1 Technical Note 291 Installation Instructions for V&P Heat Block, Magnetic Tumble Stirrer and Table On a Tecan Liquid Handler Magnetic Tumble Stirrer VP 710T-SM WARNING!!!!! Be advised that the Magnetic Tumble Stirrer has very strong magnetic fields coming from a 48 MGO Neodymium Iron Boron drive magnet. People with pacemakers should not get closer than 24 inches. Remove all magnetic influenced tools and objects from the immediate area to prevent them from being pulled onto the magnet or from striking anyone as the objects are pulled towards the magnet. Keep credit cards, watches and other magnetic sensitive items at least 24 inches from the Magnetic Tumble Stirrer s magnetic fields. Do not operate the Magnetic Tumble Stirrer in the close proximity to large pieces of aluminum or ferromagnetic material. 2 Required tools: 13mm wrench 19mm wrench or ¾ wrench Level Jacks or a support system or some kind to hold the cylinder base while the legs are being attached (may not be necessary if the Tecan robot is not installed on top of the Tecan table). Before any installation occurs, it is important to note that the magnetic cylinder s base structure is held in place with rails, gussets, and T-bolts. Proper alignment of the T-bolts inside the rail grooves is crucial. An easy method to verify that the T-bolt is properly engaging the rail is to look at the T-bolt and ensure that the slot on the face of T-bolt is perpendicular to the length of the rail groove. T-bolt Alignment: View of the slot in the T-bolt, gusset, and rail Step 1: Install legs X1 and X2 while keeping note of the gusset locations on legs X1 and X2. The X1 legs should be flush against the heat block support legs and the X2 legs should be installed in a way that does not block the fans which cool the motor. Front View Rear View The gussets for the X1 and X2 legs are kept in place to aid in installation, but can be loosened via T-nuts to adjust the height at which the cylinder will sit.

With the current gusset locations, the top of the cylinder should be approximately 30 from the floor, and the top of the heat block support 31 from the floor. This is the same height configuration as the UCSD system and was found optimal to reduce eddy current and heat while maintaining consistent stirring. V&P Scientific, Inc 3 Technical Note 291

Step 2: Once the table has been assembled and installed inside the Tecan table, move the magnetic cylinder table as close as possible towards the front of the Tecan robot.

Proper positioning of the cylinder is crucial in regards to giving the stir elements enough exposure to its magnetic field. Step 3: Next is leveling the system.

4 Step 2: Once the table has been assembled and installed inside the Tecan table, move the magnetic cylinder table as close as possible towards the front of the Tecan robot. This will get as much of the magnetic cylinder underneath the heat block as possible. Proper positioning of the cylinder is crucial in regards to giving the stir elements enough exposure to its magnetic field. Step 3: Next is leveling the system. To level the system, utilize the 4 adjustable feet with a level on the magnetic base to observe the system as it is being adjusted. To manipulate the adjustable feet, first unscrew the locking nut then back the foot adjustment threads out. Leveling Foot Once the table is roughly where it is desired, attempt to rotate the 4 feet to see which feet may be loose. Back the loose foot first out until resistance is felt. Tighten the locking nut back up to keep the adjustment in place. Be sure to have a secure hold with a wrench on the leveling foot adjustment flats to prevent the leveling foot from turning while the locking nut is being tightened. Step 4: Tie in the magnetic cylinder base table to the Tecan table with the provided rails and gussets. This will help eliminate vibrations and the possibility of movement in the system. The front portion will be tied in through 2 gussets interfacing with the Tecan table. The rear portion will be tied in through rails and gussets to the support rails of the Tecan table. Step 5: The motor is mounted via 4 screws. These 4 screws can also be backed out to adjust the belt tension of the pulley by raising or lowering the motor. Photo of the motor mount.
