3 1.0 General 1.01 The 3M brand Reenterable Encapsulated PST Dome Closure is used for existing above-ground splices contained within a pedestal or below-ground splices within a hand-hole. 2.0 Kit Contents 2.01 The 3M brand Reenterable Encapsulated PST Dome Closure Kit contents are as follows: Closure Assembly (A) Dome Base (B) O-ring (A) Latch (G) PST (B) Ground Wires (C) Sheath Scuff (D) Plastic Mesh (E) Plastic Bag (F) (D) Gel Endseal Core (G) (F) Gel Sealing Strip (H) 2.02 Additional Materials Required: Vinyl Tape Rubber Tape Shield Bond Connectors 3M brand E-Z Wrap or equivalent Reenterable Encapsulating Compound Cable Ties, 18" (458 mm) (H) All components must be installed per instructions to be effective. 4 4.0 Cable Preparation 4.01 Remove sheath and scuff both cables. Remove Sheath 15" (381 mm) Scuff Both Cables 6" (151 mm) 5.0 Bonding and Grounding 5.01 Install bonding connectors per your company practice. Bonds should be placed so that the studs of the connectors are facing forward Install external ground wires to bonding connector studs and run along the cables Insulate bonding connectors by wrapping with rubber tape. 4
5 6.0 Splicing 6.01 Splice per your company practice Splice in tail of a terminal block or drop wires when required. 7.0 Sealing Collar Installation 7.01 Cut and remove packaging from gel end seal core Slit gel end seal ports along the length of plugs for desired number of cables to be installed and remove plugs. Use plugs 1 and 2 for main cables and plug 3 for branch or terminal cable. A fourth plug is available on 4606 and 4608 end seals for branch cables Install gel end seal core 2" (51 mm) below the sheath opening. Pull lips of seal, created by cutting and removing plug, around cables. Wrap the gel sealing strip around the core and ground wires. A gel sealant strip is used with the 4608 End Seal. Place ground wires and drop wires between layers in gel. Insure wires have one layer of gel between them and cable sheath. There should be at least 0.25" (6 mm) between wires. 5
6 7.04 Squeeze gel end seal to insure a seal between the layers and cables. Verify that closure assembly will rest on end seal when placed over the splice. Move end seal upward if necessary. 8.0 Closure Installation In order to fit 600 pair cable in the 4608, it may be necessary to pull the cables together with tape or cable ties Wrap plastic mesh snugly around splice bundle. Secure mesh at the top and bottom with cable ties. Make sure bundle will fit inside closure by placing the closure beside the splice bundle and positioning along the top of the end seal Slide the plastic sleeve over plastic mesh. Place plastic sleeve partially within the last layer of the gel end seal strip by peeling back one layer and repositioning it over the end of the plastic sleeve. 6
7 8.03 Starting 4" (102 mm) below the sealing collar, tightly wrap E-Z Wrap around the cables and gel end seal collar. Continue with a loose wrapping above the sealing collar over the length of the plastic sleeve to the top of the plastic mesh. Pull E-Z Wrap just enough to pull bag down onto mesh Wrap four to five wraps of highly stretched 1-1/2" (38 mm) wide vinyl tape over the E-Z Wrap so that it butts up against the bottom edge of the sealing collar to prevent the downward movement of the gel end seal Mix the reenterable encapsulant compound following manufacturer's directions. Carefully follow safety, health and environmental information given on product label or the Material Safety Data Sheet for the Reenterable Encapsulating Compound being used. 7
8 8.06 a) Pour encapsulant into plastic bag to cover splice. Work any bubbles to the surface of the encapsulant. b) Fold and twist top of bag over and secure with vinyl tape. For forced encapsulation, see Section 9.0. c) Place closure over the encapsulated splice bundle with the base resting on the sealing collar Remove cardboard insert from the inside of PST. Pull core tail through the center of the PST until core is even with PST edge Slide PST over closure so that PST tail is pointed toward the top of the closure. The core tail MUST be unwound upward. Position PST bottom edge between the bottom of the wire form latch and the base's top rib. Optional method is to put closure over the splice bundle and position PST 2" (51 mm) below the gel end seal. While holding the PST and closure with one hand, unwind the core by pulling on the core tail with the other hand in an upward and outward COUNTERCLOCKWISE direction While holding the PST and closure with one hand, unwind the core by pulling on the core tail with the other hand in an upward and outward COUNTERCLOCKWISE direction until 0.5" (13 mm) of PST is shrunk onto the closure. 8
