The reflectors are designed to direct the illumination on the ground with no stray light which translates into wasted energy. The result is more light with less energy consumption. AIA Continuing Education EDUCATION CONTINUING Light Pollution The Flex is designated as a full cutoff fixture which means there is no light emitted above 90 degrees horizontal. This insures no light is beamed into the sky which contributes to light pollution and wastes energy. Longevity We manufacture all our products to have a life span as long as the building or space they illuminate. The primary material used for both our luminaire and pole products is aluminum to resist corrosion and the need for maintenance. Aluminum will not need the periodic refinishing required of steel products that will eventually rust and corrode. All our internal parts and fasteners are made of aluminum or stainless steel. Our reflector enclosures are kept dust free and dry with the use of silicone gaskets to prevent light degradation from contaminants. Sustainability Our products are developed with recycling and resource management in mind. We recycle all incoming packaging materials. Our products are shipped in easy to recycle packaging materials. Our state of the art finishing system uses eco friendly cleansing and preparation chemicals that are harmless enough to send to the drain without further processing. Our powder coating process eliminates the release of volatile chemicals into the atmosphere. The Flex, like all AAL products is produced with renewable materials such as aluminum and stainless steel. 4 a new form of light Many current architectural designs emphatically separate individual building elements to form the solid mass we see. The Flex TM celebrates these visual gestures with a luminaire composed of functional components that form a complete entity. The Flex TM is configured with a reflector, ballast and post top module linked together by two stainless steel arm rails. 5 ARM The arm module is composed of two stainless steel struts that tie together the other components resulting in a stiff structural beam. LAMP MODULE A sealed lamp module contains a high efficiency full cut- off reflector system for lighting performance and control of glare. BALLAST MODULE Isolating the electrical devices from the lamp housing allow for cooler operating temperatures to extend component life. 8 Wide Angle Reflector Design The Flex s large aperture and wide angle reflector design results in superior lighting performance at lower mounting heights. The four reflector types provide full cutoff optics to eliminate up light and control glare. The larger reflector module and aperture increases the overall efficiency and lighting performance. The upper reflector ring directs light into the middle region of the distribution pattern resulting in smooth illumination of the ground. The lower reflector array consists of faceted panels to direct the light energy at higher angles to maximize pole spacing. FOUR LIGHT PATTERNS Four reflector distribution patterns are available for composing a complete site lighting layout. The reflector tray is rotatable on 90 degree increments to properly orient the light irregardless of the luminaire orientation. TYPE 2 WIDE TYPE 3 ASYMMETRIC TYPE 4 FORWARD THROW TYPE 5 SYMMETRIC High Pressure Sodium Metal Halide lamps offer good color rendering for pedestrian areas, landscapes, facade and retail applications. ED-17 HPS watt ED-18 HPS watt A high pressure sodium lamp has a yellow cast with less visual acuity than metal halide lamps and slightly higher operating efficiency. T6 CDM METAL HALIDE watt The high color rendering T6 lamp and G12 socket, insures poor quality lamps cannot be substituted when relamping. Perfect for applications where color rendering is important. ED-17 METAL HALIDE watt The ED-17 metal halide lamp is available in standard or ceramic metal halide (CDM) versions. SUPER METAL HALIDE watt The super metal halide lamps are designed specifically for horizontal orientation. 9 Lighting Performance Flex TM The Flex reflector system provides higher light levels with uniform illumination of the ground. WIDE APERTURE + LARGE REFLECTOR = BETTER PERFORMANCE The Flex s wide aperture reflector design provides more light farther out from the luminaire for uniform illumination. Typical cutoff fixtures suffer from high angle light drop off - dark areas between poles and overly bright areas under the fixture. 6 TO 1 AVERAGE/MINIMUM 10 TO 1 MINIMUM/MAXIMUM The even illumination of the Flex reflector system surpasses all IES design requirements for site lighting. The requirements insure uniform illumination, without bright pools of light surrounded by dark areas that can impair your night vision. the ratio of average to minimum illumination should be less than 6 to 1 the ratio of maximum to minimum illumination should be less than 10 to 1 The Flex s average to minimum ratio = 2.6:1 The Flex s maximum to minimum ratio = 8.5: Typical average to minimum ratio = 8:1 Typical maximum to minimum ratio = 25: The Flex provides even illumination on the ground with no dark areas between the luminaires Other typical fixtures will have dark areas between the luminaires as the light levels drop off considerably. 