1 29 TH ANNUAL OREGON FIRE APPARATUS & EQUIPMENT MECHANICS SCHOOL MARCH 9-13th, 2009 The School is being held at the Chemeketa Community College Regional Training Facility, 4910 Brooklake Rd. N.E. Salem, Ore , (take exit 263 on I-5, and go east one mile, and the training center will be on the right). Class study materials, lunches, and refreshments will be provided. ***Students do not have to be a member of O.F.A.E.M.A. to attend Classes.*** ALL CLASSES AND REGISTRATION WILL BE ON OUR WEBSITE, Each year the Oregon Fire Apparatus and Equipment Mechanics Association awards the Gerald Nordlund Memorial Scholarship, which is a full scholarship for one person, it includes lodging, meals, and all week attendance to the school. This year H&W Emergency Vehicles is sponsoring a Scholarship for Tuition only, for one student. The only criteria for these, is that the scholarship applicant must be in good standing with a paid or volunteer fire department, and must be involved with the maintenance and operation of emergency apparatus and equipment. Applications will be available at LODGING: For students needing overnight accommodations, we have a block of rooms at a special discount rate at the Phoenix Inn North, at the Market street exit on I-5 in Salem, Oregon. Room rates will be $70 +tax; to get this rate you must call and tell them you are with the Oregon Fire Mechanics School. The reservation deadline to receive this rate is February 9, Continental Breakfast included with rooms. Students are welcome to visit the Hospitality room at the Phoenix Inn, room 101, starting Sunday evening the 8 th, and every night after classes for networking with other technicians and the instructors. VENDOR SHOW: this year will be on Thursday, the 11 th, starting at 12:00 p.m. at the school location. We invite you to come and see what s new and meet with your equipment dealers. The Vendor Show is free & open to anyone to attend, food and drinks will be provided, along with door prizes throughout the show. ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING & BANQUET: will be held on Thursday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Phoenix Room, at the Phoenix Inn North. Dinner will be served at 6:30, with Busters Barbeque providing the dinner. Students and guests are welcome; cost will be $20.00 per person. Due to requirements by the caterer, there will be a very limited number of banquet tickets available at the door, so please order your dinner tickets early. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the evening.
2 EVT TESTING: We are also providing an Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification testing program. Students wishing to take the EVT exams on Friday morning or Saturday morning must be preregistered with the EVT Certification Commission. Students may now log-on to to download registration forms, reference material lists and learning objectives. If you don t have Internet access, you can call O.F.A.E.M.A. at to get your EVT exam registration form or Info. EVTCC Special Test site # Students need to be registered with EVTCC by February 22nd, Class Information and Registration available on line at Registration will be handled on a first come, first served basis. This association is non-discriminatory in sex, race, color, creed and/or age, as long as that age is acceptable by the fire service unit they represent. CLASS DESCRIPTIONS 2 BRAND NEW CLASSES BEING OFFERED IN THE NORTHWEST ARFF A-1 PREP: Design & Performance Standards and Preventive Maintenance of Aircraft Rescue and Fire-Fighting Vehicles. (1 day) Thursday, 8:00-5:00 Class will cover the general design and performance standards for ARFF vehicles as described in FAA Advisory Circular 10c Guide Specifications for Water/Foam Aircraft Rescue and Fire-Fighting Vehicles, and the general principles of preventive maintenance and servicing. Instructor: Walt Hazelton, formerly with American Lafrance. ARFF A-2 PREP: Chassis and Vehicle Components of Aircraft Rescue and Fire-Fighting Vehicles (1 day) Friday, 8:00-5:00 this class covers the operation and testing of the chassis and vehicle components of ARFF vehicles. The operation of the vehicle systems and components, as well as, inspections, maintenance, and repair of those components are covered in this class. Instructor: Walt Hazelton, formerly with American Lafrance Electrical Theory & Troubleshooting: (2 day) Monday & Tuesday, 8:00-5:00 Class will cover principles, operation, and diagnosis of automotive electrical systems including: fundamentals of electricity, and magnetism, charging systems, starting systems, and use of schematics. This hands-on class uses 15 large demonstrator boards to explore voltages, amperage, relay operation, series and parallel circuits, DVOM use, and diagnostics. This class continues into the shop to do live diagnostics while each student completes a worksheet, with emphasis on starter and alternator amperage testing, voltage drop testing, proper alternator and battery testing, and ground circuits. Testing in the shop is done with a VAT, DVOM, or any tool of choice. A full color training manual is included. THIS CLASS IS AN EVT F4-E2 PREP CLASS. Instructor: Bruce Amacker, Turbo Training 6.0L Powerstroke: (2 day) Wednesday and Thursday 8:00-5:00 Class will cover all operating systems for the unique engine including: glow plug circuits, fuel supply and delivery, complete HEUI theory and application, egr system, variable turbocharger, oil pump low and high pressure circuits, all plumbing circuits involved for both systems, computer and injector driver modules systems, diagnostic procedures, computer strategies, injector sleeve replacements, glow plug sleeve replacements, common problems and pattern failures. A wide variety of 6.0 Powerstroke parts is provided for demonstration purposes. The class expands on diagnostics with time spent in the shop doing live tests on running Powerstroke equipped trucks with the scan tool of choice. A full color training manual is included. 16 hours. Instructor: Bruce Amacker, Turbo Training.
