1 Service Bulletin Circolare tecnica - Technisches Rundschreiben - Circulaire Technique - Circular Tecnica S.A.T. 86 MV area n Date: 24 June 2010 Subject: Air Filter Frame Safety Recall 0400 Model: F MY 2010 Purpose MV Agusta Motor S.p.A. has determined that a condition affecting motor vehicle safety exists on certain 2010 F4 model motorcycles. On these vehicles, the air filter frame fixation clips may become disengaged during normal vehicle use. If the clips become disengaged from the base of the air box, the air filter frame may lift up allowing foreign material by-pass the air filter. This foreign material could cause blockage of the throttle valve which could lead to injury or death of the rider. In the interest of the safety of our mutual customers and as required by law, you may sell but NOT DELIVER any motorcycles equipped with the defective air filter frame to your customers until the remedy is completed. See Required Dealer Action to perform the recall service. Motorcycles Affected Model Year 2010 F41000 motorcycles built 2/10/2010 through 4/19/2010. Please refer to the attached list for the affected V.I.N.s Markets Affected United States and International Customer Notification MV Agusta Motor S.p.A. will send a letter to registered owners of affected products notifying them of this safety related condition and instructing them to contact their dealer for the replacement service. A sample of the customer letter is attached. To protect the safety of our riders, it is our mutual responsibility to ensure the recall service is performed on all affected motorcycles. Therefore, we strongly urge you to perform the recall service even if the motorcycle was not purchased from your dealership. You are also required to perform the recall service on all affected models in your dealership inventory prior to delivering, renting or leasing those models. 2 IMPORTANT NOTE We request that you contact any owners of affected models that your records show as unregistered. Advise them of the safety recall and make arrangements for them to come in for the recall service. We also require that you provide us with their names, addresses and V.I.N.s as soon as possible to enable us to mail them an owners letter, as required in the U.S. market by the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act (as amended ) and as required in other markets by local Government Agencies. KIT SHIPMENT TO THE IMPORTERS / DEALERS: MV Agusta will ship one KIT to the importers outside Italy and to the dealers point of sale in Italy and France for every motorcycle sold. The kit will arrive at no cost to the dealers and importers. The KIT contains the following components: 8000B5157 Air Filter Frame Assembling Instructions KIT INSTALLATION FOR SOLD/USED BIKES (for service of unsold/not used bikes see NOTE (1) at the end of this procedure): To access the air filter frame a number of steps need to be followed: 1 - Remove the seats Insert the ignition key into the seat release Lightly apply pressure to the rear of the passenger seat. Turn the key and unlock the seat mechanism Remove the passenger seat pad Press the lever (1) to release the riders seat and remove it by sliding towards the rear of the motorcycle. 2 - Remove side panels Remove the side panels located on both left and right sides of the motorcycle by pulling lightly in the area of the fixation pins and sliding towards the rear of the motorcycle. 3 3 - Remove the under-seat panels Remove the right side panel under the seat by removing the 5 allen screws (2). Remove the panel paying close attention to the support pin that is ancored to the support structure. Remove the left side panel following the same procedure. 4 - Remove the airbox side covers Remove both the left and right airbox side covers removing the two screws (1). 4 5 - Remove the fuel tank Remove the breather tube. Remove the allen bolt located at the rear of the fuel tank (1). Remove the two allen bolts (2) of the fuel tank bridge support. Gently raise the fuel tank and remove the bridge support. Lift up the fuel tank. While lifting the fuel tank pay close attention to not damage the airbox. Disconnect all electrical connectors. Disconnect the fuel line paying attention to the fact that there may be pressure in the fuel lines. To remove the fuel lines you need to press the colored clips as seen in the image on the right. 5 6 - Remove the air box cover Remove the four allen bolts (two per side) that retain the airbox cover. Lift and remove the airbox cover (2). 7 - Remove the air filter frame Release the front clips (3) and remove the cover (4). 8 - Remove the air filter Remove the air filter. 9 - Removal of side fairings Remove the seven quick turn fastners (1) present on the right side fairing. Remove the right side fairing sliding it towards the front of the motorcycle. Repeat this procedure to remove the left side fairing. 6 10 Remove the mirrors Remove the two allen bolts (2) on the right side mirror. Unclip the connector and remove the right side mirror. Repeat this operation to remove the left side mirror Removal of front fairing (cowl) With a small screwdriver unclip the front headlight connector. Remove the two bolts (1) that fix the front fairing to the sides of the dashboard. Remove the two bolts that fix the headlight to the support on both sides. Slide the front fairing forward and remove it from the motorcycle Removal of air intake covers Remove the two screws (1) of the right side tube (2) from the frame. Lift the cover and remove the two plastic pins. Remove the panel from the motorcycle. Repeat to remove the left side cover. 7 Disconnect the air temperature sensor. On the left side air duct remove the turn signal indicator wire Removal of side air ducts Unhook the pin (1) that connects the air ducts. Remove the right side air duct (2) rotating away from the motorcycle. Repeat to remove the left side air duct Removal of rubber boots Extract the left and right rubber boots (1) before removing the airbox. 