5 Introduction Page 1 Hospitals, clinics, care homes and schools are all environments where vulnerable users require protection from dangerously hot surfaces. It is therefore critical to service providers that surface temperatures are low and products are clean, simple, easily controlled and require little maintenance. Poor design which neglects any of these essential areas Hospitals can compromise safety and have significant consequences for both end users and service providers. GP Surgeries With the pressure to provide buildings fit for purpose constantly increasing, intense media coverage surrounding MRSA and other healthcare acquired infections only adds to the demands placed upon Schools & Nurseries service providers. Guided by these key drivers, the design team at Contour Casings, in consultation with industry experts, has developed a new range of low surface temperature radiator products that address all of today s essential requirements. 6 Page 2 The DeepClean Way The Problem The problem of accessing inside of LST radiators for cleaning and maintenance has been an issue for service providers for many years. The Association of Healthcare Cleaning Professionals (AHCP) recoends that minimum cleaning frequencies for radiators are: Very High Risk Areas - Daily High Risk Areas Daily Significant Risk Areas - Daily Low Risk Areas Monthly Budgets cuts and understaffing make it difficult to maintain recoended cleaning schedules, with internal cleaning rarely taking place. This creates a greater risk to both end users and providers, with potentially higher infection rates. Low surface temperature (LST) radiators harbour dirt. The convection heating process draws in particles, lint and other contaminants and then re-distributes these particles in the air. An undisturbed casing provides ideal conditions for the growth and distribution of dirt, spores and bacteria, greatly increasing the risk of infection. Therefore, environments such as hospitals, care homes and schools, require a product that allows for fast and effective cleaning. MRSA can survive in a desiccated state in dust for long periods up to 175 days. (Source: Long-term-in-vitro survival of an epidemic MRSA phage-group III-29 strain J.H.T Wagenvoort and R.J.R Penders). Traditional LST radiator casing designs are fixed boxes and are difficult to access, with internal cleaning involving complete disassembly. Many current radiator guards are heavy and awkward to lift, cleaning staff require the assistance of several maintenance personnel and the whole process of cleaning a radiator casing is slow and costly. One guard alone can take up to 30 minutes to disassemble, remove, clean, reassemble and refit. The Solution The Trionic DeepClean LST Radiator from Contour Casings is made from a robust one-piece construction, dramatically reducing installation time and making it possible for a cleaning operative to clean the product internally and on their own. A patented, quick release, full access hinged door (UK Patent No: ), allows the front of the casing to lie flat on the floor. The door can then be stood upon if necessary while cleaning, without resulting in any structural damage. The open-hinge design also facilitates complete door removal if required. By incorporating unique rotary valve fittings, this design also allows the radiator to be lowered down to floor level. Cleaning is now possible on the top, front, sides and back of the radiator, as well as the wall around and behind the radiator. The Biocote silver-based anti-microbial coating reduces the risk of bacteria growing on the casing in an additional step towards preventing the spread of hospital acquired infections. Consequently, this would provide greater savings and improved efficiencies within the property, as lower rates of HAI s free-up beds.

