Introduction vii Introduction This manual contains the necessary information to maintain a bass trombone. The manual covers both bass trombone valve types: Thayer valve and rotary valve. The reader requires a basic understanding of the trombone (less than a year s playing experience) to fully use the manual. The manual does not include chapters on cleaning the valve sections and slide. While possible to perform a basic cleaning by one s self, a chemical bath performed at your local repair shop provides a more effective and complete cleaning. The process of maintaining rotary valves requires significantly less time than maintaining Thayer valves. Allow at least thirty minutes the first time you attempt to maintain Thayer valves. After several times maintaining your instrument, you can complete the full process (slide, valves, tuning slide, and mouthpiece) regularly in less than thirty minutes. The slide needs maintenance at least once a week. Depending on how much you use your instrument, the valves need to be maintained at least once a week, usually at least twice a week. Thayer valves require more frequent oiling than rotary valves, usually at least twice a week. The tuning slides require the least attention. You only need to lubricate the tuning slides every couple of weeks. The mouthpiece, like the valves, depends on your use. You should spray or clean the mouthpiece at least once a week.

Thayer Valve Maintenance

Thayer Valve Maintenance 3 Thayer Valve Maintenance Disassembly Remove the three tuning slides while pressing down on both triggers. Unscrew the hinges and remove the bell from the valve section. Separate the F and Gb valves.

Wipe the valve and inner cone gently with a cotton rag. Remember to clean in between the valve and the joint. Take the light weight valve oil and liberally apply in between the valve and the joint. Also, apply to the inner cone and the valve itself.
Thayer Valve Maintenance 5 Place the valve back into the cone. Replace the valve cone cap and tighten securely. Tighten the braces. F Valve Take the F valve section. Remove the screw from the ball joint. Caution: The trigger is spring loaded. Keep a hold on the trigger while removing the screw to prevent the trigger from snapping back. Unscrew the valve cone cap. Separate the valve from the cone. Wipe the valve and inner cone clean with a cotton rag. Remember to clean in between the valve and the joint as before. Apply the light weight valve oil liberally in between the valve and the joint. Also, apply oil to the valve and inner cone as before. Place the valve back into the cone. Tighten the valve cone cap securely. Tighten the braces. Replace the screw into the ball joint and reattach trigger. Do not over tighten the screw.
6 How to Maintain a Bass Trombone Reassembly Replace the screw in the Gb valve s ball joint. Turn the valve section upside down to reattach the Gb trigger to the ball joint. Tighten the remaining braces. Apply one drop of heavy ball joint oil to each of the four ball joints. Work both the F and Gb triggers. Reattach the bell to the valve section and tighten the braces. Push down on the triggers. Replace the three tuning slides.
