2 Welcome Welcome to the brand new edition of the 0 Bay Window catalogue. We have been busy all year looking to see where we can make new benefits and improvements for our customers here at JK, undertaking a full product review and testing our products in our newly fitted JK workshop. We have also concentrated on lowering prices where possible and sourcing new products. The best news for you as a JK customer is that we are now able to offer free delivery for all orders over and no extra charges for large oversize parcels such as bumpers or panels. This applies to Mainland UK only, but equates to a great saving for you! To give you an example, when we used to charge you for delivery on oversize parcels, a front panel would have cost an additional! As I have said, we are constantly adding new products to our range, but if you feel there is something specific should offer which we currently do not stock, please feel free to let us know. Brief model history Aug Saw the Bay window model replace the Split screen. It was a radical rethink with changes such as ball joint front suspension, rather than king and link pin. IRS rear end instead of reduction boxes and swing-arms, a one piece windscreen, wind down cab windows. Engines were fitted with a back bar to stabilise the engine. Infact just about every body panel and mechanical part is changed. New front axle, fuel tank is now hidden behind a bulk head, door handles are changed. 0 Minor changes took place such as the fuse box, otherwise an uneventful year. > saw the introduction of front disc brakes and new rear brakes. Also the introduction of the small stud wheels with flat hubcaps. Bodywork changes included flared front and rear wheel arches. Tall rear lights, with reverse lights as an optional extra. This year also saw the introduction of the.l flat Type style engine with twin carbs. There were some vehicles with early style arches and disc brakes. A few of the late vehicles have high front indicators and on front panels but still have the wrap around style front and rear bumpers. Group buying JK are now offering Group Buying. The front indicators were moved up to the new grille. Changes were also made to the front arches and cab floor, accelerator linkage, steering box and so many other improvements such as the 00cc engine. Front brakes were again upgraded. Main changes were improved gear linkage, the indicators and wash wipe switches were upgraded, along with the sliding door and lock. Only big change was the cab doors are a one year only style. The heating system relies on the air arriving at the front warm and in a decent enough volume. The main problem is that the pipework from front to rear is made from many pieces and over the years the various parts move/ rust away and each joint leaks a bit of warm air. When the piping was new it was insulated to keep the warmth in, often this insulation is now missing and the pipes require re insulating. The air for the heater is also the air that cools the engine, so every joint and pipe needs checking from fanhousing to dashboard. The other main problem is that pattern heat exchangers do not have as many fins inside, the fins are the aluminium area inside the heat exchanger that the air is blown over and that transfers the heat from the exhaust pipe to the air. heat exchangers are becoming harder to find, so snap them up when you see them. You should also make sure the heater cables are functioning correctly, otherwise the flaps on the heat exchangers will not open and no heat will come down the pipes you have just repaired. Drain, or better remove the fuel tank and store it well away if you are cutting or welding nearby. After draining fuel, clean any spills and make sure the area is well ventilated (Its the fuel vapour that burns) Make sure you remove any flammable materials like interior cupboards, seats, carpets or sound insulation and remove any easily damaged items if you are cutting or welding. If you are unable to view both sides of the area that you are welding, have a second person with an extinguisher fire watching from the other side. Speaking from experience In the early days when Just Kampers was a VW workshop, I remember welding up a camper for an MOT. I had finished welding one side and had used seam sealer to make it water tight. The lid was left off the tin... and I started work on the other side. A spark went into the tin of seam sealer, and being petrol based it went up like a Roman Candle and set fire to the seam sealer I had just put on. Removing old body panels The panels that make up a classic VW are often spot welded together, so to replace them, the neatest way is to unpick the original spot welds. How to find the spot welds. As long as the panels has not been repaired before and the original spot welds lost, try the following. Rub a 0 grit piece of sand paper along the edge that has the spot welds (for example along the bottom edge of the outer sill). As the paint comes off you will see dimples with the original paint still showing in them. These are the spot welds. You will not easily remove them with a normal drill bit. So use a spot weld drill bit (Just Beetles Part No. J) and going at a slow speed drill through the top layer of metal (the panel you want to remove). Continue this on all the visible spot welds. To break the last bit of each spot weld, carefully split the two panels apart using a thin metal chisel. Any areas that need cutting (because you cannot get to the original spot welds) use as thin a cutting disc as possible in an angle grinder. If you have access to air tools such as air chisels and air saws, it is important that you practice on some scrap metal, as they can cause a lot of damage quickly if you are not sure how to use them. Think before you cut! Always think about what you are doing. Offer up the new panel, mark it with a sharp scriber, make sure you are happy with the size and fit. If you cut too much away, you are just making more work for yourself. Panels such as rear corners and rear wheel arches are worth spending extra time offering them up and rechecking before you cut.
