lift groups of pavers and is used when these products are used to build sidewalks and large parking areas. Herpa 1:87 Herpa transports a gigantic box by road. A MAN TGX XXL 8x4 heavy-duty transport truck unit in the Rachbauer color scheme is pulling a Goldhofer lowboy trailer. The new MAN TGA 6x6 with dumping trailer from Carmel fits seamlessly into the line-up of the Herpa in-house construction firm s red/silver color scheme. Siku in 1:87 / 1:50 scales In 1:50 scale there is new the three axle Actros with concrete mixer and the New Holland T9.560 articulated tractor. This tractor would look good pulling some scraper trailers. A real tower crane from Liebherr is a fine thing. This unit can be operated with the two winches on the model. Leibherr s crane offers a lot of play value. 4

Translation of pages Walter Baertsch collects whatever he likes Since 40 years by Daniel Wietlisbach When Walter Baertsch started his collection, his goal was, like many other collectors, to have a complete collection of 1:50 construction models. This was not a utopian goal at the time. Today, however, this would be an impossible undertaking as very few such models were produced during the 70s. His love of construction machines enabled him to amass this impressive collection over the last forty years. The boy with the bicycle The highway construction sites of the 60s and 70s left a lasting impression on this son of a locomotive engineer. The father would take little Walt to a 20km distant highway construction site perched on a homemade children s seat, on his Velosolex scooter. At the time, there were still many steamrollers in action. The six-year old boy had the joy of riding on one of these steel monsters, an experience as unforgettable as seeing the scraper and bottom discharge scrapers from Euclid at work. Once the little boy returned home, he re-enacted the action seen at the site on the floor of his bedroom using machines from Corgi and Dinky Toys. Determination and enjoyment are the guiding principles behind the very impressive collection of Walter Baertsch. He used the same principles in his professional career There would be many more visits to construction sites in Walti s life. At the age of 13, he made a conscious decision to start collecting. He would ride his bicycle to the nearby town to buy his first construction models one by one from the only dealer who sold construction models. Caterpillar 621 Scraper (NZG 122), 621 with Athey Rear dumper (NZG 132) and 988-wheeled loader (NZG 134) are still in his display cases today and are in mint condition. Construction machines had a magnetic attraction for the budding collector. For example, a construction company opened a construction waste disposal site near the family home. An Oliver OC 96 tracked loader or a Cat 933G operated on the site. The young construction machine enthusiast was always there when one of the machines was at work levelling out the spoil. At the end of the workday, much to his joy, Walti was allowed to help with lubricating the machines and was even allowed to lower the lifting gear on the machines. Later on, riding shotgun besides the drivers was top on the list of activities for the boy. At age 12, he was able to operate the machines by himself. His ability was well known among the truck drivers, and it was not uncommon that when doorbell rang some evenings Walti had to go out and pull a truck out that was stuck in the dirt at the site. By now, the highway construction sites were 60 km away, which was no problem for a boy with a bicycle, and so he belonged to the group of frequent visitors to the site. He recorded all progress dutifully with a camera that he had received as a gift. During those years, he even persisted and made a day trip to the Bauma in Munich! There he spent a great deal of time collecting prospectuses from the manufacturers at the show. He never stopped collecting them and now possesses over 30 binders full of such material; it is a hob- 5