8 Page 4 Anti-Ligature Technology As a key part of the low surface temperature offer, Contour Casings has developed a specialist range of LST radiators for use in secure environments such as mental health facilities and prisons, where reducing the risk of potential ligature points is of paramount importance. According to the 2005 mortality statistics, 54% of all 3172 suicides in England & Wales were by hanging, and there are as many as ten times more attempted suicides every year. As death from hanging can often occur when an individual is not fully suspended, the inspection of psychiatric wards and cells for potential ligature points should focus on fixtures and fittings at all heights. Grilles and external TRV s in LST radiators pose particular danger. Ligature points on Contour Casings antiligature LST radiator ranges have therefore been identified and addressed. 10 Page 6 Healthcare Acquired Infections The Problem With the recent rise in the awareness of so called Superbugs such as MRSA and E.coli, the issue of Healthcare Acquired Infection (HAI) has never been higher in the public and political consciousness. The threat of bacteria cross-contamination and contracting an infection is particularly high in healthcare environments, where there is an abundance of bacteria and a large number of people with low iunity levels confined to a small space. Obvious ways of passing on infection are via proximity or direct contact with contaminated surfaces. At any one time 1 in 8 patients have an HAI. Patients contracting a HAI spend an average of 2.9 times longer in hospital and at an estimated cost to the NHS of over 1 Billion each year. There are over 300,000 HAI s each year in England, with over 9000 deaths attributed to MRSA and other Superbugs in Hospital Trust expenditure on cleaning wards in 2004 exceeded 522 Million. 11 Biocote Anti-Microbial Protection Page 7 The Solution Contour Casings incorporates BioCote anti-microbial protection into LST radiators. This patented anti-microbial powder coating, provides an effective, safe and long lasting solution to a wide range of potentially dangerous bacteria, including MRSA and E.coli. The anti-microbial efficacy of BioCote products has been independently tested against a wide range of Gram- positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi. BioCote has repeatedly demonstrated reduction in the growth of these organisms and therefore becoming an integral component of good hygiene practice. BioCote is: Effective - The silver ions in BioCote cause critical functions in the bacteria to break down. The bacteria become unable to reproduce and die. Independent tests show BioCote reduces MRSA, Listeria, E.coli and Salmonella by up to 99%. Safe - The active ingredient in BioCote is the element silver, this is present in the form of silver ions. Silver is a natural antimicrobial and has been used in this way for centuries. Unlike antibiotics, there is no evidence of bacteria becoming resistant to BioCote. Long Lasting - BioCote does not leach out. The life of the products treated with BioCote has been simulated and showed no significant reduction in performance. Proven Protection Regular quality control testing is carried out to ensure the continual effectiveness of BioCote - copies of the reports are available. This radiator also incorporates several specific design features: Unrivalled access for internal cleaning or routine maintenance. A secondary expanded metal mesh (to IP31 specification) is welded behind all grilles to prevent items 3.0 in diameter or greater being inserted. Conical anti-ligature TRV shroud with viewing window enables building users to control radiator temperature easily, whilst reducing the ligature risk of an exposed TRV. Wall to wall LST s To cover-up perimeter heating or Finn Pipe Systems, or to take up surplus space between an adjoining wall and a radiator, wall to wall LST s help to deliver a uniform finish. Radius Casings To follow existing angled walls or radiators, this product uses Contours internal wall fixing bracket. Free-standing Radiators For use in applications where fixings are not available to the rear of the radiator, floor mounted fixings are provided. Coloured Radiator Guards When a different aesthetic is required or in specialist environments, colour radiator guards can be manufactured. Vertical Guards For use in environments where wall space is limited, the vertical guard s contain a grille halfway up, allowing heat to dissipate at the optimum level. All standard connections are 1/2" BSP. Kermi Type 11, 12 & Type 22 steel panel convector radiators are made from steel plate St Bead deviation Overlapping factory fitted top grille and end panels. Brackets Kermi radiators are supplied with two fully concealed brackets which are suitable for wall mounting. For the 1800 long emitter a third bracket is included. Cover Covers are manufactured from 1.5 Zintec mild steel. The leading edges of the covers have a 25 radius, resulting in a strengthened section with rolled top front and large safe radius bullnosed corners. Covers are also available in 2 Aluminium, making them non-corrosive and suitable for use in wet rooms and other such environments. Finish Kermi radiators come with a high gloss twocoat powder coating finish. They are degreased, iron phosphated and primed with cathodic dip-coating (KTL) then electrostatically powder coated (EPS) in accordance with DIN FWA. The evenly coated paintwork is emission-free, environmentally friendly and without drips. Colour: Kermi-white (similar to RAL 9016). Covers are finished in an electrostatically applied and oven cured polyester coating to provide an attractive and durable finish. The standard finish is satin white RAL Other RAL or B.S. colours can be provided. The cover finish incorporates BioCote, the patented anti-microbial coating, which helps prevent the growth of harmful bacteria, including MRSA and E.coli, reducing the risk of hospital acquired infections. Outputs Kermi Radiator heat outputs are tested to EN442, relating to a water temperature of 75º/65ºC and a room temperature of 20ºC. Test results for each model are available on request for Delta T 60. Testing Each Kermi radiator is individually tested. Test pressure: 13.0 bar. Operating Pressure: 10.0 bar. Certified to DIN ISO 9001 standard. The construction design corresponds to the BAGUV guidelines. Quality All radiators are manufactured under a BS EN ISO 9001: 2000 quality system accepted by BSI. Warranty Each radiator is under full warranty for 5 years in respect of defective materials and manufacture. Water Treatment Please refer to Kermi for water treatment information.
