Stacker Belt Tensioning
Hybrid Stacking Belt Tensioning Procedure This procedure is used when a belt needs to be tensioned due to looseness. Follow the directions thoroughly to ensure proper belt tensioning. 1 Shut down the stacker and lockout/tagout. 2 Loosen the locknut for the belt take-ups and use the adjustment nut to adjust the tension. NEVER misalign the take-up roll more than ¼". More than ¼" of misalignment of the roll will cause damage to the bearings, its seals, belts, or other take-up components. Belt Take-Ups Locknut Adjustment Nut NOTICE: The take-ups are used to loosen the belt for removal, tensioning, and tracking. Never use power tools to adjust belt take-ups!
Hybrid Stacking Belt Tensioning Procedure 3 Locate the belt in the center of the rolls where the belt will run. 4 Measure 100" of the belt, and mark it on the belt. 5 Tension the belt. a. Magnetic/Vacuum Bridge 1. Increase the tension with the adjustment nut until the marks are " apart. This will give the belt.75% tension. NEVER exceed 1% tension on the magnetic bridge belts. 2. When adjusting the belt or tensioning the belt NEVER misalign the take-up roll more than ¼". More than ¼" of misalignment of the take-up roll will cause damage to the bearings, seals, or other take-up components. Adjustment Nut NOTICE: Never use power tools to adjust belt take-ups! 6 Remove lockout device and restart the stacker. Jog the belts forward slowly. 7 Track the belts by turning the adjustment screws of the take-up roll. a. Magnetic/Vacuum Bridge 1. Do not adjust more than one flat (¼ turn) of the screw at a time until the belt remains in the center of the rolls. 8 Increase the belt speed, extend and retract the belt conveyor (if so equipped), and watch the belt to see if more tracking is necessary. 9 Check the belt often after major adjustments. The belt may move off center when running different parts or moving the conveyor in and out. This may require further adjustments. BELT TENSIONING IS NOW FINISHED
Hybrid Stacking Belt Replacement Procedure This procedure is used when a belt needs to be replaced or needs tensioning due to looseness. Follow the directions thoroughly to ensure proper belt replacement. 1 Shut down the stacker and lockout/tagout. 2 Remove the belt(s) to be replaced. 3 Loosen the locknut for the belt take-ups and use the adjustment nut to adjust the tension for the new belt. NEVER misalign the take-up roll more than ¼". More than ¼" of misalignment of the roll will cause damage to the bearings, its seals, belts, or other take-up components. Locknut Adjustment Nut NOTICE: Never use power tools to adjust belt take-ups! 4 Thread the new belt. Be sure the belt is threaded correctly. 5 Clamp the belt to hold all the belt slack on top of the conveyor or magnetic bridge. Use two pieces of wood and two C-clamps on each end. 6 Place belt splicer on conveyor. 7 Stack the bottom of the splicer (per specifications of the belt splicer). 8 Lay prepared ends of the belt on the center of the belt splicer and mesh the ends together.
Hybrid Stacking Belt Replacement Procedure 9 Lay straight edge along edge of belt to ensure the two loose ends are parallel to each other. 10 Clamp pressure bars on splicer to hold the belt in place. 11 With a small soldering iron, melt the tips of the belt together to prevent the belt from shifting while splicing. 12 Stack the top of splicer (per specifications of belt splicer). 13 Splice belts (per specifications of belt splicer). 14 After cooling, remove the belt splicer. 15 Remove C-clamps and wood. 16 Locate the belt in the center of the rolls where the belt will run. 17 Measure 100" of the belt and mark it on the belt. 18 Tension the belt. a. Magnetic/Vacuum Bridge 1. Increase the tension until the marks are " apart. This will give the belt.75% tension. NEVER exceed 1% tension on the magnetic bridge belts. 2. When adjusting the belt or tensioning the belt, NEVER misalign the take-up roll more than ¼". More than ¼" of misalignment of the take-up roll will cause damage to the bearings, seals, or other take-up components. Adjustment Nut NOTICE: Never use power tools to adjust belt take-ups!