Translation of pages by within a hobby. His fascination with construction became a passion and evolved into the wish to learn the trade of construction machine mechanic or truck mechanic. Discovering the world Unfortunately, at the time, there was no apprenticeship on these trades. His father urged him to learn something that was universally usable. In hindsight, becoming a machinist was the right choice. However, as soon he had finished his apprenticeship, Walter Baertsch looked for a job as a construction machine mechanic. Finally, he was lucky to find one at Charles Keller in Zurich. Charles Keller was an importer for legendary names of construction equipment such as Euclid, Michigan, Koehring, Gradall and Kenworth. For the young mechanic who wanted to see something of the world this was a dream job. Because of service contracts for the firm, Walter Baertsch spent four years in Algeria, where he was responsible for maintaining a fleet of 100 Kenworth trucks for the oil fields there. Six months spent in Saudi Arabia on a highway construction site and the work in Algeria are among the memories he will never forget. And his collection? It grew slowly but surely during his last school years and a bit faster during his apprenticeship due to his new income. He acquired models that he enjoyed and with which he had some kind of connection. These models where mainly from NZG, Gescha and Conrad, the very well known manufacturers of the time. It was only later on, after he made contact and stayed in touch regularly The Collector Walter Baertsch is 57 years old. He is a qualified machinist. After finishing his apprenticeship became a construction machine mechanic. He has been working for the same company for the last 27 years and is on the road during the week all over Europe. Besides collecting model construction equipment, he also collects books about the genre and construction machine prospectuses. He is also interested in Schlüter tractors and lovingly maintains his 1977 VW Golf GTI. He lives with his wife and two daughters in Uster, Switzerland. with other collectors, did he learn about models from ATM and later EMD. These makers made models from originals that were correct in all details, something an enthusiast could only dream about until they arrived on the scene. On the EMD lists, Walter Baertsch found many of the machine models whose prototypes were very familiar to him. They included names such as Michigan, Euclid and Gradall, just to name a few. Determination on the job and with the hobby Today Walter Baertsch works for a company that makes centrifuges for sewage treatment plants. As a service mechanic, he was often on the road in Asia and even today, during the week, he travels all over Europe. He really enjoys the traveling aspect of his job and still likes what he does even after working for over 27 years. He shows the same kind of passion and determination when it comes to augmenting his collection which now stands at about 2000 models. The models in his collection are there mainly because he likes them. He has hardly ever sold a model out of his collection; even the models he bought at the beginning of collection are still in his possession. He is considering selling his 150 crane models since he has no room to display them properly. Most of his models are 1:50/ 1:48 scale, but he has a few in 1:87 and 1:32 scale. The collection of Walter Baertsch is almost complete and his want list is small. The latest acquisitions are the Liebherr HS855HD (NZG 837) and 225LC (NZG 838). As with all other construction machines, the technology they represent is the main reason for him to buy a new model. On of his most favourite models is the fully functional 95 ton Bucyrus steam shovel by TWH. He regularly visits dealers on his travels and so has been able to add many Asian models to his collection. He would have loved to connect to other collectors abroad, but without success. There is not a lot of time for the hobby during his busy workweek. However, it occupies him on most weekends during the fall and winter season. This is also little time now to kit-bash models, but it is something he will do in the future. 6

Translation of pages Luffing jib for the LTM from NZG Reaching new heights Two years ago, NZG presented the LTM crane, a flagship in their line up. Now the manufacturer from Nuremberg is trying to top this with the offer of a luffing jib kit for the model by Carsten Bengs The luffing jib kit for the highly detailed and fully functional model is very easy to attach to the LTM crane model, thanks to the excellent instructions and the tools that are included with the kit. A set of supplementary elements is available. To assemble the crane with the luffing jib, leave off the four uppermost telescoping elements, as on the prototype, due to weight concerns arising from the fact that the luffing jib can be mounted only on the T3 boom. A lid painted in the warning color and the Liebherr decal caps the uppermost telescoping element as on the prototype which is a very nice detail. Enlarge the drilled holes slightly for the attachment of the extra winch on the upper carriage in order to prevent any problems when driving home the threaded screws provided for it. Contrary to the prototype, where the gantry is already mounted and At a glance + detailing and equipment + functionality the pre-drilled holes for the fasteners have been fouled by paint attached to the cables, this detail has to be added by the modeller. It pays to take your time here, because the result is worth it. One half of the cable provided in the kit fits on to a secondary winch drum that is used to splice the gantry in. Once this has been accomplished the drum is no longer used. The cable on the drum that controls the jib movement is needed when the crane is erected to its full height. There is plenty of scale cable available; take care when spooling it on to the winches. On the prototype, the gantry assembly is hoisted up with the lifting cables to the luffing jib and mounted there near the outrigger arms. NZG has used metal to model the outrigger arms that are attached using the screws provided. When the complete length of the unit is required, the outrigger arms are connected with two small steel guy-wire cables to the jib thus preventing sagging of the arms. Highly detailed handrails and safety tread walkways surround the winch to provide a safe work environment. On the footing piece as well as on the jib-arm guides, there are safety walk ways made from photo etchings; their silver paint scheme contrasts nicely with the rest of the model. They can be attached simply by inserting them into the predrilled holes. The footing piece by itself is also an ideal truckload on a lowboy trailer because the safety walks and railings can be taken off. A relapse prevention support arm prohibits the jib from going too far backwards. Using the third jib guide dolly wheel, a prototypical hoisting of the luffing jib can be achieved. For this purpose, the luffing jib tip is even equipped with an axle and wheels. On the prototype, this would help in supporting the tip of 7

