But Robert Raver s demo at last month s meeting on sculpting with epoxy putty could certainly start us on our way! Epoxy putty is a two part clay like substance that when mixed together can be shaped or used as an adhesive filler that dries rock hard. There are a multitude of applications in modeling. Robert says these include; Scratch building items not included with the kit. Modifying figures. You can be a Michelangelo Building figures from scratch. As a filler for seams on models. There are several brands available such as Apoxie Sculpt, Milliput, and Magic Sculpt to name a few. Robert s personal favorite is Apoxie Sculpt. Robert says items that most of us could easily sculpt include bed rolls, tarps, and backpacks for armored vehicles and soldiers. Only a few basic tools are need to accomplish these. A small rolling pin, a steel rule, a razor blade, and a few by Tom Reese basic sculpting tools available at any craft or art supply store are all you need to get started. Oh, and the putty of course! A few tips from Robert when working with epoxy putty. Work on a hard surface such as a piece of tile or glass. Work with tools and fingers wetted with water. Robert showed us how to sculpt a simple bed roll. He started by kneading together equal parts of the two components until the putty was uniform in color. Working time for the putty varies but 15 minutes is about average before the putty becomes too hard to easily work. Once the putty was mixed Robert rolled it into a thin sheet using a rolling pin. And just like when rolling pie curst a little talc powder will help prevent the putting from sticking to the rolling pin. Once he had a thin sheet a steel rule was used to cut a small rectangle of putty. A razor blade helps lift off the tile or glass. Then it was a simple matter of rolling it up and using a sculpting tool to put indents in the bed roll where ties would be. And there you have it a scratch built bed roll. The major advantage of sculpting your

THE REPORTER THE OFFICIAL NEWSLET TER OF IPMS/LAKES REGION SCALE MODELERS PAGE 2 own part according to Robert is the ability to add items to models that are custom fit to lay on the model in a realistic manner. Figures are also prime candidates for modifying with epoxy putty. Figures in kits are rarely posed just the way you d like. Robert says no problem. If he wants to reposition a limb he ll cut off an arm for example. He ll insert a piece of wire into the figure and bend it to the position he wants the arm. The putty is then built up around the wire and the kit hand added to the other end. Big seams on models can be dealt with using epoxy putty as well. Simply roll the putty into a thin snake and press into the seam. Robert advises working with putty that is a little firm so it doesn't sink into the seam. The two parts before being mixed together and some of Robert s basic tools. Other things to know about working with this material. It can be sanded or filed. Robert recommends not using your best files as the putty quickly clogs files. A sharp hobby blade is excellent for scraping and shaping hardened putty. So there you have it in a nutshell. Give it a try on your next build. Thank again Robert! Robert points out items on his diorama to Chris Gibson that where made using epoxy putty. Bed rolls, tarps, back packs, figures, and stone work all made or modified using epoxy putty.

THE REPORTER THE OFFICIAL NEWSLET TER OF IPMS/LAKES REGION SCALE MODELERS PAGE 3 Show & Tell Outside the box - Build something outside your genre Photos & captions courtesy of Tom Reese Steve Jahnke: In the spirit of the theme Steve stepped slightly out of his comfort zone building a tracked vehicle instead on one on four wheels. He built the 1/35 Fujimi or was it Academy s Abrams main battle tank out of the box. Ron Thorne: This box scale Hawk U2 caught Ronbo s eye because it was produced the same year as he was! This is a WIP that Ronbo describes as a little scary with all the work required to bring up to today s standards. He plans to build one OOB and one with all the latest aftermarket goodies. Tom Reese: This was meant to be a quick and fun build and it pretty much was. I posed the 1/72 Ho-229 from Revell in flight. I couldn t bear to add those clunky leading gear! I took some artistic liberty finishing this one in a hypothetical ambush scheme. Tom Reese: This 1/48 Hasegawa Hawker Typhoon Mk 1B was one of Ken Macke s gently started kits. Ken gave me a great start having completed the cockpit and main wing assemblies. Built OOB it was an honor to finish what Ken started.

THE REPORTER THE OFFICIAL NEWSLET TER OF IPMS/LAKES REGION SCALE MODELERS PAGE 4 Show & Tell Outside the box - Build something outside your genre Photos & captions courtesy of Tom Reese Neil Butler: Neil also stepped outside the box showing off his 1 day build of Bandai s 1/12 scale Star Blazers AU-09 Analyzer. The snap tight construction and pre-colored parts helped Neil wrap this one up in a day. Neil Butler: Another unusual build for Neil is the 1/48 Aoshima Triton submarine. The kit even comes with a paper squid model! Don Norton: Don picked up this flat figure at the MMSI show several years ago. The French Grenadier is only the second flat figure Don s completed and I d say the results are pretty impressive. Don Norton: Don says he followed NASCAR for a period of time and built several models including Dale Jarrett s 88 car. The 1/24 Revell kit was pre-painted of out the box which threw Don a little curve ball. He s used to the nice and dirty armored vehicles and military figures!

