After listening to members describe their cool tools the theme that emerged was that these are really more of their go to tools. These are the tools that they go to time after time to get consistent results. John Vojtech, owner of UMM-USA led things off with his annual presentation of his new tools. Before giving us the 411 on these John recalled a funny story about a seminar he d been asked to give at an IPMS National Convention. John said he didn t see the need to do any formal preparation for the seminar. He of course knew all about his own tools and their use and did not think there would be many people in attendance. When he stepped on the stage at the seminar he was overwhelmed by the number of people. John who usually isn t at a loss for words got so nervous he forgot what he wanted to say. He recovered and gave a informative seminar. Cool Tools by Tom Reese John was prepared at our meeting and presented several new tools. The first were a couple of gluing jigs. One was a simple aluminum jig for gluing parts at right angles. The one I found more interesting was a jig with a protractor then enables the user to set any angle he wishes to glue. He also has a new line of aluminum sanding blocks to replace the wooden ones he previously marketed. These do not lose their shape when wet sanding, a shortcoming of the wooden blocks.
2 THE REPORTER THE OFFICIAL NEWSLET TER OF IPMS/LAKES REGION SCALE MODELERS PAGE 2 John also found a detail sander called the Mod Sander at a recent model show and is now a distributor. It looks like a dental tool with a small flat square on the end to which you apply a small adhesive backed square of sand paper. Really handy for those hard to get to spots. Art Giovannoni says Micro-Mark s Modelers Multi Tool is one of his favorites. It is a combination hobby knife holder, pin vise and hand vise all in one. Dave Haas likes the 4 sided polishing sticks from Sally s Beauty Supply. They re economical and work well. Robert Raver also counts of beauty tools among his cool tools. He discovered his wife s electric nail file with it s low speed is perfect for making quick work of sanding jobs. He also uses Dremel bits in it as well. He also likes the low power rotary tools from Harbor Freight Tools noting their low power and slow speeds for doing more delicate detailing. John also displayed a new punch set for larger scales as well as a miniature table saw. After John finished we opened the floor to members to say a few words about their cool or go to tools. Walt Fink s favorites include Flex-I-Files Cut-N- Trim sanding sticks which he says are great for all those hard to get to spots. Another abrasive product Walt is a big fan of is CRM Hobbies big sanding sticks. These have four grits and the synthetic abrasive lasts forever. Walt also counts his bodkin ( a stick with a needle on one end) as his second most important tool after his airbrush. He uses it primarily for scribing. One last essential for Walt is an anti static pistol. This removes the static charge from a model s surface in effect repelling dust and those pesky pet hairs! Ned Ricks addresses the need for holding parts for painting using foam blocks and sticks. In a similar vein Phil Pignataro says different size alligator clips and skewers are great for holding all those small parts and subassemblies for painting. Thanks to all for sharing their cool and go to tools. I for one definitely learned about some tools I had not previously considered but that I ll give a try!

Chris built it out of the box for an IPMS review. Chris liked the fact that the kit comes with markings for five different aircraft and finished his in VF-61 livery. Art Giovannoni: Art finished Minicraft s Boeing 314A Pan Am Dixie Clipper as Navy bureau # This was the first Presidential aircraft flying F.D.R. to Casablanca in January Art Giovannoni: This is one of three Mustangs Art completed in a 2 week period. Oh to be retired! This one is Bud Anderson s Old Crow from the 363rd fighter squadron 357th fighter group. John Graham: John s found a new passion in figure painting after attending the Lone Star Figure Show this past March. While there he attended a two day seminar presented by renowned figure paint Julio Cabos. Above is one of John s first efforts. I d say he learned quite a bit at that seminar!

On the left Accurate Miniatures P-51B flown by Capt. Don Gentile. On the right Tamiya s P-51B-10. This one in the markings of the aircraft flown by Edward Pappy Gignac. Both kits are 1/48 scale. Art Giovannoni: When Art gets tired of masking canopies he builds an armor kit. This one is Tamiya s 1/35 Deuce and a half. Art says you can shake the box and out comes a kit. William Wallace: William assembled this 1/18 P-38 Lighting which is produced by Ultimate Soldier Company. William especially likes the movable features. Art Giovannoni: The 1/48 Hobbyboss RF-80A kit only had an olive drab over gray scheme. Art opted to do a natural metal finish using Talon paints.