Translation of pages the crane. It sits in a groove only at the tip and is there solely for helping in the erection of the jib. The basic set makes possible the assembly of a luffing jib that has a length of 54 metres on the original. There are enough pieces in the set to assemble the luffing jib in the versions of NA, NM and NI, as per the prototype. The NA version, that with the greatest diameter, must to be attached directly to the basis piece. The extension set has further elements that allow the length of the jib to be extended by a further 36 metres. This means that it is possible to simulate the many luffing jib variations as well as the fixed tip variations. A look at the original data sheet is a great help in assembling these. Perhaps it would be possible to include them in all further releases and incorporate the data sheet into the assembly instructions. All pictures shown are of the 42 metres variation. The luffing jib kit complements The LTM11200 crane model. NZG has created a truly overwhelming model in 1:50 scale that fulfills all wishes of the collector. 9 Translation of pages Liebherr R 984C Kibag from Conrad Blue Steel This exclusive model was commissioned by HTM (Heavy-Transport Models) situated in Gross- Gerau and made by Conrad in the blue and grey house colors of Kibag. By using the existing model of the Liebherr R 984C, a re-issue of a very sought after model was possible by Daniel Wietlisbach The R 984C with quick-change bucket and ripping tooth was available from Conrad in 2008 for only a very short time. This single series model disappeared very quickly from dealer s shelves, and since then has been one of the most sought-after models from Conrad. The reason why collectors are so happy with the re-issue of the model in Kibag colors is simple: the machines of the construction machine company from Zurich do not have any trademarks, but have large Kibag signs painted on the equipment. The company was very happy to oblige and willingly licensed the model, because there is no better way to get a lot of publicity than with the release of a new model. An excavator for touching A few years have passed since the issuing of the model. It cannot compete with the latest models as far as detailing is concerned. However, despite this it just oozes something that modellers of today are often complaining about missing, that is, the high quality, solid craftsmanship of a model made in Germany with a very high proportion of metal. There is something special about the fact that you can take a model out of the package without having to study the instruction leaflet first. Of course, we did measure the model, calculated, and compared it with the prototype. Other than being 2 mm short in the height department and having tracks that are too wide (900 mm), everything else is correct and matches the original. The lower carriage leaves the impression of being massive, typical for a mining excavator model. Unfortunately, less prototypical are the track segments that are too wide and are made from single links. On the original, there is a choice of links that are 500, 600 or maximal 750 mm, which is markedly smaller. The track segments are made up in twin links as on the original. Since they are not sprung, they hang loose and hang down a bit. The very visible driving wheels are modeled nicely; even the Liebherr logo is visible! The running wheels are not visible behind their protective skirting and have not been modeled; the support wheels are non-functional and have been cast on. The replication of the ladders completes this part of the model. The upper carriage and the equipment The upper carriage constructed mainly from nicely engraved brass parts. All air vents are modeled and are at the right place and correct in number. There is an anti skid surface shown on all walkways, made in the same way. The handgrips and rails are made from metal and are only a fraction over scale. This