10 Arm Designs Every Flex is configured with an arm assembly. Pole mounted arms come in eight designs in single or twin configurations. Nine matching wall mounted arm designs complete the line. 11 Fixture + Arm Articulation Flex TM ADJUSTABLE ARM AND LUMINAIRE The two straight arm designs, pivot at the post top (or wall mounted housing). This allows two arm positions, 0 horizontal and 30, while keeping the fixture parallel to the ground. The lamp module, for both the straight and curved arms, can pivot up 15, 30, 45 and 60. This provides minimum illumination behind the pole or direct more light in front of the luminaire. Using the straight arm, the lamp module can be pointed up at 90 to illuminate facades or wash walls. 13 Wall Mounted Flex TM The Flex can be wall mounted to compliment the pole mounted versions. A cast aluminum ballast module mounts to the wall. A selection of eight arms match the pole versions with the addition of a very short straight arm. FH3 WVSS very short straight arm EASY INSTALLATION AND ACCESS The ballast housing bolts to the wall and is pre assembled to the fixture assembly. The electrical components are factory installed and wired on the access door. The door swings down and is removable for servicing. 15 Installation and Service Flex TM The Flex is shipped as a complete, prewired assembly for fast, accurate installation. Typical installation time, out of the box to attachment to the pole is 10 minutes. 1 Remove the Flex from the carton. All electrical connections are factory wired and tested. 2 Stretch out the lamp and post top module. Install the specified lamp. 3 Set arm to the specified angle orientation and tighten the bolts. 4 Slip the Flex over the pole and tighten the six set screws to secure and level the assembly. TOOL-LESS LAMP ACCESS The lamp is accessible by opening the hinged lens frame. To open, just press in two latch buttons. The ballast assembly is attached to the swing down door. 25 Specifications Flex TM LAMP MODULE The lamp housing shall be two piece die cast aluminum. The internal reflector module is sealed from the outer housing with a molded silicone gasket. Two push button latches release the hinged door that swings down to allow access to the lamp. The lamp module shall be attached to the arm module with four stainless steel bolts. The reflector module shall be composed of faceted, specular and semi specular anodized aluminum panels rigidly attached in an aluminum tray. The reflector tray shall be aluminum. The reflector shall be easily removed by loosening four screws and lifting it out the tray. The reflector tray shall be rotatable on 90 centers for orienting the light distribution. The reflectors shall meet ANSI-IES standards for full cutoff reflector systems. BALLAST MODULE The ballast housing shall be two piece die cast aluminum. The ballast door shall swing down for servicing by loosening two captive bolts. The door shall be removable by a lift and shift motion. The ballast shall be mounted on a prewired tray with a quick disconnect plug and removed by loosening two captive screws. HID ballasts are high power factor, rated for -40 F starting. Electronic ballasts for metal halide lamps are sound rated A. Sockets are medium base for ED-17 lamps, G12 for use with T6 lamps, mogul base for ED-18 high pressure sodium lamps and position oriented (POMB) sockets for 250 (M58, ED28) and 400 (M59, ED28) watt metal halide lamps. Pulse start lamps, 250 (M138, ED28) or 400 (M135, ED28) watt metal halide shall use a mogul base with the optional pulse start ballast. All sockets are pulse rated porcelain. Ballasts are multi-tap, wired at the factory for 277 volts. ARM MODULE The arm module shall consist of two stainless steel rails that attach to the lamp module, ballast module and post top (or wall mounted) module. The cables between modules shall be sheathed in a flexible stainless steel hose with stainless steel fittings. The extended post arms shall have a cast post extension and top cap with two stainless steel tubes. The tubes shall be field trimmed to fit straight arms that are pivoted up 30. INSTALLATION & MOUNTING The Flex shall be factory supplied as a complete, prewired assembly including the lamp module, ballast, arm and post top (or wall mounted). The post top shall slip over a 4 /100mm or 5 /125mm open top pole and be secured with six stainless steel set screws. The set screws are also used to level the assembly on the pole. FINISH Fixture finish consists of a five stage pretreatment regimen with a polymer primer sealer, oven dry off and top coated with a thermoset super TGIC polyester powder coat finish. The finish shall meet the AAMA performance specification which includes passing a 3000 hour salt spray test for corrosion resistance. CERTIFICATION The fixture shall be listed with ETL for outdoor, wet location use, UL1598 and Canadian CSA Std. C22.2 NO.250. IP=65. WARRANTY Fixture shall be warranted for three years.
