3 In this issue 4 News The latest Hino news from around the country Inside line There s a lot of excitement around this year s Brisbane Truck Show, the number one industry exhibition in the country. Hino will launch its new GT Crew Cab Automatic model, and it represents another important addition to our ever-expanding line-up of trucks. The launch of the GT Automatic comes on top of an amazing record for Hino. Just one month before the Brisbane Show it was our privilege to present the Country Fire Authority of Victoria with its 1000th Hino truck. It was a significant milestone in a relationship which has now spanned almost 30 years. The truck was a 500 Series medium tanker and it will be going into service with the St Helens brigade, while the authority s oldest serving Hino, a 1985 GT, will be retired. We re hopeful the new GT Automatic could become the CFA s 1001st Hino and start a whole new era. It has all the credentials: in fact it s been pretty much purpose-built for fire authorities. It adds an entirely new safety dimension to the hazardous job of fire fighting. Simplicity and reliability are the keys to giving operators confidence in many of the circumstances they face. It s a credit to Hino that they ve designed the GT Automatic, and I d like to take this opportunity to thank fire authorities across Australia for their input into its specification. Hino celebrated another remarkable record recently. For the first time ever its two major Dealer of the Year Awards for metropolitan and regional businesses were won by the same companies for the second successive year. Congratulations go to Sci-Fleet Hino and the Bendigo Truck Centre, because their back-to-back awards were earned in a year of intensely competitive activity. Dealer principals Craig Andersson (Sci-Fleet) and Steve Elliott (Bendigo) encourage their staff members to achieve excellence in customer service and that s the key ingredient. In the first quarter of this year Hino launched both a new schedule of maintenance agreements, and a free-of-charge Roadside Assist service for all 2013 model 300, 500 and 700 Series trucks. 4 news Successful clutch promotion extended The six-month Hino Genuine replacement clutch kit promotion has been such a success that it has been extended until the end of June. Hino put to the test at Sandown Corporate and dealer customers took the opportunity to test drive Hino Hybrid and 500 ProShift models at the recent Sandown Drive Days. The biennial event is a joint initiative of the Victoria Transport Association, VicRoads, National Transport Commission, Transport Certification Australia, Transport Accident Commission and Roads Australia. Hino was a major event sponsor this year and one of only five truck manufacturers involved in the two-day drive program on the Sandown motor racing circuit. Hino customers drove two key models the 300 Series 616 Hybrid and the 500 Series FD ProShift. Both models have Hino automated manual transmissions, designed to combine the favourable fuel economy and durability of a manual transmission with automatic transmission ease-of-operation. Hino Australia s corporate business manager, Mike Smith, said the company s participation in the Sandown Drive Days was designed to demonstrate the quality, durability and reliability of Hino trucks. The Hino Hybrid is the world s most successful Hybrid truck and this event uses the practical setting of the racetrack to showcase the latest advances in vehicle safety, productivity and technology, he said. It was a perfect venue to highlight the environmental credentials and ease of operation of Hino Hybrid, and the quality of the new Hino ProShift automated manual transmission. It is also an important event for manufacturers to demonstrate their products to government legislators, who have the opportunity to experience first-hand the latest advances in truck technology, workplace safety solutions and best practice in maintenance. Originally slated to conclude at the end of March, Hino Australia Assistant Manager Parts and Accessories, Kirk Harrison, said the positive results had prompted Hino to continue the promotion. Overall clutch kit sales reached 110 per cent of our target, which equates to growth of 30 per cent over the previous six months, Mr Harrison said. Sales of standard organic clutch kits achieved 104 per cent of target, while light and medium duty clutch kit sales achieved 107 and 104 per cent of their respective targets. Ceramic clutch kit sales achieved a fantastic result of 130 per cent over our goal, and sales of clutch-related components remained strong during the promotion. Mr Harrison explained that the aim of the promotion was to emphasise the important differences between Hino Genuine and non-genuine clutches. Non-genuine items aren t manufactured to the same high quality standards as the Hino Genuine product, so they re likely to wear out more quickly increasing costly downtime or even fail entirely, making for a very costly repair, Mr Harrison said. The extended promotion on average saves the customer 15 per cent on clutch kits and 22 per cent on flywheels, which are ready to order now through Hino s national dealer network. 