3 WARNING PAGE 3 Although the TEG-1000 has a perspex safety shield through which the grinding process can be safely observed, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT strongly advises every user of a Tungsten Electrode Grinding machine to wear safety goggles and ear protection when grinding. The TEG-1000 is a simple grinding machine where the wheel rotates behind a safety shield. Nevertheless, it is good workshop practice to not wear any loose articles of clothing, such as ties, oversize shirts, jewellery etc. Furthermore, we also strongly advise users of the TEG-1000 Tungsten Electrode Grinder (and any other Tungsten Electrode Grinder) to only use geniune Techweld MultiStrike Tungsten Electrodes which are free of radioactive thoria. Thoriated tungstens produce radioactive and carcinogenic dust and users should wear the correct protective equipment to avoid breathing in thoriated tungsten electrode dust. Grinding must take place on the face of the wheel as instructed and not on the edge of the wheel. CAUTION: PLEASE NOTE THAT WARRANTY IS INVALID, if the motor cover is removed. 4 INTRODUCTION PAGE 4 Thank you for purchasing our Techweld MultiStrike TEG-1000 Tungsten Electrode Grinder. You will see that this has been designed and manufactured specifically for grinding tungsten electrodes. Its design prevents the grinding of other items to minimise the risk of contaminating your tungsten electrodes. Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT has a wide experience of the performance of different tungsten electrode types. So, if you want to eliminate the risk of breathing in radioactive thoria dust from your thoriated tungstens, contact us for details of the non-thoriated, nonradioactive type which perform twice as well as thoriated tungstens. voltage and wiring Unless you have specifically ordered a 220V Tungsten Grinder, your model will be for operation on a 110V 50/60 Hz AC single phase supply. Ensure that the correct plug is fitted for connection to your 110V supply or a suitable transformer at 1 KVA rating. If your grinder arrives fitted with a 220V UK plug and your electrical requirement is different, arrange for a competent person to rewire with a new plug to suit your electrical socket or use a suitable adaptor. tungsten electrode sizes The grinder is delivered with a multi-hole tappet to allow the grinding of 1.0, 1.6, 2.4 and 3.2 electrodes. A special collet set can be ordered separately for the grinding of short electrodes. Single hole tappets are also available for larger sizes such as 4.0, 4.8, 6.4mm and larger.

5 instructions for use PAGE 5 It is important that every operator should read these instructions before they are allowed to use the TEG-1000 Tungsten Electrode Grinder. The parts are all named in the diagram on pages 10 and 11, so you can familiarise yourself with the individual items. 1. Set the grinder on a suitable bench and check that it is stable. In the event that the grinder rocks, then use the adjustable feet to obtain stability. Plug it in to your mains supply. 2. Loosen the angle guide key then set the arrow on the collet block to the desired angle printed on the base of the unit. Once the desired angle is selected, tighten the angle guide key. 3. Find the corresponding size of hole in the multi-hole tappet for the tungsten to be ground. Then insert the tungsten into that hole. 4. Please ensure the operator is wearing the correct safety items before starting to operate this unit. 5. Rotate the multi hole tappet until the tungsten touches a suitable place on the wheel. NOTE: You MUST set the tungsten against the FACE of the wheel not the edge of the wheel. 6. Remove tungsten briefly and press the green push on switch to start the motor. 7. Re-insert the tungsten carefully through the selected hole in the multi hole tappet until it meets the wheel and starts to grind and turn the tungsten with a light pressure, between the thumb and index finger, against the face of the wheel. NOTE: Times for grinding are shown on table 1 on page When the tungsten is ground suitably, remove it from the multi hole tappet and turn off the motor using the red push off switch. 9. By experimenting, each operator will determine how many turns of the electrode will be needed to achieve the required point.

6 replacing the wheel on the TEG-1000 Grinder PAGE 6 IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: Please make sure the TEG-1000 Grinder is unplugged before replacing the wheel. To perform this operation you will require the following tools: 1 x 6mm Allen key. 1 x 4mm Allen key. 1. Insert the large Allen key into the location holes on top of the wheel housing cover and loosen. 2. Remove wheel housing cover by holding in both hands and lifting up and off. 3. Using the small Allen key loosen the front screw and remove. There are two washers also. You will need to hold the shaft behind the wheel to prevent it turning. 4. Remove wheel by gentle manipulation using both hands. Replace with new. 5. When the diamond grinding wheel is in position insert the screw and nuts and tighten with the small Allen key again holding the shaft behind the wheel. 6. Replace the wheel housing cover, using the large Allen key to tighten bolts through the location holes. 7. The grinder is now ready for operation.

7 hints and tips PAGE 7 The table below shows some recommended grinding angles and times to sharpen each tungsten. By observing these guidelines, wear of the diamond wheel will be kept to a minimum. The wear will double if the grind time is halved and triple if the grind time is reduced to one third. Ensure the operator does not grind with excessive force which will discolour the electrode tip, overheat it and may cause splitting of the tungsten electrodes. Take plenty of time to sharpen the electrodes, ensuring you do not emit sparks and that pressure is only applied lightly. This will give maximum life and efficiency of the grinding wheel and increase the arc life of each electrode. Alter the position on the face of the wheel from time to time to avoid excessive wear in one part of the face. POSSIBLE REMEDY Check plug is fully home Check for faulty cable Check for faulty switches If unit is smoking, switch off mains quickly and contact HFT. Replace for a new one. A pin vice collet accessory is available, contact HFT for further details.

8 grinding of short tungstens PAGE 8 If you wish to grind short pieces of tungsten electrode which cannot be practically held by hand, a collet accessory kit is available. The multi hole tappet can be replaced with a single hole tappet to hold a pin vice. The electrode to be sharpened is placed into the shaft of the pin vice and tightened. The pin vice is then inserted into the single hole collet which is fitted in the tappet block. Then follow the instructions as previous. Ensure the tungsten is secured inside the collet and pin vice by tightening the tappet securing bush. Test fit-up before switching on the grinder.

The mains plug must match your electrical socket. Never modify the plug in any way. 2. Do not operate your Tungsten Electrode Grinder in rain or wet conditions. 3. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the grinder. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock. 4. If operating the TEG-1000 in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards. Tungsten Grinder use and care 1. Do not use the Tungsten Electrode Grinder if the switches do not turn it on and off. 2. Disconnect the plug from the power source before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the grinder. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the Tungsten Grinder accidentally. grinder safty warnings 1. Stand the grinder on even and stable surfaces only. 2. Position the cord to avoid tripping hazard. 3. Make sure the wheel is not contacting the workpiece before the switch is turned on. 5. Watch for vibration or wobbling that could indicate poor installation or a poorly balanced wheel. 6. Do not leave the grinder running. Operate the grinder only when attended. 7. Do not touch the workpiece immediately after operation; it may be extremely hot and could burn your skin.