5 THE REPORTER THE OFFICIAL NEWSLET TER OF IPMS/LAKES REGION SCALE MODELERS PAGE 5 Show & Tell VE Day Photos & captions courtesy of Tom Reese Kevin Lehning: The King Tiger was a monster and Kevin s 1/16 scale captures its immense size quite well. He add the zimmerit coating and employed salt and hairspray to complete the weathering. Kevin has a 1/4 scale aluminum King Tiger in the planning stage. We re going to need a bigger table! Kevin Lehning: Kevin was able to get his hands on a studio scale resin casting of a Troop Transport from the movie Independence Day. Kevin used several hundred feet of fiber optics and LEDs to light the ship. It is mounted on a scratch built base. Dave Haas: Can you guess the scale? 1/144 of course. Both are Gashapon kits. The larger of the two is a ME-262 HGH III. This was a Luft 46 3 seat night fighter. The other is another Luft 46 aircraft the Heinkel P1078 a flying wing concept. Ned Ricks: Ned built the Hobbyboss 1/72 Hawker Tempest several years ago. The natural metal finish was done using Model Master chrome silver over gloss white and gloss black.
6 THE REPORTER THE OFFICIAL NEWSLET TER OF IPMS/LAKES REGION SCALE MODELERS PAGE 6 Show & Tell VE Day Photos & captions courtesy of Tom Reese Ron Thorne: Ronbo is always looking for unique or odd subject matter. One of his latest acquisitions meeting that criteria is this Skoda 42cm M1917 Heavy Siege Howitzer. This is a 1/35 scale kit from Takom. Mike Kellner: Another B-17 to count in his collection. This one an original 1/72 Revell B-17E kit. Mike s wife bought this for him 20 years ago. Mike says this is one of the worst B-17 kits but kept it with the goal of making it nicer than the same kit he built as a kid. He finished it in an experimental Pacific paint scheme using 1941 Studebaker Panama blue to match his references. James Binder: Speaking of unusual subjects James built Fly s 1/32 Focke Achgelis FA-330 Bachstelze. The FA-330 was a gyro glider towed behind U-boats and used for spotting targets over the horizon. James built the multimedia kit out of the box for a IPMS review. Ron Thorne: Another new kit in Ronbo s collection is another 1/35 Takom offering. This one a fork lift truck which can be built in multiple versions.
7 THE REPORTER THE OFFICIAL NEWSLET TER OF IPMS/LAKES REGION SCALE MODELERS PAGE 7 Show & Tell VE Day Photos & captions courtesy of Tom Reese Dennis Nordman: A first time visitor to the club Dennis displayed a scratch built Witches House. This is an actual home in Hollywood CA. It was designed by Hollywood art director Harry Oliver and was built in It was save from demolition by a Hollywood real estate agent who has renovated it. Dennis s model features a fully lighted interior. Phil Pignataro: This is the Spitfire MK14. This was the last version of the Spitfire and employed the same laminar flow wing design as the Mustang. Although this didn t add the anticipated performance it sure looks cool. Phil says the 1/72 AZ kit has the typical short run issues but looks nice when done. Phil also used Vallejo paint for the first time on this build. Phil Pignataro: Phil built the classic Matchbox 1/72 Boeing P-12E. Phil used wonder wire for the rigging and finished with decals from Model Alliance.
