Patti and I were blessed with some great time making memories with our own families & grandkids as well as our GWRRA family. We had fun at our Chapter W Christmas party and our friends at Chapter J in Jackson. Now that 2019 is here it is time to get started on our 2019 calendar. We already have Wingless Weekend Summer Camp on February with the Ohio and Indiana events the week before and after so February is Party Time we hope many of you can join in the fun at whatever events fit into your schedule. When it comes to planning your chapter ride schedule try to include some of the events on the Michigan Google Calendar as well as some of the Michigan Road Safari. All the dates that were given at the fall officer meeting are on the calendar as well as our Michigan Rally M*A*S*H and Wing Ding on Labor Day weekend which will be in Nashville Tennessee. If you haven t noticed the Michigan Website has a new look! We had to move it to a new server and our webmaster Ken Kuiper has re-designed the district pages. We are working on getting the chapter pages back online but it is a time consuming process. Please be patient As the district team plans for Summer Camp Wingless Weekend we invite you to start preparing your chapter skit or a campfire story to tell around the campfire on Friday night! We are counting on your participation to create the FUN and memories of the 2019 Summer Camp. Hope to see you soon! Happy New Year! Ken & Patti Kintner Michigan District Directors Now for some Year End reminders Chapter Directors and Chapter Treasures 1

District Educators Dennis & Felicia Schulte Happy New Year! It s a great time of the year to update your safe mileage and high mileage. Please use form N.10 REP levels Data Update Form with the revised date of January 1, 2018 and mail it to us at 1498 Sand Beach Road, Bad Axe, MI If you are requesting pins/patches/ rockers, please mail the price listed on the form to us in the form of a check or money order made payable to GWRRA-Michigan. Please enter the correct membership number on all forms. My RE Info in the database can always be checked even if you ve misplaced your membership card! It s also a really good time of the year to catch up on reading or web browsing. A subject that can provide some great discussions at dinners and gatherings are self-driving vehicles. Self-driving cars have turned out to be another great invention hampered by safety issues. Self-driving technology a decade ago was just an idea; now the promises of transforming the automotive industry and even the motorcycle industry have resulted in many unplanned for consequences. It was thought that robots at the wheel would ensure safer roads for all, including bikers. Robot cars hold the ability to use sensors to see motorcycles and prevent the robot driver from cutting off bikes. Yet as we have already seen in the news, fatalities have occurred with pedestrians so those sensors are not yet proven safety features. The industry believes that motorcycle sales would increase dramatically, because each motorcycle would be surrounded by an electronic safety cage. Wouldn t it be great if our motorcycles could talk to the other vehicles on the road, informing them of our speed, our direction, and our exact location. How to use that information to avoid us is still to be accomplished. BMW Motorrad is working on the technology to see the road ahead of us as motorcyclists and alert us to curves and road and weather conditions. Warnings to slow down and/or switch lanes when possible would keep us safe. Our pleasure in motorcycle riding would be multiplied by our safety. And what about a self-driving motorcycle. Where would we get any pleasure from that? BMW Motorrad has made a video of a self-driving motorcycle public. It s awesome to watch, and looks great on a test track. BMW has been working on the technology for over two years, but there are no plans to actually sell a selfdriving motorcycle. Adding automatic safety features such as emergency braking or lane switching or staying is something they are testing in their attempts to make motorcycle riding safer, thus gaining sales of their motorcycles. Just like any technology, freedom of choice is ours. Research and technology are great; what we as individuals choose to do with the information is up to the man/woman in the mirror. Dennis and Felicia MI-DE 5