Translation of pages Kibag Liebherr R years ago, the second Liebherr R 984 arrived in Switzerland. The proud owner of the big excavator was the firm of Kibag. This is why the yellow Liebherr color disappeared under a coat of blue and light gray paint. The company even took the time and effort to grind off the cast-on numbers 984 on the counterweights in order to apply a large Kibag signature sign. The R 984 is at work, paired with two Faun dump trucks in a gravel pit on the shore of Lake Zurich. The power plant for the excavator weighing in at 88 tons is a Cummins 6 cylinder diesel engine, producing 507 hp. The R 984 was developed from the B series to the C series now in use having a weight of 120 tonnes and producing 685 hp. Liebherr is testing the R 9150 in Colmar, it is the successor to the R 984C. leaves a positive impression, especially when looking at the rails beside the driver s cabin. The cabin has interior detailing and the windows are fitted flush with the surface. The rubber gaskets are missing; inclusion of this detail would have improved the model tremendously. This goes as well for the missing window wipers and rear-view mirrors. The equipment has only bare bones detailing. The only flexible hydraulic lines can be found from At a glance + choice of prototype + solid quality width of the tracks the upper carriage to the boom, but they are only cast on as a detail on the upper side of the boom. The bucket and the ripping tooth including the articulation are very nicely done, as is the quick-change feature that functions prototypically. Here the modeller can change back and forth to his heart s content. This gives the model great play value. The coloring is without fault and well executed. The lettering is sharp, covering and legible and is correct as per the original. 10

Translation of pages P&H 4100XPC from TWH in 1:50 scale Big and beautiful It has been quite a while since TWH produced a real construction machine. The return to the market of the company that generally specializes in detailing is impressive by Daniel Wietlisbach Since we introduced the prototype extensively in the inaugural issue, we will skip discussion of the gigantic machine here. Therefore, we can concentrate wholly with this impressive model. It comes in a very large and extremely solid package, reminiscent of the size used to pack an old-fashioned tube TV in. In the box are copies of two, scaled down, sales leaflets, detailed instructions on how to unpack the model from the Styrofoam packaging, and how to insert the batteries, which are included. As well, it shows how the two separately packaged railing pieces have to be attached. At the platform on top of the stairs near the operator s cabin, the manufacturer has attached one handrail. This means that the part packaged for this purpose can be used as a spare, should the need arise. In the unlikely case that some of the lamps do not work contact the internet address, which is included, for a replacement spot light. The model is correct in all measurements when compared to the prototype. Lower carriage The original excavator, weighing 1460t sits on a very solid lower carriage that is modeled very convincingly. The model sits on 2210m wide ground steel plates that were optional in the original. The metal tracks, put under tension by the lead wheel, are made from 41 (42 in the original) individual segments. The support wheels, not visible on the original, have been left off. The required operating running wheels, a must for a model of this weight, are there and in the correct number. It is possible to drive the excavator on a surface, as long as it is not too smooth. The large engine housing complete with nuts and bolts and the connecting electric cables is very detailed. The very noticeable large cable drum, usually found near all electro excavators, has not been modeled. Perhaps this something a detail maker could make and offer in the future. Anybody who wants to study the details from all sides, needs good lighting because the prototypical black paint does not allow all the fine details to show. The upper carriage The connection between the upper and lower carriage is very solid. Nothing rocks back and forth or is loose, despite the very heavy boom. The upper carriage swings around very easily. The machine room, cast from one solid piece, is almost completely covered with details. Every time one looks at it, one sees new details. For example, all running boards are covered with photo-etched grilles as are the anti skid walks on the upper carriage. The right hand side stairs are lowered hydraulically. On the left side is a ladder that can be lowered. The finely made safety railings are very strong. Thanks to the fact that they are made of metal, they can be straightened without breaking should they be accidentally bent out of shape. All doors are 11

