2 GENERAL ERAB FEED WATER REGULATOR is intended for continuous regulation of the water level in marine auxiliary boilers. The constant level regulator regulates an electric motor operated valve. The regulator is equipped with adjustable ID-functions in order to achieve good regulation. It is designed on the principle of direct measurement of the water level, by conductivity methods, and consists of 2 electrodes in combination with electronic amplifiers and an electronic motor operated straight valve. It is equipped with electronic delays, and with compensators to eliminate variations in the main supply voltage and the conductivity of the water. The insulating material is Teflon. The electrodes are mounted on the flange. The electrode stand is to be mounted direct in the steam drum. The electrodes are adapted for 2 levels, one for "valve opening level" and one for "valve shutting level". We recommend a difference between the electrodes of about 15 mm. AMPLIFIER BOX (REGULATOR) The amplifier box is of plug-in type and consists of the electronic top part and the terminal base part. The amplifier box consists of 2 amplifiers, electronic time delays, relays, signal lamps and test buttons. The ID-functions are to be adjusted by the knobs. The amplifiers are compensated for variations in the main supply and for variations in the conductivity of the water. The constant level regulator regulates an electric operated motor valve. The regulator is in balance when the level is between the electrodes. When the level is sinking or, rising actuates the motor valve. By adjusting the ID-function knobs on the regulator, a good regulation of the feed water flow is achieved. Functional test can be carried out by depressing "open (test ), resp. shutting (test ) knobs. 2

3 FEED WATER REGULATING VALVE The motor shall be a reversing 1-phase 230V 50/60 Hz motor, with a travel speed of about 60 sec. The straight trough valve shall have an equal percentage flow characteristic, that the feed water flow will be proportional to the valve opening. A pressure drop at about 1 bar under normal conditions is to be recommended. The capacity of the valve is defined as the quantity of the water in cubic meter in hour (m³/h) flowing through the fully opened valve with a pressure drop of 1 bar. Check the max. pressure drop (Dp) dependent of the motor torque. MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS ELECTRODE STAND The electrode stand is to be mounted direct in the steam drum. Check that the electrodes have correct length; the difference shall be about 15 mm. They can be shortened or lengthened. Check that the copper gasket seal correctly. A gasket may be used only once. The threads of the electrode (M l4 x 1.25 mm) shall be greased with Molycote. The electrode cable shall be laid in a coil, so the electrode stand can be lifted. AMPLIFIER BOX The amplifier box (the regulator) is to be mounted in a convenient place, so that harmful heating and vibrations are minimized. Max ambient temp: +60 C FEED WATER REGULATING VALVE Before mounting, clean the pipelines to avoid damage on the valve plug from scale, welding sparks etc. We recommend a filter in the pipeline before the valve. The electric motor operated valve can be mounted in any position. We recommend that the motor shall be mounted at a higher level than the valve. The motor and the actuator shall be accessible for inspection. Max temp. of feed water: +120 C -40 bar +240 C -32 bar Max ambient temp: Motor +55 C WIRING INSTRUCTIONS The feed water regulator EVM is to be connected according to wiring diagram EVM-600A Make all connections securely and re-check the earth connection. By attacking the cable to the electrodes, the red marked terminal shall be held securely with a pair of poly-grip tongs. The motor shall be a reversing 1-phase, 230V 50/60 Hz motor with a speed of the valve travel of about 60 sec. ELECTRIC WIRES Electrode cable: Other cables: Heat resistant (e.g. silicon cable) Standard quality MAINTENANCE STARTING INSTRUCTIONS Before starting, check the level in the boiler. After that, switch on the main supply. Check that the level, even by high load, does not fluctuate too much. REGULATOR ADJUSTMENT The regulator regulates the level by regulating the electric motor-operated straight trough valve. By adjusting the ID-functions on the regulator, a good regulation of the feed water flow is achieved. When the level change, opens resp. shuts the motor valve by signals, after an adjustable time delay (delay 1,5-5 S). The first signal, the so called D-function, is adjustable (pulse 3-20 S). If the level, after this first signal, still differs from the "normal level", continuous the motor valve it s opening or shutting by signals. These signals, the so-called I-function, delays the motor valves travel time between 2-6 times (Ifunct.x2-x6). To compensate for over regulation, the regulator gives, when the 'normal level is reached, an adjustable reverse signal (t-funct.0-10 S). Recommended adjustment at start All the knobs in the middle position By steady load of the boiler, the regulator will stand in a balance position. By any change of the load, the regulator, very rapidly stops at a new balance position. Functional test can be carried out by depressing "test " (opening) resp. "test " (shutting) knobs. FUNCTIONAL TEST Change the load of the boiler that the regulator regulates the feed water flow. 4

