No.3 G.!. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS READ THIS FIRST BENDIX LOCKHEED STEELDRAUUC Be sure to read instructions on the brake system of your car before taking the brakes apart. Confusion and delay can be avoided by observing the position of shoes and springs. As various parts are removed arrange them on the floor, so you can replace them properly.... Proper and timely lubrication tend to eliminate rust, sticking rods or cables and tight clevis pins. Oil all connections thoroughly to avoid dragging brakes, hard pedal and unequalized brake adjustment. > On cable operated brakes loosen the cable and lubricate at both ends with a graphite grease or lubriplate #110. Then work cable back and forth in the conduit until it works freely. Old cables that streteh should be replaced. If conduifs have any cracks or noticeable signs of collapse, replace them. After all parts are removed clean them thoroughly to remove grea_~e, rust and foreign matter. - ~ Inspect brake drums and if they are scored ref ace them or install new --s drums. In relining brake shoes, the lining should be clamped to the shoes with c'c" clamps." This insures a tight fit and eliminates humps between rivetholes. Countersink two-thirds of the thickness of the lining, when using undrilled sets or roll lining.. It is necessary that the lining contact the brake drum over as large an area as possible. A few moments spent in fitting the lined brake shoes into the drum in which they operate, will save time later on and give better lining contact. Chalk the brake drum, then rub the lined brake shoe back and forth in the friction race. Then file down the lining where the chalk shows on the lining. Several such applications will soon give close to 100% lining to drum contact, which insures long wearing, safe, smooth acting brakes. Litho in USA APPLIES TO,H5, 220-A, 221-A, 234, 237, 286, 292-A, 292, 296-A, 1162, 1168, 2003, 2004-A, 2005, 2005-A, 2005-L, 2006, 2011, , 2025, 2027, 2034, 2035, 2038, 2039, 2040, 2045, 2046, 2047.
BENDIX TWO SHOE BRAKES (Single Anchor Type. Mechanical) Be sure all parts are lubricated. Front wheel bearings should be greased with fibre grease. Tighten Springs, "U" bolts and shackles. Install brake shoes, brake springs, drums and wheels. Where combination sets are used, _ the Woven lininq is applied to the Secondary shoe, Molded lining to the Primary shoe. Disconnect cables at cross shaft, pull through and lubricate. Loosen the anchor pin nut (A). "" Remove inspection cover in brake drum, insert.0ld" feeler gauge at secqndary shoe. Turn eccentric (C) in forward direction of wheel rotation until gauge binds. If gauge does not have a tight fit at anchor end and loose fit at star wheel end of secondary shoe, then change anchor (a) to accomplish this. (Some anchors are sliding and some eccentric type). 1) Take up on star wheel adjuster Right Front (b) by moving handle of adjusting spoon towards axle until wheels are locked. Take all slack out of cables. Back off adjuster (b) until wheels roll free. Equalize and road test. side. Back off star wheel adjustment on tight wheel if vehicle pulls to one
BENDIX TWO SHOE BRAKES (Double Anchor Type) Be sure all parts are lubricated. Grease front wheel bearings with fibre grease. Tighten springs, "u" bolts and shackles. Install brake shoes, brake springs, drum and wheel. Where combination lining set is used, install Woven lining on Secondary shoe and Molded lining on Primary shoe. Disconnect rods or cables at their adjustable end. Loosen lock nut (C), turn screw direction of forward rotation of wheel until wheel drags. Then back off to free wheel and tighten lock nut (C). Loosen anchor nuts at (A) and (B) until lock washer is free. Then turn Star wheel (E) until shoes are wedged tight in drum. With light hammer, tap anchor nuts- upward and outward. Then tighten Star wheel (E)-check with feeler gauge to insure clearances shown. Then tighten anchor lock nuts (A) and (B) with a long wrench. Replace rods or cables. Lock wheels with star wheel adjusters before taking slack out of cables On cable type remove slack by adjusting clevis yoke. On rod type adjust rods on rear brakes and allow 1/ 32" backlash in operating lever. Then insert clevis pin and cotter key. ~ 0]j:~.. ' "t"lt.ooe On front brakes set cam lever (J) to a vertical position in line with king pin. Then adjust rod, allowing 1/ 64" clearance between ball (1) and cam lever 0). insert clevis and cotter pin. This tends to prevent locking of brakes on turns. Back off star wheel (E) about 14 to 16 notches. Road test. Back off star wheel adjuster on tight wheel.