Translation of pages set in separately, but only the two doors to the operator s cabin can be opened. Separately applied parts include door handles, horns, fire extinguisher, antennas, rear view mirror simple headlights and spotlights. The lights come to life with builtin strong light emitting diodes (LEDs) activated by a switch hidden below the counter weights. The front half of the operator s cabin (the original sits at 10m height) is almost completely glassed in and affords the operator and engineer a good look at the work place. The cab includes the chair of the operator with two joysticks and, on the left, two monitors for the engineer. As a further detail, a secondary workstation for the instructor, a row behind the driver, is included. A small, separate empty room behind the driver, originally for an optional toilette, is modeled. Equipment Naturally, the size of the dipper and boom are huge. Even here, all details are modelled correctly. While the boom is fixed to the A- At a glance + Choice of prototype + Detailing and equipment + Lighting The way railings are oriented gantry with solid grey cables, the blue cables from the drums in the engine house service the dipper. A large key inserted through a window in a door on the left side manipulates the boom and dipper. The same key is used to change the adjustments on the dipper. The connection piece hides very cleverly on the right side of the boom. The opening of the flap on the bucket scoop is operated prototypically by tugging on the appropriate cable. Flap and bucket are convincingly engraved with all the details of the original 65m³ capacity. The paint job and lettering are first class, a standard we are accustomed to from TWH. A multitude of warning signs and lettering complete the outstanding model. 12

We congratulate the winners! 13

Translation of pages Wind turbine plant from Herpa in 1:87 scale Transport for power by Daniel Wietlisbach and Michael Compensis There are two sets with three tractor-trailer units each for the transportation of the tower parts and propeller blades and a separate lowboy trailer for the engine compartment and the hub. These were released in stages and were sold out by the factory in a very short time. All vehicles come in the very attractive color scheme of the Belgian transport company of P. Adams. Now, the wind turbine with all its parts is available separately, and there is a motorizing and lighting set to bring life to complete wind farm models. The power plant for the turbines takes the Vestas power unit as a prototype, modeled slightly smaller, even though the assembly height of a turbine is 1100 mm. Therefore, the lettering for Vestas was not applied on the turbine. The assembly of the wind turbine kit is straightforward and requires no glue. The tower parts and the blades use a bayonet connecting system and snap together. Transportation of the tower parts. The most interesting parts of the sets are the three Belgian lowboy trailers with new adapters for the transportation of the tower parts. Herpa took only half a year to produce all the models for the transportation of a complete Wind turbine power plant The adaptors match the existing lowboy trailer models from Goldhofer and are very nicely detailed and fully functional. They can be adjusted to other diameters and are versatile in transporting pipes and such. Furthermore, they can be made into the correct configuration for empty runs and so are real boons to collectors of 1:87 scale heavy transport models. For the top tower piece, the longest single piece overall, it would have been better to use a semi-lowboy trailer, available from Herpa, for this purpose. The previously mentioned bayonet connecting system unfortunately detracts visually. The only remedy is to saw off the protrusions with the knowledge that they At a glance + Choice of prototype + Paint job and lettering + Accessory parts Choice of trailers and chassis Bayonet connecting fixtures on wind turbine tower then can no longer be assembled. Maybe some mounting rings that fit in between the elements with a thread and bayonet fixtures would have been a better solution. Turbine blades, engine house and hub on the road The propeller blades are loaded on three identical, four-axled Teletrailers. For a little bit more visual interest, the set could have included a three-axled trailer. The load is secured with the included blocks. The very impressive engine housing, protected during the transportation with a blue tarpaulin, as the prototype, was loaded on to a Goldhofer Prism-Module combination. This is not quite prototypical. A lowboy trailer or a telescoping bridge trailer would have been better. The latter, even in the correct colour scheme, can be found as number in the Herpa programme. Last, but not least, the hub of the turbine is delivered on a Nooteboom Pendel X lowboy trailer. Red tarpaulins are modeled on the 14