5 REGULATOR IN BALANCE The regulator is in balance when the level is between the "valve open and "valve shut" electrodes. No regulation impulses are actuated when the regulator is in balance. OPEN-REGULATION When the level is sinking under the valve open electrode, actuates after the adjusted "delay-time", a valve open signal which length is the pulse time. After this signal, actuates valve open signals and intervals. so that the motor valves travel time is delayed according to adjusted I funct. When the level reached to normal level, actuates a shutting signal in accordance to adjusted "t funct". SHUTTING-REGULATION When the level reached the valve shut electrode, actuates valve shut signals, with equal signal series as above, but with the reverse travel direction. ELECTRODE TEST Check the insulation of the electrodes by a voltmeter (range 0-60V 50/60 HZ), measure between the electrode and the flange. When the water level rises up to the electrode 0-5V When the water level is under the electrode 15-25V MOTORVALVE ADJUSTMENT Speed travel adjustment The speed of the valve travel of the valve V4S AV33W2 is adjustable between 40 sec. and 120 sec. We recommend a speed of about 45 sec. Unfasten the hex-nut 19 on the link arm 14 on the valve linkages. ln the left position of the arm 14, the valve speed is about 40 sec., in the right position about 120 sec. NOTE! The limit switch 12 is to be adjusted. Turn the knob AUT-MAN in position MAN, and actuate the valve with the crank. Check that the limit switches breaks, short after the spindle is reaching the max. resp. min. limit. NOTE! The link arm 13, is also an overload protection, and breaks off, if the limit switches are wrongly adjusted. FLOW, CAPACITY ADJUSTMENT The flow capacity can be adjusted. Adjust the travel (max.14 mm) by turning the knob AUT-MAN in position MAN and actuate the valve with the crank. Adjust the limit switch for opening (12), so that the limit switch breaks at the right travel position. NOTE! If the valve has to high capacity, the regulating system will operate as an on-off regulator. 5

6 PERIODICAL MAINTENANCE After a period of rest, test the units before starting the boiler. Test weekly: Amplifier box test Feed water regulator Test monthly: Functional test Feed water regulator Test yearly: Functional test Feed water regulator Inspect the electrodes TROUBLE SHOOTING GENERAL This section provides information that enables an efficient trouble shooting in event of equipment failure. Before trouble shooting the equipment, study the rest of this instruction in order to become familiar with the principles of operation. We have not attempted to give a complete detailed instruction for finding the cause of all possible troubles. This guide will rather give a check schedule that leads the fastest way to detect the most probable cause of the actual trouble. For faultfinding, a voltmeter (ranges 230V AC-60V DC-30V DC) is needed. Before troubleshooting, check all connections to the terminals. They must be correctly laid and screwed. LEVEL DISTURBANCES If high-, or low level alarm is actuated, or if the water regulator does not regulate properly, control that: a) the boil water has no impurity b) the boil water has correctly salt- and PH-value c) there is no oil in the boil water d) the electrodes have the correct length e) the feed water pump has the right capacity FEED WATER REGULATOR EVM Fault indication Make following checks Remarks Feed Water Regulator Main supply 230V 50/60 Hz Terminal 1-2 does not regulate Regulating signal 230V 50/60 Hz Terminal 3-4 and 3-5 Test the valve open funct.