BENDIX HYDRAULIC BRAKES Disconnect parking brake cable at cross shaft and lubricate. Install brake shoes and brake springs. Where a combination lining set is used, apply the Woven lining to the Secondary shoe and Molded lining to Primary. Back off Star Wheel adjustment (E) and eccentric (A) on models previous to 1939 to allow drum to go on over shoes. Install drums and wheels. Loosen lock nut and. turn eccentric adjustment screw (A) in direction of forward rotation until wheel drags. Then turn screw back enough to release brake. Tighten lock nut as tightly as possible. Move handle of star wheel adjusting spoon towards axle until wheel drags, then back off until free. (Models later than 1938 have only star wheel adjuster. except 1942 Pontiac.) 6 BENDIX THREE SHOE BRAKES 1. Be sure all parts are lubricated. Front wheel bearings should be greased with fibre grease. 2. Tighten springs, "u" bolts and shackles.,. 3. Apply molded lining to the short shoes (Primary~-Auxiliary), woven lining to the long (Secondary) shoe in each wheel. 4. Install brake shoes and brake springs in prop~r place on <f~r. 5. Put drum and wheel on and tighten bearings to ex, snug fit. 6. Remove cam lever (K) from cam shaft at backing plate. 7. Loosen lock nut (A) and with a wrench applied to the cam shaft, turn screw (A) in direction wheel moves in forward motion until wheel drags. Then turn back screw enough to release wheel and tighten lock nut (A). 8. Loosen anchor lock nuts (B) one-half turn. With a wrench on cam shaft so brake can be aplied in usual manner spin wheel in forward direction, then apply brake with wrench. Repeat this a few times, finally holding brake on tight with wrench. Tap anchor nuts (B) tight. Be sure wrench is held tight during this operation. Then lock anchor nuts (B) tight. 9. Then re-adjust eccentric as outlined under No With pedal released, cam lever shaft (K) on rears should be back about 60 0 If this is not the case, loosen nut that holds shaft to cam!and shift lever to proper position. On the front cam levers should be 'positforr:j':a" so center of ball on operating lever,is 1/ 4 to 5/ 16" behind center lille,j.~ King pin. f:~-y 11. Turn eccentric on Secondary shoe in forward direction of wheel rotation until there is a drag, then back off until free. 12. Tighten nut (C) until wheel drags. Then back off until wheel is free on rears only. On fronts adjust button on end of operating lever rather than nut (C) on rod. (If fronts have Perrot control, then handle same as rears.) 13. Then depress brake pedal until wheels turn with a drag, but not locked. Hold in this position. All wheels must have some amount of drag. Adjust by loosening nut (C) if drag is too heavy on anyone wheel.
LOCKHEED HYDRAULIC BRAKES PLYMOUTH DODGE CHRYSLER DE SOTO. Etc. Before removing brake shoes fasten the ends of the hydraulic cylinder in each wheel assembly with string or wire to prevent pistons from falling out when shoes are removed. Grease front wheel bearings with a fibre grease. Tighten springs.. "11'''.bolts and shackles. ~ ' O. Install brake shoes and brake springs. Where combination lining set is used. the Woven lining is applied to or :.~::~. < ' the front (Forward) shoe in each wheel. o ".. o F.t\ltr~~ Back off eccentrics (I) by pushing,c.,s~ _ -,_ up on handle of wrench. If still unable to install drums turn anchor bolts (2) LEFT SIDE OF CAR until shoes have_ moved to farthest ~ FRONT point down and in. Install drums and adjust front wheel bearings by tightening snug. then back off "1 to 2 castellations. ( a) Adjust brakes by turning down on each eccentric until there ci heavy drag and back off until the wheel rolls free. If it is necessary to push up on handle of wrench more than V2" to wheels. then shoes probably need centralizing. (b) If no brake and drum gauge or brake lining grinder is available. proce~ to centralize shoes by step method as follows: Turn down on eccentric (1) until there is a heavy drag. then turn anchor bolt (2) until wl1eel rolls freer. Repeat these operations until there is no freeing of wheel drag when turning anchor. Rock anchor until point of free-est movement of wheel is found. Lock it and back off eccentric until wheel rolls free. Repeat for other shoe: Check fluid in reservoir. Spongy pedal is often due to air in system and it must be bled. When job is complete. kick pedal and back off further on any wheels that develop a drag.
STEELDRAULIC BRAKES Before starting on brakes see that springs, shackles and "U" bolts are tight. Lubricate all moving parts. Tires should be inflated to uniform pressure. Front wheel bearings should be greased with fibre grease. Install brake bands and brake springs on car. Front and rear bands can be interchanged, but bands from right side cannot be changed with bands from left side. To avoid trouble see that the flexible end of the band is on the forward side of the wheel. (See diagram.) Before drums are put on, adjust clearance between (A) and (B) to 1/ 16" by means of Rod and Cable adjustment. This clearance must be the same on all four wheels. On cars equipped with rods, turn with pliers (D) which will increase or decrease the clearance. On cable operated brakes turn lock nut (C) while holding (G) so cable will not twist, then turn rod to desired position. Then tighten lock nut (C). Install drums and wheels. Turn eccentric (F) in forward direction of wheel rotation until lining to drum clearance at rigid section of band is.020" to :015". Then apply brakes within 3 inches of floor board and have someone sit in the car and keep the brake pedal depressed to this point or use a block of wood to hold pedal depressed. Figure 2-Brake Rod Adjustment Turn Knurled nut (E) until front wheels have a heavy drag and rears a light drag. Then release pedal. All wheels should move freely. If not, back off (E). Test car on road. If car pulls to one side, turn nut (E) counter-clockwise one notch at a time on the tight wheel until all wheels are equal. NOTE: Where a combination lining set is used, install the woven lining on the rigid end of band and molded lining on the flexible end of band.
