17 [Technical Report] Fiber Optic Complete Solutions Fiber Optic Types Although there are plastic fibers, the fibers used in telecommunications are made of glass with an outside diameter of 125 micron (0,125mm) and are different from the others due to the characteristics of its core (nucleous). The most used are: (MM) Multimode This is the most current fiber used in local area networks (LAN) for short distances. The core is 50 or 62.5 micron. They are named MM50/125 or MM62.5/125. Depending on the glass quality and the transmission specifications, we can distinguish between OM1, OM2, OM3 and OM4. (SM) Singlemode They have very low transmission loss, so they are used for long distances and for high performance networks. The core can be 9 or 10 micron, also called SM9/125 or SM10/125. Depending on the glass quality, we can distinguish between OS1 or OS2. Loose Tube Assembly Grouped fibers inside little gel-filled plastic tubes. Each tube can contain up to 24 fibers or more.
