This control can be used with single phase permanent split capacitor and shaded pole motors that are approved by the motor and equipment manufacturer for speed control applications. By directly sensing pressure, this device electronically varies the speed of a fan motor. Controlling head pressure in the condensing section of a refrigeration system is a common application. 2 Product Overview The P66 is a pressure actuated electronic motor speed controller. By directly sensing pressure, this device electronically varies the voltage to a fan motor. This control provides direct response to changes in condenser pressure, regardless of the variations in air delivery curves. The P66 can be purchased with one or two pressure sensor inputs. In dual sensor models, the control selects the input with the greatest demand. The P66 is also available with a NEMA 3R (Rainproof) enclosure for outdoor applications. These models come with a plastic enclosure, appropriate gaskets and low voltage wire leads for 24 VAC power connection. Additionally, the critical high voltage components are encapsulated in potting compound. The combination of the above gives the P66 s electronics extra protection in adverse weather conditions. NEMA 1 models cannot be retrofitted in the field to obtain the NEMA 3R (Rainproof) rating. The P66 must be supplied with 24 VAC (1 VA) from an external transformer powered from the same phase as the motor circuit (See wiring diagrams). The low voltage input connections are 1/4 in. quick-connect terminals on the NEMA 1 models and two 6 in. 22 AWG wires on the NEMA 3R models. The line voltage connections are screw terminals. WARNING: Personal Injury Hazard. All Series P66 electronic fan speed controls are designed for use only as operating controls. Where an operating control failure would result in personal injury and/or loss of property, it is the responsibility of the installer to add devices (safety, limit controls) or systems (alarm, supervisory systems) that protect against, or warn of, control failure. WARNING: Personal Injury Hazard. The P66 control is for use only with non-corrosive and nonflammable refrigerants. Use with corrosive or flammable refrigerants may cause equipment damage or personal injury. Typical Application Typical applications include: computer room air conditioning commercial air conditioning commercial refrigeration This control is designed to replace On/Off fan cycling controls, multiple speed motors, condenser floodback systems, temperature fan speed controls, and modulating louver systems. The P66 controls may be used with motors that are approved by the manufacturer for speed control applications and meet the following requirements: Ball-bearing construction Service factor of 1.25 or greater Low heat rise Power factor of 0.7 or greater CAUTION: Equipment Damage Hazard. The P66 may be used only with single phase motors approved by the manufacturer for speed control applications. 2 P P66 Series Electronic Fan Speed Controls Product/Technical Bulletin

4 Operation Overview Condensing unit operation and installation determine the overall capability of maintaining a satisfactory pressure by means of fan speed control. Within the operating range, the P66 provides air delivery in direct proportion to heat rejection requirements. This allows the refrigeration system to perform efficiently in very low ambient temperatures. The P66 s pressure sensor(s) provide direct response to changes in condenser pressure, regardless of the variations in fan delivery curves. The dual pressure input control selects the pressure input with the highest pressure. See the chart below for a typical operational sequence for a P66. 97% 90% Motor Voltage 10% to 40% of Line (model specific) No fan operation in this pressure range. 0 psig Operating Range (i.e., 190/250 psig) Operating Range Plus 20 or 30 psi* Pressure Input 350 psig *20 psi for 30 psi Effective Throttling Range (ETR) 30 psi for 60 psi Effective Throttling Range (ETR) Figure 4: P66 Operation Chart Table 1: P66 Operation Pressure Input Pressure is between 0 psig and the low end of the operating range. Motor Voltage (VAC, true RMS) 0 to 5 volts Start voltage (10% to 40% of line - model specific) Motor voltage varies directly with system pressure from start voltage to 90% of line voltage. 5 M ounting Maintaining operating temperatures within the listed product ratings is necessary for reliable operation. The P66 control should be mounted with the cooling fins in a vertical position with no obstruction preventing air flow through the fins. Do not mount the P66 where the control is exposed to excessive heat. For maximum ambient temperature ratings, refer to the Electrical and Temperature Ratings table. For maximum heat dissipation, locate the P66 where fan air passes through the cooling fins. Locate the P66 so the pressure elements inside the base are above the liquid level of the equipment on which the control is being used. Capillary Mounting Guidelines Figure 5: Avoid Sharp Bends Mount the control where it can be conveniently wired to the power supply and the motor. Provide the recommended pressure connection in the high pressure vapor line near the condenser inlet. (A 60 in. capillary is standard.) Provide standard models with a Schrader valve depressor in the female flare fitting. Avoid sharp bends or kinks in the capillary tubing. Purge all tubing and lines before connecting the P66. Coil and secure the excess tubing to avoid vibration. Allow some slack in the capillary to avoid violin string vibration, which can cause the tubing to break. Do not allow the tubing to rub against metal surfaces where friction can damage the capillary. Figure 6: Allow Slack and Coil Excess Capillary CAUTION: Equipment Damage Hazard. The maximum overpressure of the P66 is 450 psig (3103 kpa). Figure 7: Secure the Capillary P P66 Series Electronic Fan Speed Controls Product/Technical Bulletin 5

6 W iring WARNING: Disconnect the power supply before the wiring connections are made to avoid possible electrical shock or damage to the equipment. Make all wiring connections using copper conductors only. All wiring must be in accordance with the National Electrical Code and local regulations. For maximum electrical rating of the control, see the P66 Electrical and Temperature Ratings table. CAUTION: The P66 must be grounded to a suitable earth ground. Figure 8: Permanent split-capacitor motor connections to the P66 Fan Speed Control. Note: The P66 is a single phase control that can only be used with single phase motors. The 24 volt control circuit and the motor must be on the same phase. 7 Adjustments The throttling range of the P66 is internally fixed and cannot be adjusted. However, the operating range can be increased or decreased within the controls pressure range. The pressure range is 80 to 200 psig (552 to 1379 kpa) for low pressure models and 140 to 350 psig (965 to 2413 kpa) for high pressure models. The operating range can be adjusted as follows: 1. Locate the adjustment screw on the P66 s pressure transducer. The screw can be accessed through the opening in the upper left-hand corner of the control s base (see Figure 11). (The second transducer, if supplied, is located in the lower righthand corner of the control s base.) 2. Turn the adjustment screw clockwise to increase or counterclockwise to decrease the operating range. Low Pressure Models (80 to 200 psig): 1 turn = approximately ± 17 psig (117 kpa) High Pressure Models (140 to 350 psig): 1 turn = approximately ± 35 psig (241 kpa) Figure 11: Operating Range Adjustment Screw Location Checkout Procedure Before leaving the installation, observe for correct operation. See the Operation Overview section for a typical operational sequence. CAUTION: Equipment Damage Hazard. Any adjustments should be limited to two full turns in either direction. Over-adjustments may prohibit modulation of the motor and/or cause high head pressures. All pressure adjustments should be verified with the use of refrigerant pressure gauges. All other adjustments made other than those described above will effect the operation and performance of the control and void any/all warranties.