Hybrid Stacking Belt Replacement Procedure 19 Unlock the power, start the line, and jog the belts forward slowly. 20 Track the belts by turning the adjustment screws of the take-up roll. a. Magnetic/Vacuum Bridge 1. Do not adjust more than one flat (¼ turn) of the screw at a time until the belt remains in the center of the rolls. 21 Increase the belt speed, extend and retract the belt conveyor (if so equipped), and watch the belt to see if more tracking is necessary. 22 Check the belt often when first installed or after major adjustments. The belt may move off center when running different parts or moving the conveyor in and out. This may require further adjustments. BELT REPLACEMENT IS NOW FINISHED
Hybrid Stacking Belt Tracking Procedure This procedure is used when a belt needs to be adjusted to keep the belt from tracking side to side during production. This procedure is written for stackers that have two 32" wide belts. For proper tracking, read the entire procedure prior to making adjustments to the belts. 1 This procedure assumes that a new belt has already been installed or an existing belt needs some tracking adjustments. 2 After the belt has been installed and is ready for adjustment, shutdown the stacker and lockout/tagout all power sources. WARNING: A lockout/tagout must be performed anytime entering the stacker area is necessary. 3 Center the belt on the pulleys. The pulleys need to be the same distance from centerline on the drive and tension ends. 4 Tension the belt. Follow the Belt Tensioning Procedure for proper tensioning. a. When tensioning the belt, make sure the take-ups are extended the same distance. This will keep the tension rolls parallel with the drive rolls. If the tension is different on both sides of the belt, use the average on both sides. NOTICE: Parallel rolls will eliminate belt camber from occurring. 5 Unlock the power and start the line. 6 Jog the belts using the points listed below. a. Change the jog speed by 1 /3 down of the actual jog speed. This will allow better time to react while the belt is running. NOTICE: The jog speed is set to its original speed when tracking is finished. b. Let the belt make at least one full revolution or preferably allow it time to run until the belt finds its home on both the drive and tension pulleys. It is usually best to have two people monitoring this process. c. Document how the belt is running on the pulleys. 7 Adjust the support roller (#1) closest to the tension pulley. Drive Pulley Support Roller #2 Support Roller #1 Tension Pulley STACKING BRIDGE SIDE VIEW
Hybrid Stacking Belt Tracking Procedure DRIVE SIDE Support Roller #1 Tension Pulley a. Loosen Bolts NOTICE: Moving the support roller in the direction of the dashed line will cause the belt to move in the direction that the solid line is pointing. a. Loosen Bolts CONTROL SIDE Material Flow ENTRY END STACKING BRIDGE TOP VIEW a. Loosen the bolts on the control or drive side of the roll that needs to be adjusted. b. Move the roll in the direction you want the belt to move on the tension pulley to center the belt. Rule of thumb is the belt will move about 1" on the tension pulley for every 1 /8" the end of the support roll is moved. c. After adjustment, tighten the support roller bolts. d. Jog the belts forward and observe belt movement. e. Continue adjustments until the belt is centered on the tension pulley.
8 Jog the belts in reverse. Hybrid Stacking Belt Tracking Procedure Drive Pulley Support Roller #2 2 a. If the belt walks too much (more than ½") while running in reverse, then support roller #2 will need to be adjusted. b. Adjust the rear support roller #2 by using the same procedure listed in Step 7. 9 Jog the belts forward. Adjustments to the rear support roller may affect the belt on the tension pulley. If the belt is tracking off center on the tension pulley, repeat Step Document the belt location on the pulleys, take-up distances, and verify the amount of tension on the belt. Monitor the belts for a day and verify the belts are staying in the desired position. Belts can relax after initial startup and this could affect the tracking of the belts. 11 Checklist questions: a. Are the belts tracking on center of the tension pulley? b. Are the belts tracking on center of the drive pulley? c. When viewing the belts down the length of the stacker, do the belts look straight? d. On the underside of the stacker, is the belt gap between the two belts consistent from the entry end? Typically this is approximately 8" between belts. e. Have the belt jog speeds been set back to the original speeds? f. Are all the bolts tight for the support rollers and take-ups? BELT TRACKING IS NOW COMPLETE