District Motorist Awareness Program Coordinators Medic First Aid Coordinators Couple of the Year Coordinator Gary & Carol Williams MOTORIST AWARENESS "Did you see that car?" "Did you see that truck?" "Did you see that motorcycle?" These are questions that should happen in conversation while riding in any vehicle. Every driver, rider and passenger should always be on the lookout for other vehicles, especially motorcycles. This is a conversation for everyone, no matter their age. The website is being updated with programs, brochures, videos, and the new monthly report page. (I thank both of the Ken's for their help with this.) Every Chapter Director received the new monthly page at the Fall Officer's Meeting. It is simple to complete. No numbers are involved, so no keeping track of how many--just if it was done. When you received the monthly page, it says that reports are due on the 12th of the month. As of January 1st, the reports are due on the 30th of each month. Please understand that these reports are completely voluntary, but very much appreciated. If you have a MA Coordinator in your Chapter, they may send us the report. Otherwise the Chapter Director may send it. If the report page is not yet on the website, and this is not the quarterly report that has been on it, then I would appreciate if you would send me an with your report. Just let me know if you did any of the following, or perhaps something else concerning Motorist Awareness. PRESENTATION 6 PUBLIC SPEECH PERSONAL CONTACTS BIKE NIGHT LITERATURE DISTRIBUTION SIGNAGE/BUMPER STICKERS PARADE MAP TABLE AT ANY EVENT REST STOP YARD SALE SWAP MEET/FLEA MARKET I want to be able to visit each of your Chapters. If you have a Gathering that you would like to have a presentation given, please contact me. If your Chapter has a Coordinator, that is great, but it is also not necessary. Any member may give a Motorist Awareness presentation. Again, please contact me with any questions. 7 District Motorist Awareness Program Coordinators Medic First Aid Coordinators Couple of the Year Coordinator Gary & Carol Williams MEDIC FIRST AID / CPR / AED Do you know what to do and say in an emergency? Do you know when to dial 911? How about the correct position for performing CPR? Have you taken a class 1 time? 10 times? Never? Do you want to know these things and more for yourself? Do you need the class to keep your level updated? Repetition can be key to knowing how to respond in an emergency. If you have never taken a class, now is a great time to become more informed on what to do in an emergency. Directors, this is a good time to schedule your MFA/CPR/AED class for your Chapter. You need at least 6 members for a class. You may have up to 12 with one instructor. You need two instructors for a class of 13 to 24, which is the maximum. Cost is still only $25 per person. You'll find the application for a class form on the website. Please submit this to me as soon as possible with your three dates listed. I need time to secure an instructor for your class. Your MI District MFA/CPR/AED Instructors look forward to sharing with you and helping you be informed. 7 Contact me with any questions you may have. 8 Assistant District Directors North Section Phil & Char Smock News from the North, It's been an exciting first year as Assistant District Directors. We've made many new friends and have had a good deal of great adventures. We appreciate the support we have received from our chapters. As Summer and Fall fade into the non-riding season, we thought a look back at our fun-filled year would warm you up and give you something to look forward to for next year. Some highlights were: Chapter Z found strong leaders in Mike and Carol Rainey, and we had several members from Chapters On-H and J2 at their swearing in ceremony. Chapter C2 Directors, Bruce and Donna Genia, were presented their Senior Director Patches and Certificates Wingless Weekend was held in Houghton Lake with Cartoon Characters as the theme. Chapter J2 kicked off the spring with their Blarney Bash party. Next up was Chapter Z's campout at Boyne Falls. That was followed by the North Section Campout in Gladwin. We had a Section Campout on Drummond Isle complete with a welcoming committee and tour guides. The Michigan Rally was held in Marshall and well attended by the North Section. The Michigan Rally theme, Hillbilly Hoot, was right on this year. We certainly had a hoot of a time bringing home the majority of awards. Wing Ding was also well attended by the North Section and we were so excited when National named our On-H co-directors, Larry and Linda Shaule, as International Directors of the Year. The Knights of the Hatchet campout saw a great turnout with members from both the USA and Canada attending in large numbers. We celebrated the 62nd wedding anniversary of John and Barb Farkas at dinner on Saturday night. We held four Section Rides that were well attended and FUN Chapter Y embraced new leadership from Dan and Lorraine Sparks during their Anniversary Party. The Fall Officers Meeting theme was financial stability for the district and recruiting and retention. At our Section Breakout session during the Officers Meeting we talked about the following Section issues. Safari Rides -We chose our destinations: 1.Kitch-iti-kipi Springs (this was suggested as a Section Campout by Chapter Z) Great idea! 2. Lumberman's Memorial in Oscoda 3. The Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park Walk of Art 4. Art Sculpture Park in Elk Rapids We also have some great ideas for our Section Rides come out of the list of choices. Feedback on the Section Rides was positive and we will schedule them for the 2019 riding season. We have suggested that our Section Campout this year be held at Kitchitikipi