300 Series tow bar kits A new range of towbars for 300 Series tipper models is now available. The addition of this latest range of towbars means there is now one available for all trucks in the Hino 300 Series light-duty range, except for the SteelAce and TradeAce models. The new towbars are supplied as a plug and play kit, including tow bar, wiring harness and plug, all under the one part number. 50mm tow balls, 70mm tow balls and pintile hooks can be purchased separately as an optional extra. 5 news Top achievers go back to back at Hino dealer of the year awards Hino Motor Sales Australia has named Brisbane-based Sci-Fleet Hino metropolitan dealer of the year and Bendigo Truck Centre regional dealer of the year for 2012, after each dealership took out the same title in This marks the first time in Hino Australia s history that the same two dealers have won the awards in consecutive years. The metropolitan award was accepted by Sci- Fleet Hino Dealer Principal Craig Andersson. Steve Elliott, Dealer Principal of Bendigo Truck Centre, accepted the regional award. Both awards were presented by Ken Sekine, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Hino Australia and Steve Lotter, President and Chief Operating Officer, at the official gala awards dinner in Sydney on Friday 12 April. Mr Lotter said that for Sci-Fleet and Bendigo Truck Centre to back up from last year s win was a remarkable achievement in a year of improved truck sales was an encouraging sales year with a large number of customers returning to the market to replace fleets that were ageing prior to the global downturn, Mr Lotter said. With a lot of trucks passing through the national Hino dealer network it s a huge achievement to remain on top for a second year running, and indeed it s the first time it s been done in Hino Australia s history. Hino Australia would like to congratulate all of the top achievers from 2012, and we look forward to their ongoing support throughout the rest of 2013 and beyond. Both Mr Andersson and Mr Elliott acknowledged the hard work and dedication of their staff in winning their awards. Mr Lotter said the Hino dealer network was well primed for 2013, and set to substantially grow sales across all truck and bus segments throughout the year. We saw sales volumes grow 26.5 per cent in 2012 over the previous year to a market share of 15.5 per cent, up from 13.6 per cent, he said. We re cautiously optimistic for another strong year in 2013, and our dealers commitment to customer service and delivering on one of Hino s core values of exceeding expectations will help us achieve that. 6 cover feature Hino supports fire serv Hino Australia s presentation to the Country Fire Authority (CFA) of Victoria of its 1000th Hino truck marked a significant milestone in a relationship that has spanned nearly 30 years. The handover took place during the opening ceremony of the 2013 Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV) State Rural Championships, held at Werribee southwest of Melbourne on the weekend of 6 and 7 April. The new Hino, a 500 Series medium tanker, will be deployed by the CFA for firefighting duties at the St Helens brigade. Hino Australia Chairman and CEO Mr Ken Sekine, President and COO Mr Steve Lotter and Manager Product Planning Mr Daniel Petrovski attended the opening ceremony. Mr Lotter presented the keys to the new Hino to CFA Chief Officer Euan Ferguson. We re proud that Hino trucks can play a significant part in helping them carry out their important work. Peter Wright, CFA Executive Manager Fleet Services, said the majority of the Hino trucks in its fleet are used as tankers or light pumpers. The oldest operating Hino in our fleet is a 1985 GT model, which we ll be retiring with the delivery of the new Hino, he said. Adam Barnett, VFBV Executive Officer and a volunteer firefighter himself, said Hino trucks are chosen because of their reliability, the easy availability of parts and ease of maintenance. Hinos make up a large proportion of the tankers in our fleet, and the handover of the 1000th Hino truck is a significant milestone, he said. Saturday s opening ceremony was also attended by the Member for Western Victoria Region, David O Brien MLC, and the Mayor of Wyndham City Council, Cr Heather Marcus. Approximately 1000 competitors representing 42 CFA brigades from around Victoria took part in the 2013 championships. Representatives from the brigades compete against each other in events aimed at building team spirit, developing individual and team skills and promoting camaraderie among brigades, volunteers and their families. All events involve the use of basic firefighting equipment, such as tanks, pumps, hoses and ladders. The three divisions of Saturday s senior competition were won by the Napoleons/ Enfield A, Springhurst B and Dunrobin/ Nangeela C teams, while Napoleons/Enfield took out the junior competition on the Sunday. Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria is the CFA volunteers association, representing the 60,000 male and female volunteers who provide emergency response to 60 per cent of suburban Melbourne, regional cities and all of country Victoria. The volunteers train to national professional standards for emergency management and response, build community preparedness for fires and other emergencies, communicate and educate on prevention strategies and initiatives, and respond to fires and other emergencies. The volunteers also help Victorians and local communities recover from the effects of fire and other disasters. CFA volunteers are on call around the clock. They are supported and supplemented by 1,300 highly skilled paid operational and support staff of the CFA. Local and district fire brigade competitions have been held in Victoria since the 1870s, while the rural championships have been held continuously since the 1950s. 9 cover feature History of the VFBV state rural championships Volunteer fire brigades were first established in rural Victoria in the 1850s, and by the 1870s local and district fire brigade competitions were being held. The rural championships have been conducted continuously since the 1950s. While the urban championships involve mostly traditional events (including hose reels as used in the early 1900s) the events at the rural championships are largely based on current firefighting practices, with most involving tankers or replica tanker stands. The championships are a great opportunity for members to hone their firefighting skills in a friendly and competitive environment, while keeping fit and developing a strong sense of teamwork and camaraderie. 11 reliability Battery wholesaler recharges fleet with Hino Comfortable cabins, durable drivelines and excellent after-sales service has helped forge a lasting relationship with one of Australia s leading battery importers. Alco Battery Sales recently added two Hino FD 500 Series trucks to its all-hino fleet, primarily Hino 300 Series light duty and 500 Series medium duty models. The 19-strong Alco Batteries truck fleet supports the sale of premium battery brands by servicing the distribution warehouses, dealer network and company-owned retail stores located around the country. Twelve Hinos in the fleet are equipped with custom-built battery transport bodies and three have flatbed trays. The battery-bodied trucks service all regional and rural locations, travelling long distances each day to distribute automotive and valve-regulated lead-acid batteries from the warehouse. 12 new models Hino debuts new benchmark in simplicity and safety Hino Australia has introduced a new 500 Series GT Crew Cab Automatic four-wheel drive truck that builds on the popular manual version by adding a five-speed automatic transmission, combining ease of use with off-road capability and reliability. Hino Australia Product Planning Manager Daniel Petrovski said the GT Automatic was designed primarily with Australian fire-fighters in mind. Australia s fire-fighting organisations were at the forefront of our thoughts when designing the GT Automatic, Mr Petrovski said. Hino four-wheel drive trucks are used to fight bushfires in some challenging environments across Australia we saw a need to build an Automatic truck that retained Hino s off-road capabilities. It s not just a matter of convenience the simplicity of an automatic gearbox means firefighters have one less concern on their minds in what can be a highly stressful environment. To suit the needs of fire-fighting teams, the GT Automatic features an engine-mounted livedrive power take-off (PTO) as standard. The 500 GT Automatic s switchable engine PTO can operate independently of the drivetrain which enables constant operation while stationary or while in motion. Hino chose to adapt the internationally renowned Allison 2500 Series automatic transmission to help the 500 GT Automatic handle the rigours of Australia s unique conditions. The gearbox features a system called Preselect which automatically shifts down when the exhaust brake is activated, increasing driver control by ensuring the engine and gearbox offer peak compression braking and reductive force respectively. 