1 JIMS PERFORMANCE BILLET CLUTCH KIT Important Note: Before installing this new clutch thoroughly read complete instructions. Recommended tools for Big Twin clutch and primary work: JIMS No. 971 Clutch basket service tool JIMS No. 965 Starter ring gear rivet tool JIMS No Clutch spring compressor tool JIMS No. ( See catalog page 161 ) primary locking bar JIMS No. 944 Three ton screw or hydraulic press Retaining ring remover pliers H-D or Clymer Service Manual for appropriate year and model. Refer to service manuals for: All safety instructions Removal and installation instructions Proper Tools and pullers Torque and lubrication quantities and specifications No.8376 Shown No Use on 1990 to 1997 Big Twins No Use on 1998 to 2006 Big Twins, except 2006 Dyna s No Use on FXST, FL and present FXD. No Use on all 2011 to present Big Twins. Recommended Primary oil for JIMS Performance Clutch JIMS recommends a mineral base type primary clutch oil. Do not use any type of synthetic oils. Recommended primary oil is B&M Trick Shift ATF type F Recommended B&M Trick Shift oil quantity used are the same as OEM. See service manual. Warning! Always wear proper eye protection when removing or installing retaining rings. Slippage may propel the ring with enough force to cause eye injury. Use correct retaining ring pliers. Verify that the tips of the pliers are not excessively worn or damaged. Removing the existing Clutch Note: 1. Refer to service manual to protect against accidental shock or start up, first disconnect the battery ground cable, then the positive cable. 2. Remove primary drain plug, at bottom of primary cover, then drain lubricant into a suitable container. 3. Remove foot pegs, shifter lever, floorboard etc. 4. Remove inspection and derby cover screws from from the outer primary chain cover. 5. Remove all mounting screws and washers from primary cover. Remove primary cover. 6. Refer to your service manual to remove clutch basket and associated components using proper safety instructions, proper tools, and pullers. 7. Remove the small retaining ring that retains the hub to the clutch basket bearing using the proper retaining ring pliers. Always wear safety glasses while performing this service. See Fig 1 Fig.1 8. A hydraulic or screw arbor press is required to remove OEM clutch hub from the 1

2 clutch basket bearing and to install the new JIMS Billet Clutch hub. Use a press, JIMS tool No. 971 clutch basket service tool and its instructions to properly set up clutch basket in press. To remove the O.E.M. clutch hub firmly support the O.E.M. clutch basket as shown. See Fig 2. If you re missing your No.971 instruction sheet go to web site and see instruction sheet No.971-IS. Now use tool to remove the O.E.M. clutch hub from the basket as shown. See Fig 2 9. After pressing out the hub inspect the bearing for smoothness. If the bearing feels rough or binds, then it must be replaced. 10. If replacing clutch basket bearing first remove the big retaining ring as shown. See Fig Now remove the old bearing using JIMS tool No. 971 along with arbor press. See Fig Use the same tool to install the new bearing as shown. See Fig Using the press and JIMS tool No.971 install the new JIMS Billet Clutch hub into the O.E.M. clutch hub basket. Securely support the clutch basket under press ram using JIMS tool No. 971 hub installer driver. Follow instructions from service manual and tool instructions for proper installation. 14. Install a new retaining ring making sure the ring is correctly seated in the retaining ring groove. Now check the bearing for smoothness again. NOTE: On all wet clutches soak the friction plates 1-3 minutes in proper primary oil then wipe dry with a clean clouth and insert in the clutch basket. REMOVE Fig.2 Installing your JIMS Billet Performance Clutch 1. Using your service manual install the clutch basket into the inner primary case, with the primary chain and associated components. Install clutch hub nut using red thread lock on mainshaft. Tighten hub nut using the factory torque specs. of ft lbs. See Fig 7 2. Start plate installation by referring to the last page of these instructions and follow text installation instruction. See Fig 9 & parts list on page 4 & 5. Clutch Spring Pressure and recommended selection Springs lbs of spring pressure MT-7 gold springs (shipped assembled), 58 lbs ea. 348 Recommended for JIMS 120, or 131 street legal or smaller engines and normal to some aggressive riding. Use 3-MT-7 gold springs and 3-MT-23 green springs 420 Recommended for big engines and most aggressive riding Note: When using this combination you must alternate each size spring when installing Fig.3 REMOVE Fig.4 MT-23 green springs, 82 lbs ea. 492 Recommended for street racer type riding and big inch street engines MT-91 red springs, 100 lbs ea. 600 Recommended for race competition, 2

3 4. Install the pressure plate using (6) six MT-7 springs; (6) six spring cups; (6) six- 6mm SHCS with a small amount of lube applied to threads. 5. Use provided 5mm wrench to tighten and torque 6mm screws to 5 to 6 ft.lbs. (66-72 in lbs) 6. Adjust clutch as normal, using a center bolt adjuster. Refer to service manual for proper adjustment. See Fig 8 7. Check and adjust primary chain per service manual. Next re-install outer primary cover and pour the proper amount of ATF lubricant into the primary inspection cover opening. Use same amount of lube as service manual specifications.. 8. Using a new O-Ring, install clutch inspection cover in chain case cover. Install mounting screws per service manual. 9. Re-install shifter lever, foot pegs, floorboards, etc. 10. JIMS recommends changing primary lubricant after the first 500 miles and every 5,000 miles thereafter.
