Our programme gives apprentices the foundation to develop a long-term career, with a solid skill base. DAF Trucks One thing you should know about before joining our apprenticeship is DAF Trucks. DAF Trucks is the big player in the UK s truck manufacturing industry, and everything we do here at Ford & Slater is a result of something which starts at DAF. As you may already know (but then maybe not), DAF Trucks is well established as one of the most prestigious truck manufacturers in Europe. With over 20 years as market leader DAF continue to dominate the UK haulage industry, and for every truck you see on the road, every third truck will likely be a DAF. DAF Trucks are sold all over the world, with it s main HQ in Eindhoven in the Netherlands. But the great thing about DAF Trucks UK in particular is that almost all the trucks you see on British roads are built right here at home at the specialised Leyland factory in Lancashire. And we are so proud of this fact that we take all apprentices on a personalised factory tour to learn more about the trucks they will be working with. 4 Next generation in transport innovation In the 90 years since DAF Trucks was formed, the cosmetic and technological specifications of each truck has changed a lot, but the quality and aftersales care expected by our customers remains the same. This is why skilled HGV technicians are as important to DAF Trucks as the products themselves. You re learning and earning money at the same time, which I think is a great thing to be able to do. 5 Building the future : One technician at a time So, what has all this got to do with you? The DAF HGV Technician Apprenticeship is a three year government approved course that combines hands-on workshop training with block release for college training and study, designed to train and prepare you to become part of the next generation of commercial vehicle professionals. Ford & Slater have been proud supporters of the scheme since 1996, and since then we have guided over 200 apprentices through the programme to become fully qualified technicians, equipped for a career at Ford & Slater. Entry requirements We re looking for technically minded young people aged 16 and over, with grades at GCSE level C/4 or above in Maths, English and IT and a keen interest in truck mechanics. What will you get from it? Apprentices who complete the scheme will earn a Level 3 Diploma in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair, with potential to move onto a Level 4 management qualification. These graduates will also be qualified technicians. Many of our apprentices choose a career with us here at Ford & Slater once their apprenticeship ends and many even progress through the ranks to become part of Ford & Slater s management team. Others may choose to use the skills they have learned abroad. As part of the PACCAR family of companies our apprentices have the opportunity to work with DAF Trucks and DAF dealerships all over the world. And for those who decide to continue building on that skillset after their apprenticeship, all the training you receive from Ford & Slater can be transferred to various other vehicles, including cars and bikes. The thing I find most rewarding about being a Ford & Slater apprentice is that I feel like I m doing something for people. I m getting their trucks back on the road. Levi Knights, 2nd Year HGV Apprentice, Apprentice Panel Case Study : Kaine Gamble I began my career with Ford & Slater when I was 16. I spent three years training at Ford & Slater s Corby dealership until I became a fully qualified HGV Technician. At 20 I completed my IMI Level 4 management course and was promoted to Shift Supervisor, where I worked for a year before moving into a Workshop Controller position and procuring my Class 1 and 2 HGV Licence. In 2013 I celebrated achieving Master Technician status. I spent four years in my position as Master Tech and Workshop Controller until 2017 when I was promoted to my current position of Service Manager of Ford & Slater Corby. In just 10 years I have gone from DAF Apprentice to managing the entire service and maintenance operations for my dealership. It has been both challenging and fun and I would encourage anyone who is looking for a career as a technician to consider the apprenticeship with Ford & Slater. 7 DAF APPRENTICE SCHEME 8

6 Life as an apprentice As an apprentice you will be permanently employed by Ford & Slater, and paid a wage too. This is a two-part apprenticeship, meaning your time is split between the workshops here at Ford & Slater, and the purposebuilt DAF Trucks Centre of Learning at the City of Bristol College. Practical skills and hands-on experience are gained working alongside qualified technicians in a fully equipped, state-ofthe-art workshop at the dealership you are employed by. All trucks currently run on diesel engines This is because diesel alone can create the high torque power needed to move heavy loads. This may sound bad for the environment, but recent studies have shown that diesel cars emit as much as 10 times more toxic pollution than trucks and buses, and with around 70 cars to each one truck on the UK roads we don t think that s so bad. But we know it s not great, which is why DAF Trucks are working on cleaner and more environmentally friendly ways of trucking all the time. The New DAF engines are much cleaner than those found in cars, and DAF are in the process of trialling technology including; hybrid, electric and natural gas powered vehicles. 7 All DAF technicians begin at the Centre of Learning How long will you be at college? Trainees are required to spend 28 weeks of their three year course studying away from home at college. These weeks are usually broken into blocks of two and, due to its location, requires our apprentices to stay in Bristol at this time. Apprentices are not obligated to stay over the weekend as long as this doesn t affect their studies. What will I learn at college? Classes at the college are both practical and classroom based, but all are required to enable trainees to complete their Technical Certificate and Core Skills. At the DAF Centre of Learning you will find: Engines and trucks, including a hybrid DAF Engine testing and diagnostic equipment Computer suite Classrooms Canteen Chill out zone Library and study areas with computers It s a career for life, you re always learning new things, meeting new people it s a career you ll always enjoy and you can always work your way up the ladder. 