13 Automatic tippers make light work of tough jobs new models The 300 Series is the safest, best performing, most efficient and most comfortable light duty truck on the Australian market The new Hino 300 Series 616 Short and 716 Medium Automatic Tipper models extend car-like ease of use to the light commercial truck market, making the 300 Series accessible to a wide range of drivers. Hino Australia Product Planning Manager Daniel Petrovski said the Hino 300 Series is proving to be the truck of choice in the light duty segment. Part of the 300 Series growing popularity stems from the fact that it s an extremely well packaged commercial vehicle, Mr Petrovski said. Hino s 300 Series range is the only Japanese light duty truck offering the Australian customer safety features such as Vehicle Stability Control and four-wheel ventilated disc brakes, which are hugely beneficial OH&S features considering that the majority of trucks sold in the Australian light duty market require only a regular car licence to drive. Hino is offering light truck buyers the total package the 300 Series is the safest, best performing, most efficient and most comfortable light duty truck on the Australian market, he said. By including the Aisin six-speed double overdrive automatic transmission, we have ensured that the 616 (4,500kg and 5,500kg GVM) and 716 (4,500kg and 6,500kg GVM) Tippers are even simpler to use than the already class-leading Hino manual transmission Tipper models. Mr Petrovski said the six-speed Aisin double overdrive automatic transmission has proven its reliability and durability time and again. It s a true automatic transmission which makes it very simple to drive, and it offers greater traction at take-off which is an important asset on a building site. It also makes manoeuvring in tight spaces much easier due to the exceptional slow-speed crawling ability of the auto transmission. Even though the 300 Series 616 and 716 Tippers are small enough to be driven on a standard car licence, Hino has made sure to incorporate the features of its larger models. When you add the safety of four-wheel ventilated disc brakes, VSC and ABS with driversupporting technology, such as a multimedia system with reverse camera option and the world s first DAB+ digital radio as standard equipment, a reclinable driver s suspension seat and the class-leading forward vision, it really does make the 300 Series in particular the new automatic tipper versions the pick of the segment, Mr Petrovski said. 14 hybrid Coles online commissions 20th hybrid truck Just four months after purchasing its first fuel and emission-saving Hybrid model Coles Online has commissioned its 20th Hino Hybrid for local delivery runs. The first 20 Hino 616 Short Hybrid IFS trucks are now operating out of two Coles stores in Sydney (Burwood and Pagewood), and the Richmond store in Melbourne. Coles Online made the purchase decision based on an independent fuel consumption test conducted with the Green Truck Partnership in The test was carried out in the Sydney metropolitan area using two equivalently configured trucks a Hino Hybrid 616 Short AMT (automated manual transmission) and a Hino 616 Short Auto diesel truck. The Green Truck Partnership is a New South Wales government initiative designed to provide real-world case studies for the Australian roadfreight industry on the use of clean technologies and fuels. The fuel comparison confirmed the huge potential savings of the Hybrid truck a 21 per cent reduction in both fuel used and carbondioxide emissions in favour of the Hybrid vehicle. Coles Online National Customer Delivery Manager Iain McLean said the fuel comparison test was conducted over a four-week period using data recorders in the two Hino trucks. Each truck covered about 650km a week, he said. The testers validated the information daily and excluded any data where the driving cycles of the two trucks differed markedly on a particular day. Hino Australia National Fleet Sales Manager Warwick Rissler says that Coles has 250 Hino 300 Series Auto diesel trucks in addition to the 20 Hino Hybrids. The trucks Coles has commissioned represent the latest-generation Hino 300 Series Hybrid range of eight models, launched in late In developing the current model, Hino completely redesigned its Hybrid system for increased performance and fuel efficiency, and reduced CO 2 emissions. The Hino 300 Hybrid range uses a parallel Hybrid system and a Hino M550 sequential-shift five-speed automated manual transmission for easy, two-pedal operation. The Hino N04C-UR 4.0-litre diesel engine has cooled EGR, an oxidation catalyst and DPR cleaner. It delivers 110kW and 420Nm, while the Permanent-magnet Reluctance Motor has 36kW of power and 333Nm of torque. It can be used in electric drive only EV mode in stop-start traffic (subject to the level of battery charge). The 40-cell 288-volt Hybrid battery has been proved in the Lexus RX 450h luxury SUV. Hino Australia Divisional Manager, Product Strategy, Marketing and Dealer Development, Alex Stewart, said the Hino Hybrid can take off on electric motor power only with the diesel engine idling. When accelerating or climbing a hill, it uses electric power to supplement diesel power, so the diesel operates with reduced load. And the sequential shift on the automated manual transmission makes driving comfortable. The flat torque curve from the combination of diesel and electric power means Hino can use a five-speed transmission to save on gear changes. When descending hills and braking, the clutch disconnects the diesel engine from the motor, so the motor can act as a generator and maximise the amount of electricity gathered, he said. 14 issue 22 AUTUMN 2013

