13 Calculation of Windloads Acting on an Inflatable Amusement Device Introduction This report details the method used in the calculation sheet attached. Various methods have been considered, especially those contained in Fluid Dynamic Drag, Chapter 4, by Hoerner. However it was decided to use the basic approach used in Building Codes since these are more readily accessible to the reviewer and use very similar coefficients to those suggested by Hoerner. It is impractical to make a detailed analysis of the forces on individual rides, taking account of the wildly irregular shapes found on many designs. The approach here has been simplified to assume a bluff body normal to the incident airflow. In cases where the inflatable device is cylindrical, or otherwise shaped to significantly reduce the profile drag coefficient, the Engineer preparing the calculations may choose to use a reduced C D in order to take this effect into account, thus avoiding overly conservative results. Assumptions Windloads are calculated using the method outlined in the Uniform Building Code, Method 2 Projected Area Method, based on the assumption of a closed structure. This method is most appropriate for the fully enclosed rectangular bouncer. Open irregular devices may experience lower uplift loads than those calculated here due to turbulence and flow separation. It is assumed that the device is firmly anchored to the ground and that the wind does not penetrate under the unit. The calculation method used in the UBC (and all other Building Codes) makes use of a gust/exposure coefficient. This is used to factor the general wind speed over a wide area to represent the net local effect. In our case, we are concerned with the wind speeds measured at the site, hence any addition (or reduction) due to exposure is not appropriate. Gusts still have to be taken into account, and it is recommended that the wind speed used in the calculation be interpreted as the maximum gust speed, rather than the average steady speed. The safety factor of 1.5 on calculated loads, plus the generally conservative nature of the calculation method, will provide the operator with sufficient margin of safety over the specified maximum operational wind speed. Anchor Allowable Loads Ultimate pull-out loads for typical 18 x 5/8 steel anchors have been determined by test and these values are used in the new CEN Standard, pren The lateral pull-out value in that Standard is 1600N, 360lb. We have reviewed the test data used for that Standard and have included the results for vertical pull-out as well. Since the failure loads will be dependant on soil conditions, we have reduced the test values to more modest levels in order to take account of these variations. Our standard allowables are: horizontal 300lb, vertical 200lb. The larger tent stakes, measuring 36 x 7/8 or more, commonly used for the extra large slides have failure loads well in excess of 1,000lb. However the limiting factor now becomes the strength of the anchor point on the inflatable, which is dependant on the strength of the fabric and the design of the anchor point. From experience, we have determined that a typical allowable load on a single, welldesigned anchor point is no less than 600lb and this value will be used in the calculations. Considering this, it is quite acceptable for one of those large tent stakes to be attached to two anchor points on the inflatable. Sawyer, Duncan & Associates Windloads on Inflatable Rides Page 1
14 Method of Calculation Horizontal Forces P f = µ (W P u ) µ = coefficient of friction It is assumed that anchors on the leeward side are not effective in reacting the horizontal forces. Hence: P P f = H 1 + H 3 Horizontal anchor reactions will be considered equal (i.e. H 1 = H 3 ) Vertical Forces P u = W + R 1 + R 2 + R 3 + R 4 Vertical anchor reactions will be considered equal (i.e. R 1 = R 2 = R 3 = R 4 ) Overturning Moment Take moments about R 2 : M R2 = P.h - (W P u )x = R 1.2x {+ R 3 (2x + y)} Where R 3 exists, the reaction on an individual anchor is calculated by: R = M.L/ (n.l 2 ) where: L is moment arm and n is number of anchors at that location Sawyer, Duncan & Associates Windloads on Inflatable Rides Page 2