THE REPORTER THE OFFICIAL NEWSLET TER OF IPMS/LAKES REGION SCALE MODELERS PAGE 5 Show & Tell Outside the box - Build something outside your genre Photos & captions courtesy of Tom Reese James Binder: Definitely in them was James s French submarine Surcouf. This is the one sub he s built during 20 years of modeling. The Surcouf was the largest sub until the Japanese introduced the I 400 class. Mike Binder: Mike likes to think that his Aurora Frankenstein Monster built in 1961 was James s inspiration to take up the hobby. Incredibly Frankenstein has survived four moves! Art Giovannoni: Definitely doesn t have wings! Art built Revell s 1/196 U.S.S. Constitution in memory of his son John ( ). John asked Art to build him a ship several years ago and Art wanted to fulfill that wish. He painted it as it appears today. Clark Farrell: Clark was happy to complete this 1/48 P-47 Razorback. The Tamiya kit was on his bench for 3 years. During that time it endured many mishaps but survived. Tough, just like the real thing!

THE REPORTER THE OFFICIAL NEWSLET TER OF IPMS/LAKES REGION SCALE MODELERS PAGE 6 Show & Tell Outside the box - Build something outside your genre Photos & captions courtesy of Tom Reese Ned Ricks: Watching Jimmy Stewart s biography on TV Ned was surprised to learn the Jimmy Stewart who was a private pilot before being drafted into the USAAF was initially rejected because he was under weight. Ned finished Warrior s 200mm figure with Humbrol enamels and artists oil paints. He posed it with a cover from Life Magazine showing Captain Jimmy Stewart upon his return from WW II in Ned Ricks: This 1/72 UH-34D Choctaw by Hobbyboss is the only helicopter in Ned s collection so it was in keeping with the theme. He built this OOB except for trading the JSDF decals included in the kit for USAF markings. William Wallace: This was Revell s interpretation of the B-2 Spirit before the actual aircraft was revealed to the public. Goanna need some more shelf space for this one!

THE REPORTER THE OFFICIAL NEWSLET TER OF IPMS/LAKES REGION SCALE MODELERS PAGE 7 Show & Tell Outside the box - Build something outside your genre Photos & captions courtesy of Tom Reese Mike Kellner: Mike built this pair based on a photo given to him by James Binders. The aircraft on the left is Culver target drone. Mike modified the C-45 to be a drone controller based on the photo. The Culver is Airmodel s 1/72 kit and the C-45 Encore s 1/72 kit. Mike Marchese: Mike s been doing a lot of restoration projects lately. On the left is an 64 Ford Starliner and on the right a 60 Buick hard top. Mike has had to scrounge quite a few parts to complete the Buick restoration. Chris Gibson: Chris needed a break from HK s big B-17 and all the associated photo etch parts. So AMT s 1/48 A-20 Havoc was just what the doctor ordered. Chris says it is a simple but good kit. Can t wait to see this one all painted up!

THE REPORTER THE OFFICIAL NEWSLET TER OF IPMS/LAKES REGION SCALE MODELERS PAGE 8 Show & Tell Outside the box - Build something outside your genre Photos & captions courtesy of Tom Reese Phil Pignataro: Phil is steadily adding to his 1/72 armor collection. The latest addition is the German Dingo 1 which is in the same class with our Hummer. Phil weathered the Dragon kit with oils and pastels. Mike Kellner: Way out of the realm of what Mike usually builds is this 1/25 AMT 70 Impala which Mike is converting to a Caprice that he once owned. Five years in the making perhaps we ll see this one finished on the same Thursday as his Desert Rat! Phil Pignataro: Our president set the example stepping way outside the box with Revell s 1/144 Harbor Tug Fairplay. This is the first ship Phil s built since he was a kid and he is finding that even a out of the box build isn t as easy as he imagined.

THE REPORTER THE OFFICIAL NEWSLET TER OF IPMS/LAKES REGION SCALE MODELERS PAGE 9 Once again we ve had an opportunity to learn more about our hobby from one of our own. Thanks, Robert for putting on a very informative and useful demo on using epoxy putty. I m going to try some as a filler on my next model. Our monsoon summer is flying by and it seems as if I m spending an inordinate amount of time mowing grass. I ve still managed to spend time on the model bench and finished a couple of kits even one I started back in the 80s. I encourage you to do the same and get a model completed this summer. I ve put in about an hour almost every day of concentrated effort to get these projects completed. It s a matter of priorities, but you ll be surprised how much you can accomplish in an hour. Hint - I m pushing for a large number of models at our Holiday Party next January. Speaking of contests, best of luck to those Lakes members who will be entering their works in the IPMS Nationals. Finally, we ll have the LRSM shirts and hats everyone ordered. Please pay for them promptly with the exact change or a check. I m looking forward to seeing all those WW I models at the Show & Tell. Phil President s Message The Briefing Room By Tom Reese Club Roster It s been awhile since we ve sent an official club roster out to all of our members. If there is any information that you do not wish to have published please John Graham or Tom Reese by July 31st. Our addresses are on the last page of this newsletter. Newsletter articles needed! I don t know how else to say it so I ll just say it. The cupboards are bare. I ve exhausted the stash of articles that have been submitted over the last few months (very few). I need your help to make this newsletter relevant to all of our members. Our demos and show and tells at monthly meetings are great but please share your talent in the newsletter as well. Thanks in advance for you support.
