3 2000 TRUCK POWERTRAINS Engines Calculating Revolutions Per Minute Many commercial customers want to know what the rpm of an engine will be at a given vehicle speed instantaneous rpm or engine speed. There s a mathematical formula that can make this calculation quick and easy. Here it is: Calculating Instantaneous Engine Speed wheel revolutions distance rpm = per mile X rear axle ratio X per unit of time X transmission ratio (revs/mile) (miles/minute) The one piece of this equation that may be new to you is wheel revolutions per mile. True, if you had a strong handle on calculating the circumference of a circle, you could figure it out, but Ford has made it easy the number is published in the Super Duty F section. It can be found on page 89 and shows the wheel revolutions per mile for the various tires offered on the Super Duty F Also, keep in mind that the distance per unit of time figure needs to be in miles per minute (simply divide the mph by 60). Let s say a customer was considering a Super Duty F-250 4x2 with the 6.8-liter V-10 engine, an automatic transmission and the 3.73 rear axle. This customer wanted to know what the rpm would be in Overdrive at 60 mph. In this case, the calculation would be performed as follows: Calculating Instantaneous Engine Speed wheel revolutions distance rpm = per mile rear axle ratio per unit of time transmission ratio X X X (revs/mile) (miles/minute) 655 (1) Performing the calculation reveals that the vehicle rpm would be approximately 1735 at 60 mph. (1) Based on standard Super Duty F-250 Goodyear tires. Revolutions per mile may vary depending upon specific tire manufacturer. 3

4 2000 TRUCK POWERTRAINS Engines cont d 2.5L SOHC 8V I-4 (Ranger) The 2.5L SOHC I-4 engine with sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection (SEFI) is standard with five-speed manual transmission on all Ranger 4x2s and available with four-speed automatic transmission on all 4x2 Regular Cabs. This engine offers a quiet, powerful performance while providing an economical balance between performance and fuel efficiency. It is optional on all Ranger XLT models. 6 2000 TRUCK POWERTRAINS Engines cont d 4.2L OHV 12V V-6 (F-150 and Econoline) This member of the F-150 and Econoline lineup combines quiet operation with responsive performance and load-handling power. Standard on F-150 and Econoline Van and Wagon models. Major features and benefits: The split-port induction (SPI) system uses an intake manifold with two runners per cylinder. These runners carry the air charge to the intake side of the combustion chamber. At lower engine speeds, the air charge is directed through a narrow pathway that squeezes the air through at a higher velocity, quickening engine response, optimizing fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. As engine speed increases above 3000 rpm, the second, wider air path is opened. The increased volume of air allowed by this second path works to further enhance engine power and operating efficiency Platinum-tipped spark plugs help provide sure-fire ignition and contribute to a 100,000-mile scheduled tune-up interval. This engine is manufactured for Ford by Cummins. Major features and benefits: Direct Injection fuel delivery has one fuel injector inside the combustion chamber of each cylinder. Major features and benefits: The SOHC V-8 features one camshaft in each cylinder head (at the top of each cylinder bank), eliminating the need for pushrods The SOHC design provides a fine level of valve control Deep-skirt engine block and low-friction internal components for reliability and fuel economy Silent-design chain cam drive contributes to durability and helps reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) Platinum-tipped spark plugs help provide surefire ignition and contribute to a 100,000-mile scheduled tune-up interval. GVWR. The engine is built for Ford by Navistar. Major features and benefits: Direct injection fuel delivery places one fuel injector inside the combustion chamber of each cylinder.