15 fleet Bundaberg council turns to Hino A Queensland local government is choosing Hino models from right across the range for a number of its trucking requirements. The drivers all love them, they re excellent value for money Bundaberg Regional Council purchased its first Hino trucks almost a year ago three Hino 700 Series 2848 AMT Air models for the council s road maintenance crews. The heavy-duty rigid tippers performed so well that the council has since expanded its fleet of Hino models, with light-duty 300 Series and medium-duty 500 Series models being added to council operations. Barry White, Senior Technical Officer Fleet Services at Bundaberg Regional Council, says Hino s service convenience was an attractive proposition, and the trucks have done nothing but impress since Council took delivery. Having a local Hino service agent in Bundaberg is a real bonus for us, Mr White said. We really prefer to buy trucks with a local service facility it s so convenient for us to be able to get our warranty work done locally. That s all the work we have done on them the Hinos have been very reliable which, combined with the ability to get warranty work done here, means they spend very little time off the road. Mr White says the Hino 700s quickly proved their worth, and convinced Council to grow the number of Hino trucks within its fleet. The drivers all love them, they re excellent value for money overall we ve just been really happy with how the Hinos have performed. In the last year we ve probably put another five or so Hino trucks on the fleet a mixture of 300 and 500 Series. We ve got custom Hino 300s and 500s working as our plumbers service vehicles, and we ve just taken delivery of a 1124 Crew Cab with a crane on the back to work in our parks, moving fallen trees and heavy objects. There are also four Hino 500s on order which will work on patching with our road crews, Mr White said. StarTrack has contracted Hino Australia to supply 52 new trucks for deployment within its fleet nationally, consisting of 34 Hino 300 Series and 18 Hino 500 Series models (in both long and short-wheelbase variants). A thorough new-vehicle tender process conducted by StarTrack reviewed fuel efficiency, driveability and whole-of-life costs and included extensive trials of the Hino 300 and 500 Series truck variants. President and Chief Operating Officer of Hino Australia, Steve Lotter, said that whole-of-life vehicle costs are an increasingly important factor for new truck buyers in Australia. StarTrack s tender process is very extensive and thorough, so to be selected at the end of it says a lot about the strength of Hino trucks in the market, he said. With a projected fleet lifespan of five years or more, we feel Hino s renowned durability and reliability will be particularly beneficial to the efficiency of StarTrack s operation. At Hino we know that our trucks present favourably to drivers, but it s the cost of ownership that must be minimised to prevent businesses looking elsewhere, he said. Feedback from our field trials indicated that the Hino cabin designs are more modern than those of their competitors, he said. StarTrack s 300 Series Hinos will be used in their Run truck fleet, which consists of pantech-walled trucks used predominantly for loose carton freight. The 500 Series Hinos will join their Bulk truck fleet, which is made up of both pantech and curtain-walled trucks used mostly for palletised freight. 17 solutions Hino helps keep Sydney Harbour Tunnel clean Sydney Hino dealer City Hino has spearheaded a collaboration of suppliers to provide an innovative solution to the cleaning requirements of the Sydney Harbour Tunnel. Conceived, designed and manufactured over a five-month period, the unique vehicle is based on a medium duty Hino 500 Series GH 1728 truck and has been extensively modified to suit the specific requirements of cleaning the tunnel lights, walls and roadway. According to City Hino Senior Sales Consultant Bevan Joseph, the project was born out of the need to provide the operators of the Sydney Harbour Tunnel with a cost-effective automated cleaning solution during the short period when the roadway is closed at night. Many bespoke cleaning units designed and manufactured in Europe proved far too expensive to be viable here in Australia, which is why we set about