In PCP systems, a rotating screw -like pump is used, and the rotation movement is transmitted from the surface to the pump through a sucker rod string. These rods are manufactured under the API 11B standard, which considers the use of sucker rods in beam pumping systems applying its specifications to axial loads only. With time, the use of API sucker rods to drive PC pumps became standard. However, due to technological advances that increase the depths and rates reached, the sucker rods are submitted to very high stresses in many installations. These kinds of operational requirements increased premature rod failures, producing higher system operating costs or limiting their use. For a long time the industry had been waiting for a product especially designed to resist high-torsion loads. Now Tenaris, through the Research and Development Center of the Techint Organization, has developed PCPRod, a technological evolution that not only increases PCP reliability but also reduces operating costs. An example of this is the possibility of injecting into the PCPRod a diluent for heavy and extra-heavy oil production, improving injection efficiency and greatly decreasing installation complexity, because tubing and injection capillaries are eliminated. Development Many factors were taken into account in the creation of PCPRod Premium Connection and pipe development, including: previous customer experience, PCP users, pump manufactures, data about conventional rod failures, and the knowledge of recognized experts in PCP systems. All this information was gathered to achieve a series of requirements in the designing process of this product, and a computational model was developed, to allow joint stress analysis in different working conditions. The development project involved the following stages: Field experience data collection. Computational model development for joint design. Modeling and optimization of connection geometry. Tensile and torsion joint destructive tests; joint make-up tests. Full-scale fatigue tests (a special machine was manufactured to test flexo-torsion fatigue simultaneously with a constant axial load). Field tests in experimental wells. PCPRod 3

4 PCPRod Main Characteristics A special product was developed to work under rotating loads in PCP and to resist infinite life to fatigue. This results in a boxbox pipe and a sleeve/pipe nipple connection that allows an external flush joint, i.e. without shoulder in the joint area to minimize turbulence and local loads losses due to flow velocity. A flush connection notably reduces friction between tubing and rod generating savings due to failures decreases as well as reductions in tubing and rod consumption. Installation in the well is simple, because no special accessories such as mouth guides are required. Installation of 3,000 ft PCPRod demands approximately three hours. Elevators: sucker rods conventional elevators are used with a 1" x 2 feet pony rod and a cross over to adjust the PCPRod end at the elevation moment. Torque: the use of standard hydraulic wrenches for tubes with adapted clamps for OD 1.66" or 1.9" is recommended. The installation torque for each tube diameter is indicated in Make-Up Torque Table for Hollow Rods. No special tools are required. For a better performance, a torque electronic control device is recommended. Hanging slips: pneumatic slips commonly used for conventional tubes adapted to OD 1.66" or 1.9". Reduces by 30-50% the initial installation costs to extract identical flows in beam pumping or electro-submersible pumping systems. Reduces the installation and operating costs for diluent injection for heavy and extra-heavy oil production. Decreases flow velocity: load losses and dissolved solid erosion/abrasion decrease, while corrosion-inhibiting effectiveness increases. Reduces premature pin failures caused by over torque. Decreases rods-tubing friction: the flush joint reduces the possibility of friction between rods and tubing. With conventional sucker rods, the friction produced causes major losses due to tube punctures and tubing wall thickness decrease. Reduces handling problems: the PCPRod does not require special tools for wedging, and it can be rapidly installed (a 1,000 m column assembly requires approximately 3 hours). Accessories Tenaris develops and provides a complete line of accessories: Pup joints to adjust the string length. Combination cross-over between the API conventional thread of a polished rod and a PCPRod thread. Polished and chromium-plated hollow polished rods. Rotating heads for diluent injection. Slotted PCPRods (they allow fluid injection into the tubing). Packing and header to use up to OD 1.9" polished rods. Reduces backspin effect (pumping inverted turn when it stops). This allows the surface head redimensioning, with consequent economy. For example, a 1,000 m string of 11/8" sucker rods accumulates 41 turns in elastic deformation (string acts as a coil, and when the pump stops it turns in an inverted direction to liberate that energy). A 48 mm PCPRod accumulates only 8 turns of elastic deformation, due to its great torsional stiffness. 6 Oilfield Services
