Customer Notification Letter CAMPAIGN NOTICE Suzuki Motor Corporation has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2003 Grand Vitara XL-7 vehicles. The engine wiring harness may be subject to chafing by being routed near the intake manifold. If the engine wiring harness is chafed, a short to ground may occur and the ignition fuse could blow causing the vehicle to turn off unexpectedly. The vehicle s power steering and braking systems would be affected if this happens which could lead to loss of control of the vehicle. Some 2003 Grand Vitara XL-7 (JA627) vehicles are affected. Suzuki Canada Inc. is requesting that Suzuki dealers apply additional insulation and a protection bracket to the engine wiring harness on each affected vehicle before delivery to a new owner. Suzuki Canada Inc. is also requesting that Suzuki dealers apply additional insulation and a protection bracket to the engine wiring harness on all affected retail registered vehicles at no cost to the customer for parts or labour and regardless of time and mileage limits. Registered owner s of affected vehicles will be sent an Owner Notification Letter, a copy of which is included with this bulletin. However, in order to expedite the repair, contact your affected customers and request that they return their 2003 Grand Vitara XL-7 (JA627) vehicle to your dealership to have this Safety Recall Campaign completed. Affected Vehicles 2003 Grand Vitara XL-7 (JA627) within the following range: JS3TX92V ~ JS3TX92VX

2 PARTS INFORMATION You will automatically be shipped sufficient quantities of Engine harness bracket sets to begin repairing affected vehicles immediately. Each Engine harness bracket set includes one engine harness protection bracket, one butyl rubber sheet and one EN campaign sticker. More Engine harness bracket sets may be ordered according to the parts information below. Description Part Number Quantity Order Type Engine harness bracket set Regular or VOR REPAIR PROCEDURE 1) Record all radio station presets. 2) Disconnect the negative battery cable. 3) Disconnect and remove the canister purge valve. 4) Disconnect the MAP sensor. 2

3 5) On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect the throttle kick-down cable assembly and move it out of the way. 6) Remove retaining bolts (6 mm thread) from clamps A, B and C. Remove retaining clip. 7) Pull engine harness up and out from behind intake manifold. 3

4 8) Remove the tape wrap from the two protectors. 9) Place the two protectors at the middle of the butyl rubber sheet, leaving a small space between each protector. 10) Fold the butyl rubber sheet over the two protectors, pinching the sheet between the protectors. 4

5 11) Roll the butyl rubber sheet around the two protectors and rotate the protectors to the back side of the engine harness. 12) Wrap the harness and two connectors with black electrical tape. 13) Install the engine harness protection bracket between engine harness clamp A and the intake manifold. 5

6 14) Confirm that the harness is positioned as illustrated. 15) Install clamps B andh C and the retaining clip. Connect MAP sensor and canister purge valve, making sure to attach the ground eyelet to the retaining bolt. Reinstall the throttle kick-down cable on automatic transmission equipped vehicles. 16) Attach negative battery cable and start vehicle. Warm up the vehicle and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Remove the negative battery cable and touch it to the positive battery cable to re-learn TP sensor settings. Re-attach negative battery cable. Set radio station presets and clock. 17) Install the EN campaign sticker to the radiator core support above the left headlamp. 6

7 WARRANTY CLAIM PROCEDURE Claims for this campaign should be submitted on a copy of the attached Campaign Multi-Claim Form. Print page 8 of this bulletin and follow the procedure described below. ❶ Enter your dealer code. ❷ Enter your dealer name. ❸ Enter the repair order number. ❹ Enter the vehicle identification number (VIN). ❺ Enter the odometer reading. ❻ Enter the repair date. ❼ Leave the V/C code box blank. ❽ Attach a copy of each Repair Order to the Campaign Multi-Claim Form. The Repair Order must detail the owner s complete name, address including postal code, VIN and mileage. ❾ Submit each Campaign Multi-Claim Form to SCI within 21 days of the oldest repair regardless of the number of individual claims on the form. Clams submitted with either incomplete information or missing Repair Order copies will be returned to your dealership for correction prior to processing. WARRANTY CLAIM REIMBURSEMENT For each affected vehicle that you inspect, your parts account will be reimbursed dealer net plus 30% for parts and 0.6 hours labour at your current warranty labour rate. CUSTOMER SATISFACTION Please be sure that all dealership personnel are familiar with all procedures related to this Campaign. Only your conscientious action at the dealership level can lead to a successful Campaign conclusion. Remind your staff to be sympathetic and sensitive to your customers feelings. Please extend Suzuki s apologies for any inconvenience this service may cause them. We apologize for any inconvenience this Campaign may cause you or your customers. Suzuki Motor Corporation has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists on certain 2003 Grand Vitara XL-7 sport utility vehicles. According to our records, you own one of the vehicles affected by this recall. The ignition wire harness in affected vehicles is routed under the intake manifold. In some affected vehicles, the wiring harness can rub against the intake manifold during vehicle operation and abrasion damage to the wire harness can occur. Damage to the wiring harness can cause a short in the ignition which can cause the ignition fuse to blow and the engine to stop running. This can result in loss of control of the vehicle and a crash could occur without prior warning. Your Suzuki dealer will repair any wiring harness damage on your vehicle and will add additional insulation and a protector plate to prevent the wiring harness from becoming damaged. The service will be performed at no cost to you for parts or labour. Please contact your Suzuki dealer as soon as possible to schedule an appointment for this Important Safety Recall. Recall instructions have already been sent to your dealer and the recall can be completed in about 45 minutes if you have an appointment. Additional time may be required to schedule and process your vehicle. If your dealer has a large number of vehicles awaiting service, this additional time may be significant. If you no longer own this vehicle, please complete the enclosed postage paid reply card and return it to us.
