You ll never have to oil any part of your wheel. Heel-Toe Double Treadles that are wide and comfortable Folds quickly for transport. Lightweight and comfortable to carry with the handcarved handle. Your wheel comes with a tool kit that includes the following spare parts and tools: 1 Main Drive Band, 1 Secondary Drive Band, 2 Plying Rod Caps, 1 Footman Push Cap, 2 Plying Tension Springs, 1 Main Tension Spring, tension cord (fish line), 1/8 Hex Wrench Specifications Height: 35 Weight: 15 lbs. Folded Dimensions: 25 x12 x15 Orifice Height: 30 Orifice Diameter: Mini 1/4, Standard 5/16, Jumbo 3/8 Optional Accessories 3 Ply Lazy Kate Mini Bobbin and Mini Flyer (for even easier treadling at 24:1)

PARTS OF THE WHEEL: FUNCTION, CARE, INSTRUCTION Iron Ring The machined iron ring that surrounds the wooden wheel has a black phosphate finish that is maintenance free. The ring creates an efficient placement of weight for smooth treadling. Because of the weight of the ring it will take a little longer for the wheel to slow down. Don t force the slowing down by touching the flyer. Let it naturally come to a stop. Drive Bands Your wheel has 1 large Main Drive Band, and 1 smaller Secondary Drive Band. Releasing the drive bands after use will prolong their life. Your tool kit has spare drive bands to replace the originals if they get worn. To remove the Main Drive Band and replace it with a new one you need to release the Footman. To do this, simply pull the footman push cap off where the footman connects to the Rocker Arm. You can now install the new drive band. Reconnect the footman to the rocker arm and put the push cap back on (not too tightly so it can be easily removed at another time). Flyers Your Folding Golding comes with a Standard Flyer and a Jumbo Plying Flyer. The flyers are very easy to remove and put on as needed. Place the Flyer (after the bobbin is on) onto the flyer shaft so that there is a 1/8 space from the bobbin (bearing) and flyer. Then use the Flyer Knob located on top of the flyer to tighten the flyer into position. Do not over tighten. Just a gentle twist of the flyer knob and the flyer is on or off. Caution: All the flyers are dual plane dynamically balanced. Even the hooks on the flyer are rotated into position to achieve balance. You can turn the hooks slightly to position them if needed, but do not turn them 1 full revolution. Doing so can offset balance. The flyer shaft is made of hardened steel and has been adjusted to approximately.001 inch of straightness. Any heavy jarring of the shaft could bring it out of alignment. (An optional accessory is a Mini Flyer that when used along with a Mini Bobbin makes for even easier treadling at 24:1). Tension Knobs There are 2 tension knobs on your wheel. The Main Tension Knob controls how quickly the spun fiber will be drawn into the machine. Turn it toward you to loosen the tension and away from you to tighten the tension. The Plying Tension Knob allows you to adjust the tension on the bobbins when using the Built-in Lazy Kate. Turning the knob to the right tightens the tension on both bobbins and turning it to the left loosens the tension on both bobbins. Tension Cord For tension cord your wheel uses 30 lb woven fish line. We have found this to be an attractive and effective tensioning cord. This cord should last for years without needing replacement, but if it ever does, there is spare cord in the tool kit.

BOBBINS Your wheel comes with 2 Standard Size Bobbins and 1 Jumbo Plying Bobbin. The standard size bobbin holds 4 oz. of fiber and jumbo plying bobbin holds 8 oz. of fiber. Because of their precision fit the bobbins require a little more effort to slide and position onto the shaft. A precision fit bobbin reduces vibration. The standard and jumbo bobbins are designed with sensitive tensioning for those spinners who like more control over the tension, especially when spinning or plying finer yarns. If you look at one of your bobbins (standard or jumbo) you will notice that the sides look different from one another. Tension cord goes into groove here Side A Regular Tension Side B Sensitive Tension Side A can be used for all your spinning, creating all weights of yarn from fine to bulky. However, spinning or plying with the sensitive side of the bobbin (Side B), will make it easier to make tension adjustments in very small increments while having greater play of the tension knob. Simply speaking, this nice feature means less fussing with the tension knob! (A Mini Bobbin that holds 2 oz. of fiber is available as an optional accessory. Used along with a Mini Flyer they provide even easier treadling at 24:1).

LAZY KATE ROD The Plying Rod is a metal rod that goes through the center post of the wheel. Your wheel comes with it already installed and ready to use for plying. It will hold a bobbin, one on each side, from which spun singles can be plied. It can also be used to store your bobbins until they are ready to use for spinning or plying. The Plying Rod is removable. If you wish to remove it and later reinstall it, follow the directions below. (Notice that the Plying Rod has a tightening knob. To slide the rod out from the post turn the knob counterclockwise. To hold the rod in place turn the knob clockwise). Installing the Plying Rod ROD STOPPER TENSION CORD LONG END SHORT END 1. The rod can be inserted from either side of the post. Holding the short end of the rod slide it through the post in front of the plying tension cords until the rod stopper hits the post. If the rod doesn t go through the post completely just turn the tightening knob counterclockwise and it will slide right in. TIGHTENING KNOB POST Rod cap TENSION CORD BOBBIN TIGHTENING KNOB TENSION CORD Rod cap ROD Rod STOPPER 2. Turn the tightening knob clockwise to hold the rod in place. Rod caps can be put on to hold the bobbins in place until you are ready to ply.