working with our network of suppliers and the Sydney Harbour Tunnel to build a vehicle that not only did the job, but was affordable, Mr Joseph said. The truck is fitted with two external rotating brushes to clean the walls, a front-mounted spray bar to wash the road surface and a spray bar and drier to clean the overhead lighting, driven by a high-pressure pump and fully automated hydraulics. This truck is the replacement for a 1991 Hino FE Raven 800 that had cleaned the tunnel since it opened, and we were able to refurbish some of the brush equipment and refit it to the new vehicle. Combined with the engineering expertise of MacDonald Johnston, ROC Hydraulics and Gardner Automation we ve been able to not only deliver a unique and capable machine, but one that s tailored to the specific operational needs of the customer, he said. The GH 1728 is factory-fitted with an Allison automatic transmission, and has been converted to dual-steer operation by MacDonald Johnston. It is equipped with a Hendrickson lazy axle to increase the vehicle s GVM to 23,000kg, supporting a 10,000-litre poly water tank that provides enough water to clean one entire 2.3km tunnel wall without the need for a refill. The expertise of ROC Hydraulics and Gardner Automation was leveraged to convert the refitted machinery from running on an externally mounted diesel engine and electric generator to running hydraulically. Hydraulic power is provided by a pump run using a hotshift PTO. The high-pressure water pump is also PTO-driven. The entire vehicle is operated from either driver s seat, with all pump, brush and water spray controls located inside the cabin for safe and efficient operation. Mr Joseph said the vehicle is fitted with watersaving water jet blaster nozzles to reduce water usage and make vehicle operation more efficient. We extensively trialled the vehicle, including crew training to iron out any bugs and ensure all operators were comfortable with the significant differences of this truck compared with the old vehicle. It s an impressive vehicle to see in operation combined with the renowned reliability of Hino and quality of the engineering we expect to see it carrying out this very important job for many years to come, he said. 18 training Hino donation helps next generation of mechanics Hino Australia is adding to the learning experiences of automotive mechanical technology (heavy duty vehicle) students through the donation of Hino engines and transmissions to Wetherill Park TAFE (WPT) in Western Sydney. The donation, made in November last year, consisted of two medium duty diesel engines and two gearboxes. These joined WPT s diverse range of training equipment, including engines from trucks, cars and mining equipment. WPT Plant and Heavy Vehicles Head Teacher Phillip Cue says the two Hino diesel engines and transmissions are used to train a wide range of students on various mechanical principles and methodologies. The engines and gearboxes donated from Hino are a valuable part of our training assets, helping students recognise differences in components across manufacturers and demonstrating different construction techniques, Mr Cue said. We re very grateful to Hino these donations really contribute to the range of knowledge of our students We use the engines to teach valve settings, liner heights, capacity measuring, oil pumps, cooling systems, cam timing, engine tuneup, pre-assembly checks and assembly procedures. And the gearboxes can show students differences in rebuild procedures with synchromesh and non-synchroboxes, assembly tolerances and sequences, correct tooling and other underpinning trades skills, he said. We re very grateful to Hino; every bit of assistance we can get is a blessing. With our limited budget and the prohibitive costs of components to use as teaching resources these donations really contribute to the range of knowledge of our students. The donations allow the teachers to demonstrate the technology commonly used in heavy duty vehicles and machinery today. A working knowledge of current technology is a priority in our course delivery, Mr Cue said. Hino National Training Centre Manager Sergio Bonvini says that Hino is always looking for ways to improve its relationships with industry, and is glad that the donated engines are providing good learning opportunities for WPT students. We re happy to be helping the next generation of mechanics by making this donation, Mr Bonvini said. These engines and gearboxes provide the students with the chance to look at the latest Hino engine and gearbox technology and common-rail fuel systems. We re hopeful that many of the students using them will end up servicing Hinos full-time once they ve completed their studies. WPT teaches over 11,000 students about practical aspects of automotive technology. Approximately 800 of these are apprentice (heavy duty) mechanics.