8 THE REPORTER THE OFFICIAL NEWSLET TER OF IPMS/LAKES REGION SCALE MODELERS PAGE 8 President s Message I have no hesitation when I say NIMCON 4 was an unqualified success. Over 200 people attended including 80 modelers who entered 262 models of which 157 took home an award. The quality of the models on the tables was better than ever. We had folks from Wisconsin, Iowa, and Michigan. Feedback from the vendors was also positive and there were lots of happy faces walking away from the raffle table. Our program to give away kits based on how much a person spent at the vendor tables was received quite well. Drama was at a minimum, so it was a fun day for all who were there. My thanks to those who sponsored trophies, donated kits, gave their time to plan the event, and worked at the show. A special thanks goes to AMPS Chicagoland who judged the armor entries. Well done. We plan to have NIMCON 5 next year and possibly a Regional Show in This month s meeting will feature demonstrations on using epoxy putty on your models and the theme for Show & Tell is to build something you wouldn t normally build I m attempting a ship; well, more of a boat, yikes! See you at the meeting. Phil Club Name Tags The Briefing Room By Tom Reese Modelers are a fairly intelligent group - they can usually give you specific details about the finer points of a P51-D Mustang, or describe the differences between a Panzerkampfwagen IV D and H versions. But we still forget names. How many times has this happened to you? You see a fellow modeler at a meeting who hasn't been there for a while. You remember the face, but not the name, and he looks at you the same way. You both need name tags! worn at all modeling functions, club meetings, model shows, the Nationals, etc. Proudly proclaim your membership in our club! Cost of the badge is $ Cash or a check to Don Norton. We will have an order form and orders will be taken at the June meeting and name tags will be delivered at July meeting. Club Shirts and Hats It s been a few years since we ve made shirts and hats available to the club. Stay tuned for details. We ll take a poll at this month s meeting to see how many folks are interested. The fine folks at Crystal Lake Engraving have a solution, beautiful blue plastic name tags, with the Lakes Region Scale Modelers name and logo, and your name and if you wish, your IPMS number, proudly displayed. Name tags are available with a pin back, or, if you prefer, a magnetic back to save wear and tear on your clothing. The badge will last forever, and can be
9 THE REPORTER THE OFFICIAL NEWSLET TER OF IPMS/LAKES REGION SCALE MODELERS PAGE 9 Reginald Denny - WW I Pilot, Movie Star, and Modeler By Jack Taylor Reginald Denny the Actor Any old-time movie fan will remember Reginald Denny, a supporting actor in over 60 movies of the 1920's, '30's, and '40's, such as "The Lost Patrol", "Captains of the Clouds", and "Cat Bellon". Born November 20, 1891, in Richmond Surrey, England, he became a stage actor in 1912, and toured the U.S., the Orient, and India. WW I was in full swing in 1917, while he was performing in New York. There, he joined the R.F.C. and sailed for England. He was posted to an airfield at Hastings in Kent where he completed pilot's training and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. On temporary assignment as a gunner, crewing on a Bristol Fighter F2b, his flight was on a night mission when they were mistakenly fired upon by English anti-aircraft guns and he received shrapnel wounds in his side. After recuperating in England, the war was over and he returned to the U.S. to continue his acting career and also to work as a movie stunt pilot. WW I Pilot In 1926, he bought and imported three war surplus Sopwith "Snipes", two of which flew in movies like "Wings" and "The Dawn Patrol". The third was put on display in the Los Angeles Museum until From there it laid idle at the Ontario, California Airport until the l 960's where it was restored to flying condition. It is now part of the Canadian Aviation & Space Museum's collection in Rockcliffe, Canada, near Ottawa. It is one of the only two "Snipes' in existence. The other belongs to the National Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Denny's Sopwith "Snipe'' E6938 Canada Aviation & Space Museum Being an aviation enthusiast, Reginald took an interest in radio-controlled model aircraft. This interest led him to open a very popular model shop in 1943 on Hollywood Blvd. The Modeler In 1938, he began producing a gasoline model aircraft engine called the "Dennymite". Perhaps some of our C&C members recall these engines. In 1940, Reginald and a partner won a U.S. Anny contract to manufacture engines for target drones that would be used for antiaircraft gunnery practice. They were designated the OQ-2 Radioplane. 15,000 drones of this type were supplied to U.S. Armed Forces in WW II. They were far superior to the previ-
10 THE REPORTER THE OFFICIAL NEWSLET TER OF IPMS/LAKES REGION SCALE MODELERS PAGE 10 ous method of AA practice using an actual airplane pulling a target sleeve, because the drone could be maneuvered off-course much as a real aircraft might do when taking evasive action. Your author personally watched these drones on Pe1eliu Island in They were large, with a wing span of over 12', were powered by 2-cylinder model engines, and were launched from portable ramps. In 1966, after over 50 years in show business, Reginald Denny retired. He died June 16, 1967 at the age of 75. WW I pilot, "Snipe" owner, movie and TV actor, model enthusiast, military drone maker. What a guy! OQ-2 Radioplane Drone As an interesting side note about these drones, the soon-to-be movie star, Marilyn Monroe, was discovered while working as an assembler at the Radioplane plant in While on that job, Anny publicist, Capt. Ronald Reagan (Yes, that Ronald Reagan!) photographed her and persuaded her to become a model. And that was the start of her career.
