2 Capn Frank Reflections Director Frank Crawford Holy Cow! It s HOT-HOT-HOT!!! Welcome to Florida Summer. I don t know about anyone else, but it is getting too hot for me to ride much mid-day in the heat. However, it does force me to ride very early in the morning or later in the evening. That sure does afford me some different perspectives on riding. To ride in the morning and be ahead of the hustle & bustle of the world makes me feel like I am one-up on the world. Sunrise looks great from any angle. Late evening rides are different too. The air is heavy, still warm from the heat of the day but not stifling. Warm enough to ride in short sleeves and feel everything as you cruise along, watching the sun sink lower and lower in the evening sky. Soon enough we will be back riding in the Florida sun in mid-day, but do take advantage of the different feel riding early & late. At least 3 times since I have been Director NPR HOG someone has asked me why we pay tax, and why are we not tax exempt. Here is the answer directly out of the 2015 HOG Charter, p49. TAX STATUS H.O.G Chapters are part of the sponsoring Dealership, which is a for-profit business entity. As a result of the enactment of the Tax Payer s Bill of Rights Act of 1996, tax exempt status (charity) is not available to H.O.G. Chapters. Chapters should be seeking the advice of a Certified Public Accountant or Public Accountant as to tax filing requirements, whether or not incorporated. Rides There was a ride on the calendar to a local gentlemen s club for a while, and I ordered it taken off. That pleased some, and made others unhappy. Here is the explanation: I allowed it to be posted to the calendar and expected to research if there were any guidelines in the HOG charter or Handbook that might apply. And there are ARTICLE VIII RIDES & ACTIVITIES (HOG Charter p8) Chapter events and activities are the sole responsibility of the local Chapter and sponsoring Dealership. All Chapter activities shall have the sponsoring Dealer / H.O.G Manager approval. These events and activities may include any family oriented, safe and legal activities that promote a positive image of the Harley-Davidson lifestyle and that appeal to the Chapter membership. Big George and I discussed this issue and while neither he nor I judge anyone going to the event, we both decided that a ride to a gentlemen s club does not fit into the Harley-Davidson view of family oriented activity. I informed the Road Captain the ride would be taken off the calendar and he accepted our decision. September NPR HOG meeting..will be a week later than normal because the room is not available to us on the regular second Monday of the month. September meeting will be Monday Sept 21, Put it in your calendar please. Ride after the July General Meeting We will be doing a ride to Dairy Queen in Spring Hill after the July General HOG meeting. Some members have asked me for more night rides. This will be a pleasant ride, not heavy traffic, but not in the dark & wild country at night. Plan on riding with us. From the June NPR HOG meeting suggestion box. Suggestion #1.. Non-Harleys should not be permitted on rides or on HOG Events or shows. From the 2015 HOG Handbook p14: Participants at H.O.G events must compete on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Key word is compete. My response: ALL motorcycles are welcome on our rides, provided they are legally licensed and appear safe, and if needed, proper waivers are filled out. The Road Captain has the final say on a ride. As to shows, our ride to Brookdale was a Chapter ride to Brookdale. Ride was over when we got there. The event was a Brookdale event, judged with non-harley people and non-harley rules. Suggestion #2 How come no more cake & pie raffles? Response: Interest seemed to wane quite a lot so we suspended them for a while. Maybe it is time to bring them back. Please remember, use the suggestion box, no matter how redundant or trivial you may think your idea or question is. If I have forgotten about it, it is lost until you remind me. 5 Group Therapy...HOG STYLE! The Officer s Board of New Port Richey HOG has a very important announcement!! Volunteer Ticket Program 1. Volunteer for a specific event to work or donate! 2. Show Up and Follow Through! 3. Receive a Thank You Ticket! 4. Monthly Drawing for $25 H-D Gift Card! Contact Elaine Plourde, (phone # and address on pg. 2) This program is designed to reward those who volunteer or donate to NPR HOG. It will also avoid anyone showing up and having no specific assignments. We want everyone to know how much we appreciate your help and appreciation. There will be sign-up sheets at every chapter meeting, so if you want to help out, or if you can t show up physically and want to donate an item to the bake sale, picnic, or pancake breakfast, for instance, you are still able participate in this drawing. Full Belly Food Drive Instructions: Bring donations on an official ride. See the road captain for your ticket, then deposit your donation in the collection box at the dealer. Or, bring a donation to any event or meeting, see Elaine or Roland Plourde to make your donation and receive a ticket. If you are meeting the ride at the destination, or at a pick-up point other than the dealership, the road captains are NOT equipped to receive your donations. Please do not expect road captains to receive your donations unless you are at the dealership. Special drawing at the July general meeting! Please give generously to those in need of a little help. 6 Jeff Kohler Assistant Director/Ride Warrior It s July! It's July and Mother Nature has turned it up to "High" on the temperature scales! Nothing