Translation of pages three openings for the blades of the turbine as on the prototype. Like all lowboy trailers, this model has many extra parts such as stakes and warning signs thus making the trailer useable for the transportation of other goods. Tractor units There are several tractor units from Scania, Volvo and MAN. The application of headlights, spotlights and cowcatchers creates variety. One cabin is correct for the P. Adams paint scheme: the Blue Thunder from Volvo for the turbine blades set. The original is on an older type, and the others show that the manufacturer from Dietenhofen has taken a short cut. All of the units are built upon the MAN chassis, so that only the TGX XXL in the tower set is prototypically correct. The same goes for the heavy-duty connecting tower, except that the MAN is modeled with unconvincing black moulding. The delivery of the three-axled units from the blade set without any rear lights is an obvious mistake. Herpa will send those replacement parts free of charge to modellers who request them; however, they are from the fenders of the Scania third series. The paint on the models is correct and the lettering is correct, sharp and legible: excellent as usual. 15

Translation of pages Liebherr L 550 from Schuco in 1:87 scale Small is beautiful by Daniel Wietlisbach Among all the large wheeled loaders from Liebherr, the L 550 is the smallest. It has a total operating weight of about 16.5 tons and has a shovel load carrying capacity of tons. It has the option of being equipped with either the 3.2 (construction) or the 6.0 m³ (light material) scoop. The power plant is a Liebherr D934S four-cylinder engine producing 129 kw. The model from Schuco The model is correct in all measurements including height. The combined metal-plastic construction used by the manufacturer is such that it is difficult to say which parts are made with what kind of material. The front of the unit has the Z-kinematic lifting gear and the standard bucket. They are very Schuco s newest arrival is the Liebherr L 550 2plus2. This model has been realized in a combination of metal and plastic parts well executed and functional. The fine black rivets are not obtrusive and do not detract much from the overall view. It would have been an improvement if they were painted in the same yellow as the unit. The wheel rims are especially nice, as they are also detailed on the inner side. This detail shows nicely when the arms are raised. The tires are made from a soft rubber material in which no seams are visible. The massive engine hood on the rear of the unit is cast in one piece and is very nicely engraved. The rear axle has been made to swing. The cabin is made from a clear plastic casting that has been colored white on the lower part and on the ROPS part. The window wiper and the rubber gaskets of the windows are delicate, three-dimensional castings, colored black. This makes a very realistic looking modern operator s cabin. Additional detailing on the model are the colored head and rear lights, spotlights and rear view mirrors. The plastic handrails are somewhat out of scale. The paint job and the lettering are faultless. The difference between the gloss coat used on the model and the contrasting flat paint used on the air intake filters, and mud flaps is a nice detail. Schuco has released a convincing model with this Liebherr L 550 2plus2. 16

Translation of page 30 Eye Candy Terex 33100B OHS is responsible for the very well executed model of the Terex 33100B in the traditional green color scheme by Albert Schmid In 1997, Terex introduced the 33100B, which hitherto had been redesigned several times. It was the last successor to the dumper, design designation 33-11, developed by General Motors (GM) in The dump truck, built by Terex Equipment Limited in Motherwell, Scotland has a carrying capacity of 91 t. The empty weight is 68.6 t and the total loaded weight is 160 t. The power plant used is a 988 hp Cummins KTA-38-C, 12-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine with a turbo charger. In 1998, the type designation was changed to TR-100 (Terex Rear Dump). At the same time, the colour scheme was changed to Terex white. The English model makers of OHS Models (Outram Hire & Sales) appeared for the first time in 2001/2002. Their line of models included some spectacular pieces in the upper price segment. Among them were, for example, the RH 400 from O&K and the P&H 4100XPB to mention only two. The models and kits were farmed out to several different model makers; unfortunately, this led to sometimes grave quality differences. However, the Terex 33100B in 1:50 scale is well executed. Partially made from brass, it is rich on details and has the model number 502. Unfortunately, the front axle is not steerable. The bin, tires and cylinders are resin castings. The mud flaps, made from rubber with a re-enforcing web of fabric are very nicely done. By the way, the name Terex originates from 1968, when GM dreamed up this name for their construction machine line. It comes from combining the two Latin words, Terra (=earth) and Rex (=King), therefore an Earth King. 17