8 Free accommodation with trusted landlords When studying at the college, our apprentices are given free accommodation with one of many trusted and vetted landlords. A homestay provides an opportunity to stay with a local family close to the college, where you are made to feel welcome and treated as part of the family. You will usually stay with one family for the three years of study, along with a couple of your fellow apprentices. You will get a bed, breakfast and an evening meal, and all hosts and homes are inspected regularly including an up-to-date Gas Certificate and DBS check. Case Study : Jenny and George We stayed with Jenny and George while studying at college and right away they made us feel like family - they even came to the DAF graduation. I m now studying my Technician Level 4 and Jenny and George have offered to let me stay with them when in Bristol. So far we have had really nice, polite lads who are a credit to the company! Some of the students have even remained friends and keep in regular contact with us. We enjoy hearing how they get on at college and what they are learning about while we sit and eat our evening meal together. A home from home! We hope we provide a caring home stay for all students and try and go the extra mile to make them feel at ease, especially when new to college and maybe away from home for the first time. 9 Award winning scheme Qualified Technicians We currently employ around 170 fully qualified technicians and master technicians here at Ford & Slater. Of these technicians, a couple from each dealership are specially trained by DAF Trucks to mentor our apprentices. Apprenticeship Co-ordinator Lee Sursham is Ford & Slater s go-to for all things apprenticeship. As Apprenticeship Co-ordinator it is Lee s job to ensure that our trainees are happy, safe and working towards becoming well-rounded, skilled and knowledgeable technicians. The Apprentice Panel The Ford & Slater Apprentice Panel is new initiative which offers trainees the opportunity to have their say on issues affecting the company and apprentices, and build an atmosphere in which they thrive and enjoy coming to work each and every day. All ten of our dealership locations are represented by at least one handpicked panel member who is provided with the tools, training and coaching to make the most of their inclusive role. With the help of the Apprenticeship Co-ordinator, Panel members are invited to offer their thoughts on how the Ford & Slater apprenticeship programme is promoted to future candidates. They are involved in the design process of leaflets, brochures (this one included!) and video content and encouraged to assist with the promotion of apprenticeships at events and trade shows. DAF Support As a company, DAF continue to develop and introduce new technology on their trucks; the same principle applies to their Apprentice Programme. DAF pays for all college tuition fees, travel, accommodation, meal and uniform costs whilst at college, as well as the cost of the assessment visits to your dealership. They also invest heavily at the college, supplying diagnostic equipment, components, and vehicles to ensure that you have the latest technology and DAF specific systems to keep what you are learning relevant to your workshop experience. 15 DAF APPRENTICE SCHEME 16

10 Achievement. Recognition. Development. I started the job not even knowing how an engine worked and finished coming third in the DAF Apprentice of the Year, Tom Rowe, Former HGV Apprentice The achievements of Ford & Slater apprentices are recognised in three annual events; the Ford & Slater Apprentice Awards, the DAF Apprentice Awards and the WorldSkills UK competition. The Ford & Slater Apprentice Awards celebrate, on a dealership level, the achievements and development of our apprentices, with awards for: Mentor of the Year, Most Improved, Outstanding Achievement and Apprentice of the Year. The DAF Apprentice Awards bring together apprentices from across the dealer network to a ceremony in Bristol. Here apprentices graduate in their respective years and the top three in each year collect a prize for their achievements. The 3rd year 1st place winner is crowned DAF Apprentice of the Year. WorldSkills UK : In celebration of the talent in our workshops, we often put trainees forward to compete regionally and nationally against technicians from other manufacturers. 11 Parent & guardian information DAF work in partnership with Skillnet to jointly manage the DAF National Dealer Apprenticeship Programme. The Programme is designed to give young people, like your son or daughter, the chance to train and qualify as a technician, working on some of the most modern and sophisticated trucks on the road. Travel, accommodation and food costs. Apprentices are required to attend DAF s Centre of Learning at the City of Bristol College on block release. All public transport travel and accommodation costs are taken care of, as well as a home cooked meal in the evenings and lunch while at college. Clothing and equipment Apprentices will be provided with the necessary tools, equipment and clothing when attending college. However, trainees will be required to bring their own stationary, black trousers and shoes. A viable alternative to full-time education A government approved apprenticeship with Ford & Slater means trainees earn while they learn and avoid all costs associated with a university education. This means the following will be paid for: All tuition fees All travel costs to the DAF College in Bristol All accommodation costs whilst at college All costs associated with the assessors visits every eight weeks In five years your son or daughter will be a skilled technician with great earning potential and career prospects. There will be no burden of debt as a result of their education and training, and with their paid wage apprentices could be between 105,000 and 130,000 better off than peers who choose to stay in full time education. Earn while you learn Apprentices are offered a wage for the time spent at Ford & Slater. This is around 7,000 for the first year, 11,000 for the second and 17,000 for the third, giving apprentices a valuable income to gain independence in other parts of their life. Homestays While studying at college apprentices will be provided with homestay accommodation. DAF and Ford & Slater have a trusted bank of suitable landlords who we have worked with for years, and are experienced in providing a comfortable and safe environment for your son or daughter. Toolbox Allowance Scheme After a three month probation period all apprentices receive a basic Snap-on toolbox kit worth 1,100. The toolbox is gradually paid for out of the trainees wage, but money can be earned back for good behaviour, initiative, attitude and attendance as part of the Toolbox Allowance Scheme. I have been mentoring first year trainees and sharing my mechanical and theoretical knowledge with them. I hope to progess into management and Ford & Slater are supporting me with this by sending me on a course. Ryan Davies, 1st Year HGV Apprentice, Apprentice Panel Vehicle Body Repair Vehicle body repair apprentices will specialise in repairing damaged vehicles, including damage to paintwork. This apprenticeship takes three years to complete and is delivered from the Remit Academy, Derby. Successful apprentices are awarded a Level 2 & 3 Diploma in Vehicle Body Repair. Parts Sales This is a three year, sales based apprenticeship which is delivered from the Ford & Slater Dealership Parts department. Apprentices are awarded a Level 2 & 3 Diploma in Vehicle Parts Competence, and will cover aspects such as; stock control, workshop counter service and customer care. 21 DAF APPRENTICE SCHEME 22
