1. READ FIRST WARNING Do not insert fingers, pens, wires and other objects into the equipment. This can result in injury, electric shock, fi re and/or damage. Draw power to the equipment directly from an electrical outlet. Do not share or piggyback the source outlet. This can result in fi re. Do not tamper with the power cord. This can result in fi re and/or electric shock. Do not place heavy objects on the power cord. This can damage the cord, resulting in fi re and/or electric shock. Do not bundle the power cord during use. This can result in fi re and/or damage from overheating. Unbundle the cord before use. Do not plug the power cord in or out with wet hands. This can result in electric shock. Do not operate the equipment with wet hands or when wearing wet clothing. This can result in electric shock. Do not cover, drape or otherwise leave the equipment underneath paper or cloth while it is plugged into an electrical outlet. This can result in fi re and/or damage. Hold the power cord by the plug, and not the cord itself, when unplugging from the electrical outlet. Tugging on the cord can damage it, resulting in fi re and/or electric shock. Do not insert or allow the grounding wire of the power cord to contact the electrical outlet. This can result in fi re and/or electric shock. Keep water, chemicals and other liquids away from the equipment. If liquids penetrate the equipment, immediately unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet and contact the place of purchase for servicing. Using the equipment while wet on the inside can result in damage, fi re and/or electric shock. Do not use the equipment when in anything but proper working condition. Using the equipment while emitting smoke, strange noises or odors can result in fi re and/or electric shock. Immediately unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet and contact the place of purchase for servicing. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet before cleaning the equipment. 17 3. PUNCHING HOLES IN PAPER AND BINDING WITH RINGS 3 PUNCHING HOLES IN PAPER AND BINDING WITH RINGS Binding with rings This section explains how to punch holes in paper and bind the sheets with the rings. IMP The Binding Finisher cannot punch holes in or bind with rings paper that is thicker than 216 g/m 2. Holes can be punched and sheets bound with rings only along the long side of A4 and LT paper. Bound documents are stacked in the tray with the ringed binding positioned to open to the left and downward when paper feeding on the printer connected to the Binding Finisher is set to forward and downward. TIP Documents are bound to a max. thickness of 5.5 mm when using rings for 50 sheets and a max. thickness of 11 mm with the rings for 100 sheets. Binding beyond these thicknesses stops in progress, leaving the remaining paper in the equipment. In such case, remove the paper still inside the equipment. The documents bound with the rings are ejected into the stacker tray. The stacker tray can hold up to 16 documents when bound with the rings for 50 sheets and up to 11 documents when using the rings for 100 sheets. Max. number of sheets that can be bound with the rings Rings for 50 sheets Rings for 100 sheets Plain paper Thick paper Plain paper Thick paper 50 sheets 16 sheets 100 sheets 33 sheets * The figures above are for plain paper of 80 g/m 2 or less in thickness, and thick paper of 216 g/ m 2 or less. Retrieve the documents. Push the stacker tray back into place. TIP Check that the equipment has stopped moving before pulling out the stacker tray. Be careful not to catch rings on surrounding parts when retrieving the documents. Documents may come undone when retrieving them from the stacker tray. 30
5. MAINTENANCE AND HANDLING 5 MAINTENANCE AND HANDLING Installation and relocation The following precautions regard equipment installation and relocation. IMP The Binding Finisher cannot be used in countries of differing power supply specifications. Max Co., Ltd. does not provide maintenance service for equipment relocated to other countries. Safety codes (electric waves, materials, etc.) vary from country to country. Transporting this product and consumables to foreign countries in violation of these codes may be subject to punishment. Relocation The following precautions regard equipment relocation. IMP CAUTION Entrust equipment lifting, transport and relocation to another floor in the building, etc., to a contracted service provider. Toppling over or falling can result in injury and/or damage. Transport and relocation should be handled by a service engineer, not the user. Entrust relocation to a service provider. Relocation is subject to billing. Installation conditions Installation location CAUTION Do not install the equipment in dusty or humid places. This can cause fire and/or electric shock. Do not install the equipment on shaky tables, inclined surfaces or anywhere it would be unstable. Toppling over or falling can result in injury and/or damage. Adequately ventilate poorly ventilated rooms or small rooms when the equipment is used continuously for a long period of time or when printing large quantities of materials. 31
5. MAINTENANCE AND HANDLING Installing the equipment in an inappropriate location can prevent the equipment from working properly and can cause trouble. Cold dry or hot damp places Where directly exposed to sunlight Near to heaters, air conditioners or humidifiers Where subjected to strong vibrations Poorly ventilated places Dusty places Near to oil-burning heaters or equipment that releases ammonia Unstable floors Install the equipment on a flat level surface. Install the equipment on a sturdy floor that can support the equipment s weight. Required installation space Install the equipment so that it has sufficient clearance from walls and objects around it. This space is needed for service engineers to access and service the equipment. 300mm or more BACK (860mm) DOWN UP 900mm or more FRONT Ensure the below installation space when the Binding Finisher is the unit farthest downstream. 30mm or more UP 32
5. MAINTENANCE AND HANDLING Power supply The following precautions regard the power supply of the Binding Finisher. WARNING Plug the power cord directly and firmly into an electrical outlet. Use only power supplies of the indicated voltage and frequency. Also, do not share or piggyback the source outlet. This can result in fire and/or electric shock. Do not use extension cords. Do not damage, bundle or remodel the power cord. Also, setting heavy objects on top of the cord, and pulling and bending the cord unreasonably can damage the cord, resulting in fire and/or electric shock. Contact between the power plug blades and metal can result in fire and/or electric shock. Do not plug the power cord in or out with wet hands. This can result in electric shock. Locate the equipment as close as possible to an electrical outlet that makes it easy to unplug the power cord in the event of trouble. If the power cord is damaged or internal wires are exposed or broken, contact the place of purchase for a replacement. Using a damaged power cord can result in fire and/or electric shock. CAUTION Hold the power cord by the plug, and not the cord itself, when unplugging from the electrical outlet. Tugging on the cord can damage it, resulting in fire and/or electric shock. For safety s sake, unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet before holidays and other long periods of disuse. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet before cleaning the equipment. 33
5. MAINTENANCE AND HANDLING Cleaning the Binding Finisher IMP Do not clean the equipment with chemicals such as cleaners, or organic solvents such as thinner and benzene. Substances of the sort can infiltrate through gaps in the equipment, and dissolve plastic parts and cause other damage. Entrust internal cleaning to a service engineer. How to clean the outer shell Wipe with a dry soft piece of cloth. For stubborn dirt, moisten the cloth with water, wring well and wipe again. If dirt cannot be removed with water, wipe with a neutral detergent, then wipe with water and then wipe dry. Cleaning the power plug This section explains how to clean the power plug. CAUTION Once or more times a year, unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet and clean the blades and surrounding area. Dust buildup can result in fire. IMP Set the power switch of the equipment in the "OFF" position before unplugging the power cord. Ground the equipment without fail after cleaning the power plug. How to clean the power plug Remove dust with a dry piece of cloth. MB-1000C-NA MB-1000C-EU 34
