3 Application Note: Metal Enclosure Introduction What You ll Need Thermal Characteristics Guidelines Applications If a metal enclosure is required, this document provides recommendations for enclosures that accommodate specific Metasys base frames and satisfy NEMA 1 or NEMA 12 conditions. It also includes instructions on installing the base frames and wire ducts into the enclosures. To complete this task, you will need a: large flat-bladed screwdriver drill (size bit for sheet metal screws) sheet metal screws second person If a heat exchanger is ordered (for a NEMA 12 enclosure), you will also need: a metal cutting saw with a 7/32 inch metal cutting bit The temperature environment within one foot of the box must not exceed 122 F (50 C). Do not install enclosures in close proximity to other devices that generate excessive heat, such as boilers, high voltage transformers, or windows producing solar heat radiation. Each metal enclosure substitutes for a specific Metasys enclosure. The metal substitutes are listed under Ordering NEMA 1 Enclosures and Ordering NEMA 12 Enclosures (at the end of this document). The size of each enclosure is reflected by its ordering number. If you intend to install a Network Cradle Kit in the metal enclosure for either the 2-slot or 5-slot base frame, order the enclosure recommended for a 5-slot application. Due to their sealed conditions, NEMA 12 style enclosures require a separately ordered heat exchanger. App. Notes: Network Units Metal Enclosure 3

4 Installation General Installation The base frames mount into the metal enclosures in the same general manner, regardless of base frame size or enclosure type. Illustrations and specifications for each base frame are shown on the pages following the general installation. 1. Mount the enclosure and subpanel, without the base frame, according to the manufacturer s instructions. 2. If the enclosure is a NEMA 12 type, install the heat exchanger according to the manufacturer s instructions. Refer to Figure 4.! CAUTION: Due to the required drilling and resulting loose fragments, if a heat exchanger is necessary, then install the heat exchanger before installing the base frame. 3. Position the base frame over the mounting holes provided on the subpanel. These mounting holes were positioned at the factory to accommodate specific base frame sizes. No drilling or measuring is required. Since an unloaded 1-slot weighs fourteen pounds, this step may require two people.! CAUTION: Do not position or install the base frame with any controller modules or power supplies plugged in. 4. Secure the base frame onto the subpanel of the enclosure with mounting bolts and lock washers. Note: Be careful not to overtorque the bolts. 5. Install the wire ducts to the subpanel with screws (e.g., sheet metal), leaving a one-fourth inch gap between the duct and the base frame. Refer to the base frame diagrams for correct positioning. 6. Terminate the wires to the base frame and install the modules according to each module s technical bulletin. 4 App. Notes: Network Units Metal Enclosure

5 1-Slot Enclosure and Base Frame Installation To install the 1-slot enclosure and base frame, follow the General Installation section instructions and apply the specific details listed in the table below and in Figure 1. 6 2-Slot Enclosure and Base Frame Installation To install the 2-slot enclosure and base frame, follow the General Installation section instructions and apply the specific details listed in the table below and in Figure 2. Figure 2 shows a 2-slot base frame inside the standard recommended enclosure. To install an NT cradle with the 2-slot base frame, order the larger A-48N3611 NEMA 1 enclosure (with an A48P36 Subpanel), or AL48H3612LP NEMA 12 enclosure (with an A48P36 Subpanel). Mount the base frame on either of the two sets of mounting holes provided on the A48P36 Subpanel. 8 5-Slot Enclosure and Base Frame Installation To install the 5-slot enclosure and base frame, follow the General Installation section instructions and apply the specific details listed in the table below and in Figure 3. The 5-slot base frame inside the standard recommended enclosure accommodates an NT cradle. 9 NEMA 12 Enclosure Heat Exchanger Position The recommended heat exchanger mounts on the top of the enclosures. (The same exchanger fits any of the specified enclosure sizes.) Refer to the installation instructions from the manufacturer.! CAUTION: Due to the required drilling and resulting loose fragments, if a heat exchanger is necessary, then install the heat exchanger before installing the base frame. The power cord for the recommended heat exchanger drops into the enclosure from the bottom of the exchanger. (See Figure 4.) To pull the cord out to a power outlet would require additional conduit fittings that maintain the NEMA 12 sealed conditions. The best method to supply power to the heat exchanger is via a separate outlet box inside the enclosure. If necessary, you may plug the heat exchanger into the power outlet provided on the base frame. App. Notes: Network Units Metal Enclosure 9

11 Ordering NEMA 1 Enclosures When ordering metal enclosures, request the subpanels modified for Johnson Controls, Inc. Order enclosures from: Steven W. Zamora Co Washington Road Kenosha, WI Attn.: Technical Sales (WI) FAX: Voice: (414) The 1-slot and 2-slot NEMA 1 style enclosures include a modified subpanel. The 5-slot NEMA 1 style enclosure requires a separately ordered subpanel. The enclosures require a specific, separately ordered, lock kit. If the metal enclosure is for a 1-slot application, order a Hoffman A-30N24C, with Lock Kit AL12B. If the metal enclosure is for a 2-slot application, order a Hoffman A-36N30C, with Lock Kit AL12B. If the metal enclosure is for a 5-slot application, order a Hoffman A-48N3611, with Lock Kit AL2A. Order a special subpanel for this enclosure, the A48P36 Subpanel. Ordering NEMA 12 Enclosures All NEMA 12 style enclosures require a separately ordered subpanel. Each subpanel is specific to an enclosure and is listed below with that enclosure. The enclosures also require a separately ordered lock kit (DL36 Lock for all NEMA 12 style enclosures). If the metal enclosure is for a 1-slot application, under NEMA 12 conditions, order a Hoffman AL30H2412LP with the modified A30P24 Subpanel. If the metal enclosure is for a 2-slot application, under NEMA 12 conditions, order a Hoffman AL36H3012LP with the modified A36P30 Subpanel. If the metal enclosure is for a 5-slot application, under NEMA 12 conditions, order a Hoffman AL48H3612LP with the modified A48P36 Subpanel. App. Notes: Network Units Metal Enclosure 11

12 Ordering Accessories Heat Exchanger Wire Duct Kits Base frames installed inside a NEMA 12 style enclosure also require a separately ordered heat exchanger. Order the exchanger from the Zamora Company (Hoffman XR Heat Exchanger). Each Wire Duct Kit contains two 21 3/4 inch ducts, one 15 3/4 inch duct, and one 9 inch duct.
