1 Technical Bulletin 53 Robin BMFL CMY module reassembly procedure Version 1.0 Steve Eastham Abstract Instructions for taking apart and reassembling the BMFL colour bulkhead. 2 Prepare modules 1. Prepare modules BMFL Spot BMFL Blade Remove both fixed color Wheels. Disconnect strobe motors. Slacken the belt jockey wheels 1/2 turn. Remove screws as shown, note that on the Spot, 2 long screws are underneath the plate as shown by the arrows. The screws are long to hold some wires in place. Lift off the strobe unit and remove the pulley wheels. Note their positions as they are different sizes. 2. Remove dichroic flags The belt needs to be detached from the outside carrier as shown. Later models have a spot of glue on the inner one try to keep this attached. You can make a white mark with TipEx on the belt for guidance when refitting, but it is more important to understand that the belt should be refitted so that it is not possible to adjust by another tooth when both flags are at the ends of travel. This applies to all 4 flag sets, but note that the 2nd and 4th set are inverted. Unscrew and remove the clamp holding in the slide bar on the left, and remove the screws from the sensor on the right and let it hang free. Do not remove the right hand clamp. Detach the belt from the outside carrier. Move the flags to the middle. Gently prise the bar from the left hand side and pull leftwards to detach it from the other end (there may be silicone - this is to stop it rattling). 2
3 Remove dichroic flags As you remove the filter assemblies give yourself plenty of room and place the assemblies down in order. Do not get them mixed up. For the second filter set, spin the assembly 180 degrees and remove the clamp from the left and the sensor board from the right as before. Remove the belt from the outside of the runner (inverted this time), and flip the belt over. Move the filters to the middle. Then gently prise out the runner bar from the left, pull to the left and towards you to detach it then lift out the assembly, guiding it carefully upwards and forward away from you through the runner bars. Lift away the bar, flags and belt as one assembly and place carefully aside. Spin the bulkhead 180 degrees again and this Gently prise out the bar from the right, pull it to the right time slacken the screws which tension the motor. and towards you to then lift upwards the flag assembly Detension the belt by pushing the motor inwards then from between the bars. unmount the belt from the outside runner and off the pulley wheel (it s a bit of a stretch but the belt is tough). Spin the bulkhead 180 degrees and repeat for the last set of filters. 3
4 Refitting dichroic flags 3. Refitting dichroic flags Before replacing, clean off any old grease. It should not be necessary to dismantle the filters from the bars. Put the filter assemblies back dry. Apply Aeronix oil with a brush as each filter set is replaced. Do not use the dropper and do not apply direct from the bottle. Move the filters to the middle of the bar when removing and the same when remounting. You might find it helpful when reassembling to remove one or both cooling fans. When reattaching the belt to the outside carriers, the ones which go in from the top are easy. The ones which go up from underneath are harder but in both cases, when the filters are fully out they should touch the posts at either end as closely as possible. It s very important that you get this right. For the belts which attach from underneath the carrier, it helps if you apply some tension to the belts when reattaching but leave the final tensioning till the end. Belt tension is taken up on the motor adjustment primarily. Make sure you can move them a couple of millimetres outwards when tensioning the belts do not let the pulleys scrape on the posts. Belt tension is not critical but do not overtighten. Clean the filters as you go making sure there are no fingermarks or oil smears. 4