Translation of page 31 New books Baumaschinen 2012 Thomas Wilk, published by Heel Verlag GmbH 12 pages and front cover ISBN Thomas Wilk has published his Caterpillar calendar regularly since 2004 for the Christmas season. We Swiss are honored this time by the inclusion, on the front page, of the 966H wheeled loader from the Ceneri tunnel construction site. The firm of Eberhard is again present, this time with a 953D LGP tracked loader. The pictures of the 365C ES UHD from Zindel and a M322D MH were also taken in Switzerland. An 824H wheeled dozer and the 963D tracked dumper from Germany are shown. The 725 articulated truck and the D7E dozer are at home in the Netherlands. The picture of the 992K is from Belgium. The giant machines, 797B dump truck and 24M grader were taken in Wyoming, US and the 621 Water carrier helps to keep the dust down in Las Vegas. The calendar shows how this market leader is a truly international company. (up) Roadbuilding Construction Equipment at Work Edgar A. Browning, published by Iconografix, 126 pages, black and white photographs English, soft cover ISBN Once more, a book for all lovers of construction machines. It is a great delight to thumb thru the pages. Edgar Browning gives us a look back in time, describing the highway construction in the State of Vermont, from the late 50s to the end of the 70s. Among the very well-known machines shown are the Cat D9G, Euclid TS24, 180 Pay Hauler, Michigan 475, P&H 1055 and Northwest 80D all busy moving earth and rocks. Also worth a mention and discovered among the photographs in the book is the 2400 Lima drag line excavator with a bucket capacity of 6m3. Better known from the surface mining sector is the Dart 600 wheeled loader with a huge bucket capacity of 13m³, and it s very recognizable sidemounted cabin, shown in this book. (up) Baumaschinen 2012 Published by Wochenkalender, Verlag Podszun, 52 weekly pages, 25 x 21 cm, ring binding ISBN This calendar shows, as previous ones, 52 construction machines at work, exhibitions or during the winter break. Historical machines number about a third of the total pictured. Many of the major manufacturer like Kaelble, Bell, Atlas, Bauer, Liebherr, Hitachi, Terex, Lima, Menck, Caterpillar, O&K, Weserhütte, Hanomag, Volvo, Komatsu and many more are shown as are some more obscure machines. For example, there is a breaker equipped Terex, a Liebherr PR 732 with a giant plough, in the process of laying cable, a Liebherr R944 as a truck mounted excavator and the rock face cutting disc attachment from Vermeer. The calendar is designed to be mounted on the wall or stood up on a surface. Every page has an empty space to make notations. (dw) Jahrbuch Baumaschinen 2012 Several Authors Published by: Verlag Podszun 144 pages, approximately 290 photos, 24 x 17 cm, Soft cover ISBN This yearbook, the eleventh in the series, maintains the tried and true concept of many pictures and less text. An almost standard feature is the report from Heinz Herbert Cohrs, this time about the merger of Bucyrus/ O&K by Caterpillar and the recovery of a Long-reach excavator in North Germany. A Baggermodelle contributor, Thomas Wilk is also present with a report about the cleaning out of the special refuse site by Köllikon (Switzerland). Ernst Weber reports about the recovery of a Menck M60 and about the Bucyrus-Erie 61B and 71B he found in Brazil. Ad Gevers describes how the Dutch are transporting sand using pumps. Fritz Hanish reports about giant machines at work in Austrian quarry operations. (up) 18

