Economic Relevance: Corrosion Costs for Naval Platforms Total Annual DoN Cost: $7.36B Top 20 Corrosion Cost Drivers Navy Ships Corrosion Maintenance Cost, $B Aviation Ships Ground Vehicles Facilities
Ballast Tank Corrosion Importance to the Navy Represervation of US Navy ship tanks represented # 1 annual maintenance cost to fleet Currently, 4000 shipboard tanks opened, cleaned, inspected and gasfreed each year at a total cost $32M/yr Cost of preservation over $250M to preserve tanks each year 50 % of tank work is unplanned due to corrosion occurring during the interval between cyclic inspections Tanks are difficult to inspect and evaluate, at a cost of $8-15K per tank gas-free, open & inspect 4
Maintenance $ Savings Open, Cleaning, Gas-free & Inspect Current Cost of $32M per year Eliminate Cleaning & Gas-Free w/remote Monitoring Savings of $15M per year Improved Resource Application Better Maintenance Planning - 10% Saving Savings of $25M per year Reduced Structural Damage Savings from Improved Inspections & Analysis, Early Detection, Re-preservation & Remedial Actions Est. Savings of $10M per year $50M = Total Expected Annual Savings 5
Corrosion Sensor Overview Measures the state of preservation without the need for costly opening/gas-freeing or manned entry. Consists of a polarization sensors and instrumented anode and to establish tank coating condition. Allows for monitoring of both electrochemical potential (at multiple points) and the measurement of current requirements via instrumented anodes. Resultant data and analyses allow for quantitative determination of tank coating condition. 6
Corrosion Sensor Components Measures the state of preservation without the need for costly opening/gas-freeing or manned entry. Consists of : Ag/AgCl Chloride Reference Half-Cells (qty. 2-5 per sensor system): measures the polarization behavior of the tank (Corrosion Protection Level) Instrumented Zinc Anode which allows for independent measurement of anode current output (Relates to Tank Coating Condition and allows for Cathodic Protection System Life Prediction) Integral Logging System for long-term data storage (Stand Alone or Ship Tie-in System with 15yr Battery Life) Analysis Software for Corrosion Risk Assessment, Ranking and Trend Analysis of single or multiple tanks aboard ship 7

Marriage of New Coating Systems with New Inspection Technology Current legacy products have been proven to be poor performers June 2010 USS Nimitz survey found an average of 23 mils extra paint from overcoating 14 tons extra topside weight The necessary inspection tools AND procedures have not been employed for assessing topside and nonskid coating condition and arguably not previously existed
Composites - The Problem Due to prolonged exposure in a harsh sea environment, the traditional materials used in the manufacture of electrical boxes and conduit consistently require maintenance or replacement. Boxes and conduit provide protection from the harsh topside environment and mechanical damage. Certain electrical systems also require boxes / conduit to provide EMI/EMP shielding. Failure of boxes or conduit is often detrimental to shipboard operations. Metallic boxes corrode resulting in box seal leakage and loss of electrical function Switches and controls are no longer operational Personnel safety hazard - potential for electrical shock Brass boxes corrode the ship structure Conduit and metal fittings corrode causing electrical system failure or reduced EMI/EMP performance.
Metal fittings corrode resulting in loss of function of the encased electrical system Stern gate and lighting control system corrosion Typical conduit jacket failure Ship structure corrosion due to Brass enclosure box