8 15 - Removal of the airbox base Unhook the clamp and remove the tube from the TSS. Unhook the fuel line pressing the colored buttong (1) and remove it from the fuel rail (2). Unhook the engine blow-by tube. Unhook the connector from the upper fuel injectors. Lif the airbox in the rear along with the rubber tube and injector wiring harness. Lift and remove the airbox Wash completely and dry the airbox assembly. 9 17 - Replace the air box on the motorcycle Insert the cables as visible in the figure and connect the connector of the upper fuel injectors wiring harness. Re-attach the fuel line making sure that the connector is fully attached. Fix the vacuum tube from the TSS and connect the clamp Install rubber boots Install the left and right rubber boots (1). 10 19 - Install the air filter Install the air filter, paying close attention to make sure that the rubber gasket is completely inserted into the seat in the lower air box. 20 Install the air filter frame Take a new air filter frame from kit p/n W000W0750 Install the filter frame and fix first the lower clips (1,2,3) and then the upper clips (4,5). 11 21 - Install the air box cover Remove the rubber gasket from the border of the upper air box cover and insert it onto the border of the lower air box assembly as seen in the figure below. Place the upper air box cover onto the lower air box. Attache the 4 fixations allen screws (two per side) (6) Install of side air ducts Insert the left air duct (2) into the rubber boot, repeat with the left side air duct and insert the pin visible in the figure below (1). 12 23 - Installation of air intake covers Fix the two plastic pins of left side cover (2) and than the two screws (1). Repeat the same operation for right side cover. Connect the air temperature sensor. On the left side air duct attach the turn signal indicator wire. 24 Installation of front fairing (cowl) Place the front fairing on to the motorcycle, pay attention of the correct positioning of turn signal indicator wires. Fix the two bolts that fix the headlight to the support on both sides. Fix the two bolts (1) that fix the front fairing to the sides of the dashboard. Fix the clip of the front headlight connector. 13 25 Installation of the mirrors Fix the connector of the right side mirror. Fix the two allen bolts (2) of the right side mirror. Repeat this operation to fix the left side mirror Installation of side fairings Place the left side fairing onto the motorcycle by inserting from the front towards the rear of the bike. Fix the seven quick turn fastners (1). Repeat this procedure to fix the left side fairing. 27 Installation of the fuel tank Connect the fuel line Connect the fuel pump connector. 14 Fix the two allen bolts (2) of the fuel tank bridge support. Fix the allen bolt located at the rear of the fuel tank (1). 28 Installation of the air box side covers Before re-assembling inspect the integrity of the rubber mounted nuts and replace them if necessary. 15 29 Installation of the under-seat panels Install the right side panel under the seat by fixening of the 5 allen screws (2) and the pin ancored to the support structure. Install the left side panel following the same procedure. 30 Side panels Assemble the side panels to the motorcycle paying close attention not to damage the plastic fixation pins. 31 Seats Assemble the rider and passenger seat to the motorcycle. 22 Dear MV Agusta Motorcycle Owner: MV Agusta Motor S.p.A has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists on model year 2010 F4 motorcycles built 2/10/2010 through 4/19/2010. On these vehicles, the air filter frame [Part Number 8000 B4061] fixation clips may become disengaged from the base of the air box during normal vehicle use. If this occurs, the air filter frame may lift up, allowing foreign material to by-pass the air filter. This foreign material could cause blockage of the throttle valve, increasing the risk of a crash and possible injury or death to the rider. Our records indicate that you have purchased one of the affected motorcycles. We strongly urge you to contact your dealer to make arrangements to have the appropriate service performed as soon as possible. Please contact your authorized MV Agusta Motor dealer immediately and arrange an appointment to have your motorcycle repaired. Your dealer will install an upgraded air filter frame (P/N 8000B5157), which has been redesigned to ensure that the air filter remains in its correct position during normal vehicle use and does not allow foreign material into the air box. Actual labor time to perform this service will be less than two hours; however, due to scheduling, the dealer may require your motorcycle for a longer period of time. The parts and labor will be free of charge to you. To verify that the service has been completed, your dealer will ask you to sign a recall claim. If you have sold your motorcycle, please forward the appropriate information about your purchaser. This will enable us to contact him/her and advise that person of this recall. Also, MV Agusta Moto requests that any vehicle lessor receiving this recall notice must forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within ten days. Should you choose to ride your motorcycle prior to this service, we urge you to be aware of this condition. If you take your motorcycle to your dealer on a mutually agreed upon date and they do not perform the required service to your satisfaction, please contact MV Agusta Motor S.p.A for immediate assistance at the address or telephone number listed on this letterhead. If your dealer or MV Agusta Motor S.p.A. fails or is unable to remedy your motorcycle without charge within a reasonable time, you may wish to inform your local governmental safety administration office.