Translation of page 33 Tinplate Concrete mixer from Rico-Sanson In the mid-1970s, Franz-Carl-Weber offered this handsome concrete mixer truck. Some boys must have had sleepless nights after seeing this truck by Robert Bretscher When first looking at the giant truck with multiple moving parts, the name of Tonka trucks comes to mind. However, this truck is a Spanish product that was built under licence by Rico-Sanson. Toy truck specialists in the know recognize it right away as a Tonka product, due to the very solid construction and the shape of the cabin on this three-axled truck. Rico had managed to give the model a truly distinctive look and some unique features, despite the licence. Unlike a similar Tonka product, Rico equipped the truck with two swinging axles on the rear. This gave the truck a more realistic look when used on uneven ground. Moreover, although the engine housing was not altered, the driver s cabin has space for two people. The Tonka product has, at best, a half cabin, barely wide enough for one. A further very attractive detail is the movable concrete drum that starts turning as soon as the truck is moving. Very stout metal axles with plastic gears drive the drum from the front wheels. That it was possible as a child, to sit on the unit and drive down a bumpy hillside, without any danger of injury, was remarkable. In 1971, Tonka and its licensing partners agreed to build especially safe toys for children. Among the criteria agreed to: unbreakable windows, no sharp edges and an extraordinarily tough tin construction. The sample shown here has signs of being well used; they come from many years of sandbox use by the editor of BAGGERMODELLE. By the way, the name Tonka Toys comes from a lake in Minnesota by the name of Minnetonka, a Sioux word. Tonka stands for large in the Sioux language. Tonka started producing gardening tool models in 1946 and evolved over time to become the largest toy maker in the US. Between 1964 and 2004 Tonka issued licences for countries around the globe including Germany, England, France, Canada, Ireland, Holland, Italy, Austria, Japan and to the afore mentioned Spanish company of Rico Juguentes. A couple of workers from the very well known toy maker Payá Hermanas SA founded Rico in In the beginning, as did many toy makers, they produced tin products. Before changing to toy production, Rico produced ice storage containers. 19

Translation of pages Diorama construction with the sand product from Habuss Part I Dig yourself a pit by Daniel Wietlisbach It was at the Minibauma in Sinsheim where I found this material. The excitement of the discovery and the sales spiel of the possibilities for its use made my fingers itch; I just had to try out the material from Habuss ( For quite a while I had in mind to build a small show piece, inspired by a picture in the book Euclid Earth-Moving Equipment by Eric C. Orlemann. There are two Euclid R-10s in the picture; one of them is in the process of being loaded by a cableoperated excavator of an unknown maker. Of course, my diorama would also provide a good place to stage other maker s models. The sand from Habuss is offered in a variety of sizes: mm, 0-3 mm and mm. The color of this material is beige, like Jurassic Limestone and therefore is ideal for use in a limestone quarry setting. However, I wanted to test the material to see how well it accepted color. Therefore, my construction pit is set in the flatland and has brown earth. The very special feature of this Habuss play sand is the how it is worked. When it is mixed with water, it becomes a malleable paste that hardens as it dries. It is possible to break it into small pieces A new modeling compound that can be reformed and used repeatedly is optimal for use in the making of dioramas at any time and start all over again. The material can be dampened down, re-structured and formed in any way desired. New tracks can be imprinted. It is possible to play until the desired results are obtained. Dry paint pigments Pieces of Styrofoam covered with plaster-impregnated bandages create the base for the diorama. This light base form is ideal, because the material from Habuss is rather heavy once mixed with water. To simulate the impression made by truck tires and tracked vehicles, I recommend the fine grain version of the product. If necessary, some larger stone pieces could be mixed in, but I think it is better to scatter these, at random, at the end of the building process. In coloring the sand, the pigmented colors have the advantage in that the final color is known before use. Of course they will darken somewhat once the water is added. When mixing with water use less rather than more as it takes surpri- singly little liquid to achieve the desired consistency. The mixture should be spreadable, but not be runny. It is possible to add more dry sand to thicken the mixture if it is too runny. Use a modeling spatula to spread the mixture over the diorama surface to a depth of 5mm. To help the mix to adhere, brush the surface of the diorama s plaster bandage covering with water; this also prevents the mix from drying out prematurely. In order to prevent a completely flat look, dab the surface a paintbrush right away. Topcoat with tracks As a topcoat for the diorama, I use a product I make myself from potter s modeling clay. (See separate box) This is a perfect product in which to impress the traces of tracks and tires. If the scene is set in a lime stone quarry and the Habuss sand has its original color, omit this step. It is well known that there are fewer tracks visible on the harder limestone surface. On the top layer, I printed the tra- 20
