4 1 General Complete steering gear system of ram type ("cylinder machine") including hydraulic power pack, cylinders, starter arrangement, indication system and synchronised follow-up or non-follow-up PLC based remote control system with alarm handling. The remote control system is designed as a standard system according to the fail-safe principle. The system is very user friendly, highly accurate, and advanced and flexible with many possibilities. Standard and custom designed solutions available. The complete system is especially suitable for fast ferries and smaller vessels. For other vessel types, e.g. larger vessels and/or rotary vane type steering gears, electronic remote control system and indication system are delivered. If required the starter arrangement may also be included. 1.1 Main features The standard systems are delivered for twin rudder installations, other configurations on request. They are type approved by Det Norske Veritas and delivered for approval of the other classification societies. Standard and custom designed solutions available. Control of: Rudder angle (choice of follow-up or non-follow-up control system). Remote start/stop of steering gear system. Indication: Rudder angle. Steering gear running. Alarms and monitoring. Interfaces (options): Autopilot. Voyage data recorder (VDR). Joystick- or DP-system. Additional rudder indicators. Special interfaces on request. Other features (optional and standard): Compact control panels and other units. Up to six control stations on bridge. Sensors for monitoring of all vital parameters (when complete system). Selectable rudder speed (high/low). Independent systems for each rudder when twin or multiple rudders. Split rudder function when twin or multiple rudders. Full synchronisation when twin or multiple rudders (angles independently adjustable). Custom designed solutions available on request. Independent electronic non-follow-up back-up system from bridge and manual back-up system locally on the steering gear. Most internal cables on the bridge and in the steering gear compartment are included for complete systems. Module built panels and control levers give full flexibility and simplify the installation. The electronic remote control system eliminates hydraulic tubes to bridge. offers a well-known and reliable solution based on quality components. The system is delivered from order lever to tiller. Please note that if the vessel is to be classified according to the HSC-code, it requires synchronised followup remote control system and VDR-interface. General Page 1

7 2 Basic configuration 2.1 Complete standard system Functions and possibilities listed in this section are always included. Note that alternatives exist, and it is necessary to check which are included. Functions and possibilities listed in the 'Options' section are available on request. Other functions and possibilities (i.e. tailor made solutions) can also be delivered. Note that all signal inputs into the control system shall be galvanically isolated from all other system(s). All signal outputs out from the system are galvanically isolated if not otherwise described. The basic configuration includes: Complete ram type steering gear system including: Synchronised follow-up or non-follow-up electronic remote control system. Indication system. Feedback unit for rudder angle. Starter arrangement. Hydraulic power pack. Cylinders. Tiller. Control of: Rudder angle. Up to seven control stations: Main panel bridge. Slave panel(s) bridge. Command transfer system (i.e. only one panel in command at any time). Others: Instrument for rudder angle. Independent electronic non-follow-up back-up system from bridge. Manual back-up system locally on the steering gear. Local control panel mounted in starter cabinet for complete setup of system and data logging. Technical information: Power supply hydraulic power pack: 220/230 or 380/400 VAC, 50Hz 3~. Power supply electronic remote control system: 2 x 24VDC. Rudder angle: Up to ±45. Rudder torque: Up to 9kNm, others on request. NB! The rudder torque and the tiller connection to the rudder stock must be specially checked! 2.2 Custom designed system The system is tailor made for the individual vessel. The delivery normally consists of electronic remote control system and indication system. If required the starter arrangement may also be included. Systems are delivered for many different makes of steering gears, including rotary vane types. Basic configuration Page 4

8 3 Options The system can be delivered tailor made to suit any application. Below are examples of options that can be included. 3.1 Interface to Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) Standard interface to VDR: Operation information: Rudder order. Rudder feedback. Control panel in command. Autopilot engaged. NFU back-up system engaged. NFU back-up system order (i.e. port/starboard). Alarms: Feedback failure. Oil filter. Indication power failure Phase failure. Overload. Oil level. Control power. Main power. Start indication (running). Stop indication. 3.2 Interface to autopilot Galvanic isolated ±10VDC or 4-20mA order signal from autopilot. The autopilot is engaged/disengaged by a push-button on the control panel, and a corresponding potential free output contact is given to the autopilot (configurable NO or NC). 3.3 Interface to joystick- or DP-system Interface to either joystick-system or DP-system can be delivered. Galvanic isolated ±10VDC or 4-20mA order signal and hand-shaking via potential free contacts (i.e. 'Call' and 'Ready' signals). 3.4 External instruments Interface for external instruments for rudder angle can be supplied. E.g. for: Panorama rudder indicators. Misc. analog gauges. E.g. 96x96mm, 144x144mm etc. Analog or serial NMEA 0183 (IEC ) interface to other systems. 3.5 Miscellaneous Example of other options that can be delivered: Custom designed manoeuvre panels and steering wheels, e.g. IP56 protection in front. Misc. alternatives to the hydraulic power pack, e.g. pump directly connected to the main engine. Special operating modes. Special interfaces. Options Page 5

9 4 Control panels 4.1 Bridge panels The drawings show the standard control panels. Standard rudder control panel to the left and emergency control panel (NFU) to the right: Alarm and indication panel: 4.2 Local control panel Local control panel mounted in the starter-cabinet door or separately (e.g. in the engine control room desk, optional). Control and monitoring/indication of the included functions from 4,3" touch screen. The panel also gives access to parameters for system set-up and adjustment and possibility for data logging. Benefits include easier service and monitoring of the system and historic data via data logging for easier fault finding and tracing of "what happened". Control panels Page 6
