5 ENGINEERS CODE OF CONDUCT 1. An Engineer shall, by thought, word and deed, act always, in a manner that will enhance the prestige of the noble profession to which he belongs. 2. An Engineer shall constantly remember that he is a creator of the new world and place the needs of his country and people above his own. 3. An Engineer shall hold in high esteem the great pioneers of his profession who have contributed in a large measure towards the welfare of the human race and assiduously endeavour to follow their footsteps. 4. An Engineer shall uphold the great tradition built up by his predecessors and strive to improve upon them. 5. An Engineer shall not misuse his technical knowledge to serve personal or parochial ambitions. 6. An Engineer shall be extraordinarily prudent in spending tax-payer s money and shall not permit personal considerations to cloud his vision in the discharge of his duties as public servant. 7. An Engineer shall be kind, courteous and considerate, but firm in his dealings with the public and co-workers. 8. An Engineer shall not scoff at the subordinates nor stoop low before his seniors but shall act with dignity and decorum with both. 9. An Engineer shall not speak or act in a manner that will embarrass another member of his profession in the eyes of others. 10. An Engineer shall not believe in rumours of malicious allegations against the member of his profession; nor shall he ever indulge in spreading such rumours and allegations light heartedly. 11. An Engineer shall zealously guard against any encroachment into his fields of activity by domineering administrators. 12. An Engineer shall present clearly the consequences to be expected if his professional judgement is over ruled by a non-professional authority where he is responsible for the professional adequacy of work. 13. An Engineer shall not receive any commission, discount or other indirect profit in connection with any work with which he is entrusted. 14. An Engineer shall endeavour to provide opportunity for the professional development and advancement of Engineers in his employ.

6 The Objectives of the Association of Tamil Nadu Highways Engineers (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) (vi) To promote and protect the service conditions and interests of the members; To improve the spirit of fraternity among the members; To guide the members in discharging their duties without fear or favour in order to enhance the prestige of the members and the department; To achieve due and rightful place for Engineers in the administration and society; To advance the Science of Highways Engineering as related to the administration, economics, planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of Highways; The professional improvement of Tamil Nadu Highways Engineers; (vii) To establish and conduct welfare schemes such as ENWELF (Engineers Welfare Fund), ARF (Accident Relief Fund) etc, or any other schemes towards the welfare of the members; (viii) To construct and maintain Association Office, Guest House and Library at State and District Headquarters to facilitate the members to stay during camps and also to update their knowledge using the library therein; (ix) (x) (xi) To institute and present awards as deem fit to the Engineers for the distinguished services rendered by them to the department and society; To grant affiliation to the Associations having members with similar qualifications and service conditions; To infuse a sense of self confidence in the members and encourage them to improve upon their morale; (xii) To assist the Government and Administration in favourably solving all the matters affecting the members and the department; (xiii) To have constant watch over the administration in respect of adherence of Statutory Rules/Service Rules and to act in a lawful manner to set right the violations if any made from the established practices / statutory rules by any authority. (xiv) To assist the members in their disciplinary cases initiated by the Government / any authority, in case the result of which may affect majority of the members.
