11 Chapter 1 Pump Structure RIGOL Chapter 1 Pump Structure The contents of this chapter are as follows: Rear Panel Power Connection Fluid Path Internal Structure Rear Panel The rear panel contains the power socket (including two fuses), axial fan (used to release the heat inside the chassis), interface board interface (option) and main control board interface (as shown in Figure 1-1). Figure 1-1 Rear Panel View Power Connection Use the power cord supplied by RIGOL to connect the instrument to the main power source. For minimum interference effects, all components of the L-3000 system should be connected to the same mains output. Fluid Path As shown in Figure 1-2 (take L-3220 for example), two different mobile phases are transported to pump A and pump B respectively after being degassed. The degassed mobile phases flow into the primary pump heads through the inlet check valve and L-3200 Series Pump Service Guide 1-1

12 RIGOL Chapter 1 Pump Structure then are transmitted into the secondary pump heads through the outlet check valve driven by the motor (which rotates the primary cam and enables the plungers to do reciprocating motions); When both pump heads complete the aspiration and drain, the mobile phase are transmitted into the pressure sensor which can detect system pressure, feedback pressure compensation information and execute pressure protection. The mobile phase then runs into the pulse damper which inhibits pressure pulsation. The mixing ratio of mobile phases can be adjusted by setting the flow rates of pump A and pump B. After that, the mixed mobile phase enters the exhaust valve by which air bubbles can be removes when it is opened. At last the mobile phase flows into the in-line filter, from which the possible particle matter can be removed from the mobile phase; then the filtered mobile phase is used as the carrier to transmit the sample from the sampler into the column. 23 Chapter 3 Debug RIGOL Flow Rate Correction Operation steps: Prepare the flow meter (or measuring cylinder) and PEEK tubing. Use the flow rate correction coefficient principle, use water as mobile phase and add back pressure on PEEK tubing (within 6Mpa (870PSI) and 10Mpa (1450PSI)). 1. Prepare well-degassed HPLC grade water; connect one end of the PEEK backpressure tubing to the pump outlet and the other end to the flow meter or measuring cylinder. 2. Check the solvent compression coefficient in the 泵校正 (pump correction) interface. If the 查询压缩系数 ( inquire compression coefficient) is not 46 (the compression coefficient of water), set it to 46. Figure 3-7 Pump Correction Interface 3. Check whether the 用户校正系数 (user correction coefficient) is 10. If not, set it to Set the flow rate to 1ml/min. Correct the flow rate when the pressure reading is stable. 5. Flow rate correction should be done after pressure pulsation rejection calibration. Set the flow rate to 1ml/min. Record the measured flow rates and calculate the average. Note that the correction coefficient hold 4 places after the decimal point. New Correction Coefficient=Setting Flow Rate/Measured Average Flow Rate*Old Correction Coefficient For example, set the flow rate to 1ml/min. If the average flow rate is L-3200 Series Pump Service Guide 3-5

24 RIGOL Chapter 3 Debug 0.983mL/min and the old correction coefficient is , the new correction coefficient=1/0.983 *1.0102= Input in 小流速校正系数 (small flow rate correction coefficient, click 小流速校正系数, then set a new flow rate and run the pump. 6. Repeat step 5 until the flow rate meets the test requirements. Flow rate output error: ±0.5%, Flow rate stability: 0.1%. 7. Validation: set the flow rate to 0.5 ml/min and click 初始流速 (initial flow rate). Observe and record the actual flow rate. The flow rate output error should be ±1% and the flow rate stability be 0.2%. 8. According to the above method, set the flow rate to 2 ml/min to correct the correction coefficient in 中流速校正系数 (middle flow rate correction coefficient), and set the flow rate to 3 ml/min to correct the correction coefficient in 大流速校正系数 (large flow rate correction coefficient). Calculate the corresponding calibration coefficient and set the parameter according to the formula. The flow rate output error should be ±1% and the flow rate stability be 0.1%. Test 6 times for every flow rate, and respectively use formula (1) and formula (2) to calculate the flow rate output error and flow rate stability. Fm Fs S S = 100% (1) Fs F max F min S R = 100% (2) F m In the equation: S S Flow rate output error %; S R Flow rate stability %; F m actual flow rate (ml/min); F m the average of 6 measurement values under the same set flow rate (ml/min); F S the set flow rate (ml/min); F max maximum value of 6 measurement values under the same set flow rate (ml/min); F min minimum value of 6 measurement values under the same set flow rate (ml/min). 3-6 L-3200 Series Pump Service Guide