Ratios Your wheel features an accelerator pulley that allows you to spin at slow to very fast speeds. There are 6 easy to change ratios ranging from 6:1 to 24:1. The diagrams show you where to place the drive bands to spin at your desired speed. The Secondary Drive Band is placed first, then the Main Drive Band. Ratios 6:1 10:1 18:1 Ratios 8:1 13:1 24:1 DRIVE PULLY 6:1 10:1 18:1 DRIVE PULLY 8:1 13:1 24:1 SECONDARY DRIVE BAND SECONDARY DRIVE BAND ACCELERATOR PULLEY ACCELERATOR PULLEY MAIN DRIVE BAND MAIN DRIVE BAND Tip 6:1-8:1 You can easily go back and forth from 6:1 and 8:1 by simply moving the Main Drive Band up or down one v-groove. Secondary Drive Band stays the same. 10:1-13:1 Do the same as for above. 18:1-24:1 Do the same as for above. Tip How to move the Secondary Drive Band onto the Accelerator Pulley 1. Place the drive band around the desired v-groove on the Drive Pulley. 2. Then place the other side of the drive band on the edge of the corresponding v-groove on the Accelerator Pulley. Rotate the Accelerator Pulley while guiding the drive band on.

HOW TO USE THE BUILT-IN LAZY KATE The Built-in Lazy Kate allows you to 2-ply directly on the wheel. It is comprised of a Plying Rod, a Plying Loop, and a Plying Tension Knob that controls 2 tension springs. Follow these steps for 2-Plying on your wheel JUMBO FLYER JUMBO BOBBIN leader YARN ORIFICE plying TENSION SPRING plying TENSION CORD MAIN TENSION KNOB TENSION CORD FULL BOBBIN Rod cap Rod cap TENSION KNOB 1. Position the Jumbo Bobbin and Jumbo Flyer onto the steel shaft. Attach a leader yarn (as a loop) to the Jumbo Bobbin and thread it through the orifice. Set the ratio (speed) you desire for plying. 2. Pull the rod caps off the Plying Rod and slide a full bobbin onto each end of the plying rod. To hold the bobbins in place push the rod caps back on. Position each plying tension cord to lie in the groove of its respective bobbin. 3. Turn the Plying Tension Knob to adjust the tension on the bobbins. (It controls the tension on both bobbins simultaneously). You ll want a fairly loose tension so the single yarns will draw easily.

leader YARN 4. Draw the single yarns from the bobbins down toward the Plying Loop located between the treadles. Thread the singles through the Plying Loop. Then draw the singles up and loop them through the leader yarn. plying LOOP 5. With the singles attached to the leader yarn you are now ready to ply. Draw the singles up with one hand and guide them into the flyer orifice with the other hand. Adjust the tension as needed on all the bobbins.

FOLDING INSTRUCTIONS Your Folding Golding wheel is lightweight at 15 pounds and can be comfortably carried from room to room without being folded. Follow the instructions to fold it for longer distance carrying, travel, and/or storage. To begin: In order to fold the wheel the flyer and bobbin do not need to be removed from the steel shaft. Bobbins on the Plying Rod can stay on. Do not release the Main Drive Band, but do release the Secondary Drive Band to hang freely behind the pulleys as shown. Step 1 A. Unscrew the Upper Lock Knob and remove it. (Although the photo shows the bobbin tension cord released it is not necessary that you release it, as it will naturally release when the top post is folded down). B. The top of the post will hinge down. Screw the Upper Lock Knob back on into the opposite side that it originally came out of. Tighten the knob securely. BOBBIN SECONDARY DRIVE BAND UPPER LOCK KNOB MAIN DRIVE BAND Step 2 A. Detach the Footman. To do this simply pull the black push cap off where the Footman connects to the Rocker Arm. FOOTMAN ROCKER ARM B. Slide the Footman off the Rocker Arm and replace the cap. The Footman will now be hanging from the wheel and will not interfere with folding. FOOTMAN PUSH CAP

Step 3 A. Unscrew the Lower Lock Knob and remove it. B. The main post will hinge down and rest on itself. Step 4 A. Screw the Lower Lock Knob back into the opposite side that it originally came out of. Tighten the knob securely. B. The wheel is now fully folded. For car travel place the wheel in car as shown. HANDLE C. For transporting by hand, rest the wheel on its side as shown.

Oiling With 18 custom sealed ball bearings and 2 self-lubricating ones, your wheel parts will never need oiling. In fact to do so could be damaging to the wheel. Floor Leveler Knobs Most floors are not perfectly level, especially in older houses. To steady your wheel you can adjust the floor leveler knobs. Wood Finish Dust as you would any piece of furniture. The finish on the wheel is very durable, but if it gets scratched it can easily be touched up. First, lightly hand sand the scratched area with 400 grit sandpaper, then apply a thin coat of oil based wipe-on polyurethane into the area. With a clean cloth wipe off all excess finish. Wheel Stability For wheel stability we advise spinning on a hard floor surface, not on a carpet or rug. HOW TO ADJUST THE WHEEL ALIGNMENT The rim of the wheel should maintain an equal distance to the frame for proper alignment. (A wheel that is out of alignment will be seen as wobbling).the best way to tell is by looking at the iron ring in relation to the frame of the wheel. If the distance varies noticeably as the wheel is spinning, adjust the wheel with the 1/8 hex wrench (included in tool kit) as follows: 1. Rotate the wheel so that the iron ring is farthest from the frame at the highest point on the wheel. Loosen only very slightly the top socket set screw(s). 2. Rotate the wheel so that the iron ring is closest to the frame at the highest point in the wheel. The socket set screw(s) on the upper part of the wheel should be very slightly tightened. CAUTION!! Only tighten the smallest amount (1/8 of a turn). Spin the wheel to see if the adjustment improves. 3. Repeat step 1 and step 2 until the wheel spins equidistant from the frame as the wheel rotates. REMEMBER, do NOT OVER TIGHTEN or OVER LOOSEN THE SOCKET SET SCREWS!! SMALL INCREMENTS ARE ALL THAT is NEEDED. Any questions call Seth at