Springs with everyone working together on the meals, etc. 8 Next year s Section dates to put on your calendars are: J2 Blarney Bash is March 9th Z Campout is June 8th Y Anniversary Party is Sept 28th Don t forget the District and National dates also: Wingless is Feb. 15 & 16th Mich Spring Officers Meeting is April 6th Michigan Rally is Aug 7-11th Wing Ding is Aug (Some of us have reserved camp sites at the Grand Ole RV Resort) We asked officers to review their Oath of Office and handed out copies. We also handed out CD guidelines and a Recruitment worksheet to give chapters ideas. When asked what each person attending perceived as their biggest problem aside from lack of members, we received the following feedback: Lack of Time, health issues and getting people to volunteer; Participation Ghost members, the inability to communicate with them and the need for active MECs Scheduling within the chapter Needing More, longer Rides Needing limited Rides because of health issues Lack of communication We re not sure what the answers are, but we ll try to work on these issues as best we can. We'd like to thank our Ride Coordinators and Ride Captains for all the help this year. We look forward to some interesting new rides next year between our Safari destinations and Section Rides. It was, and still is, our goal to help our section build relationships between and within our chapters. We look forward to the Section Rides, Campouts, and Chapter Parties being planned for next year. They are all good ways to bring us together to share ideas, find support in one another, and make new friends. We want our members to enjoy their experiences, whether locally or on a national level. We are here to help you in any way possible to make sure you get the most out of your membership, so don't hesitate to call or us. You'll find our address and phone number listed under "Staff" or "Chapter Index" on the website: gwrra-mi.org. You can also access Facebook from the home page and enjoy the pictures of our FUN times from this past year. With all that being said, we hope you will join us next year as we strive to make the Northern Section stronger, friendlier, happier and full of FUN. That is our greatest mission, to provide for and have FUN. Again, thanks for all the support you've honored us with! Yours in Friendship for FUN, Knowledge and Safety, Phil and Char Smock, Northern ADDs

Assistant District Directors West Section Randy & Cheryl Wiggins Now that the Holidays are over and the New Year has begun it is now time to turn our attention to what our plans are for our Chapters for this year. What kind and how many rides do you plan to go on? What type of activities will you and your Chapter be attending or hosting? Will you be attending rally, participating in the Road Safari or heading down to Nashville for Wing Ding? I read in a comic strip that the New Year brings 365 days of opportunities. While we can t ride that many days here in Michigan we usually have 150 or more days of opportunities for riding (some of them may be wet) and many more for getting together with our riding families. attend Chapter, District and National events. If your chapter hasn t been active, maybe volunteer to lead or organize a ride or activity. The more involved you are the more fun you will have. Who is ready for Wingless? Are you counting the days until this fun filled event? SUMMER CAMP is the theme, have you thought about performing a skit for the entertainment night, we are looking for some acts. I would love to see us fill the hotel and the partner hotel. Lets all go to Wingless to break up the winter blues and have a lot of FUN. Hope to see you there. Cheryl and Randy Wiggins ADD Western Section I would like everyone to take the opportunity to make the most out of their membership and ride with your GWRRA family as much as you can, 9

District Webmaster & Newsletter Editor Ken Kuiper (KEK) Hello Michigan District, Welcome to As most of you know, we had to change to a new Host Server for the Website. This has caused the website to be down and/or incomplete. It is alive and well, but there are still a few things missing. If you see something just me with what you find, and I will work to fix it. The address is still the same. (gwrrami.org). Now is the time for Chapter Directors to make a decision. You have to do one of two things: First choice, buy your own domain name and host server. You can then build your own website just the way you want it, and you can put your newsletter on it. Just send me the url so I can link it to the District website. Second choice, Send me the information you want on your website and I will build your website with all your information. It s important to keep me informed with 10 news, pictures, and articles. Hopefully, you can still build your newsletter, and send them to me in pdf format. I will place it in the website for everyone to see. Happy New Year Everyone! Please send pictures and articles to me at kekuiper@outlook.com. Thank You Ken Kuiper (KEK) Michigan District Webmaster & Newsletter Editor