9 8.10 Push PST towards bottom of closure. This will invert the PST. Do not force the PST to slide on the closure during inversion Continue pushing PST downward while pulling the rest of the core material When PST is in place, remove the remaining core material from around the cable Pull outward on the wire form latch and the dome will rise from base To replace the closure dome, place dome onto the base. Close the wire form latch, insuring that it catches the protrusions on the dome. Wipe O-ring clean, if dirty, and relubricate. Cable grease is acceptable For pedestal closure applications, secure the closure to the pedestal, mount terminal block and connect ground wires according to system practice. For hand hole applications, secure wire form latch to closure dome with a cable tie. 9
10 9.0 Forced Encapsulation 9.01 Start at the bottom of the bundle and layer the E-Z Wrap up over the top and back down to the bottom. Shift the wrap around the bundle and go back up and over the bundle again. Secure the end of the E-Z Wrap with vinyl tape Starting at the bottom of the bundle, wrap five highly stretched layers of E-Z Wrap around the bundle. Secure the end of the E-Z Wrap with vinyl tape. For continuous compression of encapsulant, wrap splice bundle with one layer of half lapped rubber tape, starting at the top of the bundle. 10
11 10.0 Closure Reentry Reentry of closure is accomplished by pulling out and pushing down the wire form latch. The latch will lift the dome of the closure from the base as it is pulled Remove the E-Z Wrap from the plastic bag Carefully remove the tape from the top of the plastic bag. Roll the bag down from as much of the conductor bundle as is needed. Remove encapsulant from the top of the plastic mesh until cable tie is accessible. Cut the cable tie away from the plastic mesh. Remove encapsulant from as much of the conductor bundle as needed while pulling on plastic mesh. Dispose of all used encapsulant and materials according to company practice Complete all necessary repairs. If the plastic mesh is not reusable due to damage, trim a new plastic mesh as needed and place on splice bundle. Secure mesh at top and bottom with cable ties Reposition the used plastic mesh snugly onto splice bundle. Secure at the top with cable tie Reposition the plastic bag over the mesh and bundle assuring that the bag will cover the splice bundle and mesh. If the plastic bag is not reusable due to damage, place a new bag over splice bundle and existing bag. Tape bottom of new bag onto old bag Loosely wrap bag and plastic mesh with E-Z Wrap to bring the bag down to the size of the plastic mesh. Tape the end of the E-Z Wrap to hold it in place Mix the encapsulating compound following manufacturer's directions. Carefully follow health, safety and environmental information label on encapsulating compound being used or Material Safety Data Sheet. 11
12 10.09 Fill the bag to above the conductors with reenterable encapsulating compound. Work any air bubbles out of the encapsulant. New compound will fuse with old compound of same type Twist the top of the bag closed, fold it over and secure it with vinyl tape Replace the dome over the splice bundle and close the wire form latch. Make sure that the latch catches the protrusions on the dome to secure it to the base. Wipe O-ring clean, if dirty, and relubricate. Cable grease is acceptable. 12
13 11.0 Retrofit on PST Pedestal Encapsulated Splice Closures Cut PST from top to bottom and pull it away from the closure body and sealing collar Remove vinyl tape from butt of closure and slide closure off Remove E-Z Wrap, plastic bag and plastic mesh from as much of the conductor bundle as is needed. Dispose of used materials and encapsulant according to your company practice. 13
14 11.04 After completing repair, remove the packaging from the gel sealing strip. Wrap the sealing strip around the existing mastic collar. Place new dome closure on the seal If more than one wrap of gel is visible, trim the sealing strip and rewrap. Repeat until only one wrap of gel is visible If necessary, secure sealing strip by wrapping with 3/4" (19 mm) vinyl tape. Leave a complete ring of gel exposed Complete assembly as outlined in 8.01 through