3 Cummins Engines & Electronics: (1 day) Monday & Tuesday, 8:00-5:00 Class will cover the base engine, fuel system, after treatment and the Insite software on several engines. Class size is limited to 10 per day so this will be offered on Monday and again on Tuesday. Instructor: John Hernandez, Cummins Northwest Truck Brakes: (1 day) Monday 8:00-5:00 Class will cover the design and functions of air brake systems. Class will also cover the foundation brake systems. Instructor: Cliff Welch NFPA 1901 changes & Spec Writing Guidelines: (1/2 day) Thursday, 2:00-5:00 Class will cover the NFPA 1901, 2009 edition changes and spec. writing guidelines. Great refresher if you're going to be spec'ing a new apparatus. Instructor: Steve Jahn, H&W Emergency Vehicles Waterous Pumps: (2 day) Tuesday & Wednesday, 8:00-5:00 Students will learn centrifugal fire pump Operation, Maintenance, & Overhaul. Attendees will acquire a better understanding of Waterous fire pumps, and accessories, so they can operate, maintain, and repair pumps more efficiently and reliably, as well as learn of new developments in the fire equipment. This is a 2 day class, with the 2 nd day disassembling & reassembling a Waterous midship 2 stage pump, transmission, and other accessories Instructor: Nate Zenker, Waterous Company Fire Research Products:(1/2 day) Wednesday Class will cover installation and troubleshooting of the Fire Research Corp., Pressure Governors, Tank Vision products, and Flow meters. Instructor: Craig Lecy, FRC Product Electrical Equipment Installations: (1/2 day) Wednesday, 1:00-5:00 Class will cover specialty builds of command vehicles. Class will start with 12 volt basics on vehicles, clean power, grounding issues, wire sizing, terminals, and RF issues. Other topics include airbag issues, options, and current requirements on specific vehicles; wiring configurations of vehicles, issues relating to the addition of any emergency equipment, plus specific problems they have experienced specifically upgrades of older fleets halogen lighting to LED lighting and the challenges that this can present. Discussion will also encompass charging and battery systems, dual battery systems, isolators, alternator performances and upgrades, battery types, battery shut downs, (Priority Start, Charge Guard, Power Tamers). All class time will allow for two way discussions and any questions related to up fitting that may not be directly addressed in the class are encouraged. Some class time will be in the demo area. Instructor: John Moore, Auto Additions, & Patrol Power. Pierce Chassis Electrical: (2 day) Tuesday & Wednesday, 8:00-5:00 Class is an introductory course dealing with the basic (non-multiplex) Pierce electrical system found on Quantum, Sabre, and Arrow XT vehicles. This class is structured to cover location and function of major electrical components used on these vehicles. The following topics will be covered: battery & charging systems, Pierce electrical system wiring diagrams, schematics & layouts, crimping, power distribution location and harness routing, PMC II & PMC III troubleshooting, engine control DDC, Cummins, or CAT, world transmission, Anti-lock braking systems, and pressure governor. The class will also include lecture, demonstration and hands on. Instructor: Dan Bailey, Pierce Mfg. Task Force Tips: (1/2 day) Thursday, 8:00-12:00 This hands-on class covers the maintenance and repair of Task Force Tips nozzles and other products. Instructor: Doug O'Donnell, TFT
4 NFPA 1911 Overview: (1 day) Thursday, 8:00-5:00 Class includes an overview of the 2007 version of NFPA1911, the changes and new formal tests along with examples and discussion of how to perform the maintenance and testing. Also an overview of EVT certification, NFPA1071, and the 2009 version of NFPA1901, how they interact and how we can expect them to impact us. Instructor: Mike Thorn, Oregon Apparatus Repair Apparatus Pump Testing: (1 day, Friday) 8:00-5:00 This Class follows the NFPA 1911 Standards for Service Tests on Fire Department Apparatus. A Hands-on Pump test will be conducted in the afternoon. EQUIPMENT REQUIRED: gloves and helmet for actual test. Instructor: Don Gleason, Master Level III Technician, Eugene Fire & EMS Stihl Saws: (1/2 day) Friday, 8:00-12:00 Class will cover chainsaw safety & maintenance, engine theory, and hands on demonstration of field maintenance procedures. Class will break into groups to allow attendees to perform common maintenance that should happen after each use. This includes air filter, fuel filter maintenance, cooling and drive system maintenance, minor repairs starter rope, fuel filter, etc. ***STUDENTS WILL NEED TO BRING A SAW AND TOOLS FOR THIS CLASS.*** Dress appropriately, i.e. long pants, long shirt sleeves, boots, gloves & eye protection. Small Engines: (1/2 day) Friday, 1:00-5:00 Class will cover Maintenance and repair on all major makes of small engines used in the fire service. Instructor: Jeff Dunton, Rickreall Farm Supply and former volunteer firefighter. Holmatro Tool Maintenance: (1/2 day) Monday, 8:00-12:00 Class will cover the basic maintenance and care for Holmatro rescue tools, what can be done in house and should be done by Holmatro maintenance personnel.