like mid-summer to remind you that you live in the tropics! Make sure to hydrate often when out on the sizzling roads of Florida. Even with the snow-birds away and the summer heat, the chapter has continued to show how much we love to ride. Afternoon/ Evening rain is the norm this time of year, so morning riding is your best bet to stay dry. Rain gear is helpful, but can get hot quickly once the sun peeks out again. Don't push it after a rain shower in your gear, stop and strip down early to avoid heat exhaustive problems. Everyone should be registered by now for the State Rally in Ft. Myers this October. I will be polling members in August or September to see what days are most popular for potential chapter rides to and from this event. If you want more information about the State Rally (Roar to the Shore), try this website: They have planned a great event with plenty of activities over all four days. H.O.G. As of last count, we have 175 members to participate in RIDES, and 11 Road Captains to lead those RIDES. The question is where do YOU want those 11 Road Captains to lead the rides to? Having raised three children, I long ago gave up trying to make everyone happy, but, I try to do the best I can. So I repeat the question where do YOU want those RIDES to go? While most of the Road Captains have their favorite rides, they are open to ideas for new rides. So, if you have an idea for a ride YOU would like, speak to a Road Captain, or let me know and I will try to get one of the Road Captains to put it together. By the way, I think we have an excellent group of Road Captains, so don t forget to say thank you after a RIDE. 7 Ladies Of Harley Officer Upcoming Ladies Elaine Plourde of Harley Events! Well, we have had a very hot June and I m sure July will be just as hot. We have done fairly well on our Food Drive. I m hoping that at the next Meeting in July, we will have another great night for the Food Drive to0. Please, if you can remember to bring something to put in the crate again that would be FANTASTIC. I want to THANK ALL that have given to the food drive already, it will be greatly appreciated when we drop it off to the Food Pantry. If you remember, don t forget to get your orange ticket for the drawing for bringing a can good or anything else you have brought, ok? 9 John Ott, Safety Officer A little on the Group Riding Class on June 13, for those of you that attended, I think we had a very informative class. We started the class with Dunkin Donuts Coffee and Donuts. There was training/refresher on commonly used hand signals, how to know where you should be in the lane while riding in staggered formation, and discussion on trikes in staggered formation. There was also information on debris in the roadway as well as many other safety issues. We had prizes for correct answers as the class progressed. Our road course took us on a 45 minute run through New Port Richey ending at Francis Ave. Park where pizza and drinks were served while we critiqued the run. At the end we had a drawing for a $25.00 gift certificate and a few other Harley items. Everyone had a fun learning experience. A BIG THANK YOU to Elaine for assisting with the food. Hope to see more at our next class to be scheduled in August. Now a little on Safety. Make sure you check your motorcycle lighting. We tend to assume that all our lights work, especially those of us with L.E.D. lights. Check your lights when you perform your pre-ride checks, as they do not last forever. If they are not working properly, you could be on the bad side of an accident because you were not seen, or the other drivers did not know what you were doing, like making a turn or stopping. 11 About our members! Recently there was a glitch in our website for a very short period of time and it went down about 8:32 pm and was off the grid for about 16 hours. Our Webmaster, Jerry Mott worked feverishly to put it back together. I would like to thank Jerry Mott for working tirelessly and quickly to re-establish our website so quickly, going far above and beyond to get us back up and running. My hat is off to you sir. Speeding? A rookie police officer pulled a biker over for speeding and had the following exchange: Officer: May I see your driver's license? Biker: I don't have one. I had it suspended when I got my 5th DUI. Officer: May I see the owner's card for this vehicle? Biker: It's not my bike. I stole it. Officer: The motorcycle is stolen? Biker: That's right. But come to think of it, I think I saw the owner's card in the tool bag when I was putting my gun in there. Officer: There's a gun in the tool bag? Biker: Yes sir. That's where I put it after I shot and killed the dude who owns this bike and stuffed his dope in the saddle bags. Officer: There's drugs in the saddle bags too?!?!? Biker: Yes, sir. Hearing this, the rookie immediately called his captain. The biker was quickly surrounded by police, and the captain approached the biker to handle the tense situation: Captain: Sir, can I see your license? Biker: Sure. Here it is. It was valid. Captain: Who's motorcycle is this? Biker: It's mine, officer. Here's the registration. Captain: Could you slowly open your tool bag so I can see if there's a gun in it? Biker: Yes, sir, but there's no gun in it. Sure enough, there was nothing in the tool bag. Captain: Would you mind opening your saddle bags? I was told you said there's drugs in them. Biker: No problem. The saddle bags were opened; no drugs. Captain: I don't understand it. The officer who stopped you said you told him you didn't have a license, stole this motorcycle, had a gun in the tool bag, and that there were drugs in the saddle bags.
