Common Challenges, Common Future Japanese Auto Manufacturers Contribute to the Competitiveness of Europe s Motor Industry 2018

About Established in 1967, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. (JAMA) is a non-profit industry association which comprises Japan s fourteen manufacturers of passenger cars, trucks, buses and motorcycles. JAMA works to support the sound development of the automobile industry, domestically and globally, and to contribute to social and economic welfare. As directions in auto manufacturing increasingly influence the world we live in, JAMA takes its role and mission ever more seriously, on the road to sustainable mobility. Contents Foreword Investing in the EU Japanese Automakers EU Production versus Imports EU-Made Japanese-Brand Exports Worldwide Japanese Automakers Purchases of EU-Made Parts New Investment and Employment in the EU EU-Based Partnership Projects Automotive Ties between Europe and Japan News from Our Members

Common Challenges, Common Future Beyond the Motor, Beyond Borders Collaboration between the EU and Japan for innovative and sustainable mobility Since the launch of an alliance producing commercial vehicles in Portugal in 1971 and of full-scale passenger car manufacturing operations in the United Kingdom in 1986, Japanese automakers have made extensive investments in the European Union, based on the principle of building automobiles where significant demand exists. Over the years they have become an integral part of the European landscape, conducting their business in Europe as constituent partners in the EU economy. JAMA member companies currently operate 14 production plants and 17 centres in the EU. In : - Those plants annual vehicle production totalled 1.51 million units, of which 287,788 were exported globally. - In JAMA member companies EU-based operations and in related distribution, sales and other activities, 169,629 people were employed across the EU. - JAMA member companies purchases of EU-made parts in value terms totalled billion. The auto industry today is facing a once-in-a-century period of major transition in regard to the very nature of mobility, while critical challenges including climate change, energy sustainability, urbanisation and greying populations are at the forefront of society s concerns. To address these issues in the development of future mobility, new technologies will need to be applied in the areas of connectivity, big data and artificial intelligence, among others. Automakers are accelerating their efforts to introduce to the market high-quality next-generation vehicles, including electrified models, equipped with automated-driving functions and connected systems. Meanwhile, because automobile manufacturing depends on global supply chains, it will remain necessary to promote the development of a fair and open business environment facilitating trade and investment for greater auto-sector sustainability. In that context as well, the challenges that lie ahead cannot be solved solely by the motor industry or by one country or region. Instead, Japan and the EU should work together, across borders, on the initiatives that will need to be undertaken. In such efforts, JAMA believes the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement will serve as a constructive and robust framework. The fact that Japan and the European Union are principal partners who share the same fundamental values will be a driving force for collaboration, at both the public and private levels, under the beyond the motor, beyond borders concept. 3

News from Our Members Mazda The Mazda6 is the flagship of Mazda's passenger car lineup. The development team's goal for this third upgrade since the model was fully redesigned in 2012 was to enhance efficiency and enjoyment for people who love cars, by incorporating premium details and new engineering concepts and technologies based on Mazda's human-centered design philosophy. The new Mazda6 wagon unveiled at this year's 88th Geneva International Motor Show in March follows on the heels of the sedan model introduced at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. The wagon adopts the same product upgrades and styling improvements, which enhance the look of maturity and composure and raise the "quality feel" of the interior and exterior without sacrificing practicality. Both the sedan and the wagon offer driving pleasure that suits the usefulness of each body type. Mitsubishi Mitsubishi Motors Corporation celebrated two debuts at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show: the European premiere of its e-evolution CONCEPT and the global premiere of its 2019 model-year Outlander plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, which will be introduced to the European market early this autumn. Both the new Outlander PHEV and the e-evolution CONCEPT embody the cutting-edge technology and expressive design MMC is making its own, today and for the years to come. They also express, each in their own way, MMC's product strategy as part of the brand's ambitions: a carefully crafted blend of SUV expertise and electromobility technology, augmented with state-of-the-art system integration technologies for a progressive driving experience. Mitsubihi Fuso Mitsubishi Fuso's ecanter was launched in Europe in November and handed over to its first European customers in December last year, in Berlin. The all-electric ecanter allows customers to take advantage of an emissions-free, light-duty truck that is economical as well as environmentally friendly, not to mention dependable, maneuverable, and quiet, as the solution for clean urban deliveries. The ecanter is only the first of many vehicles from Mitsubishi Fuso's E-FUSO product brand, exclusively devoted to all-electric trucks and buses, which are to be developed over the next several years. 14

Common Challenges, Common Future The all-new 2018 LEAF is the next generation of the world's best-selling zero-emissions electric vehicle and the icon of Intelligent Mobility. s recording-breaking EV has attracted more than 300,000 customers worldwide since it first went on sale in 2010, and one new LEAF is now being ordered in Europe every 12 minutes, making it the region's fastest-selling electric vehicle. This latest generation offers even greater range, dynamic design, class-leading advanced driver-assistance technologies and enhanced connectivity. It is the first model in Europe to feature s autonomous ProPILOT technology as well as e-pedal, which allows drivers to start, accelerate, decelerate and stop simply by increasing or decreasing the pressure applied to the accelerator. The 2018 LEAF has been named Best Electric Car at the 2018 What Car? Awards in Europe and has also won other prominent awards around the globe. Subaru Subaru is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. The company took flight as an aircraft manufacturer in 1917 and built its first mass-produced car in With its single-minded focus on developing safe, fun and reliable products, it has concentrated on the production of cars featuring its symmetrical all-wheel drive and boxer engine. It also developed its own EyeSight driver-assist technology. Built on Subaru's new global platform, the 2018 Subaru XV and Impreza models offer this distinctive combination of features. Euro NCAP awarded both models their maximum five-star safety rating and their Best in Class title in the small family car category. The 2018 Outback, the first model to pioneer the crossover segment in Europe 23 years ago, was facelifted and includes refinements in basic functions and equipment, infotainment features and safety technology. Launched in Europe in October 2015, the Mirai, the world's first hydrogen fuel cell sedan, is a pioneering zero-emissions car which emits only water vapor. The Mirai benefits from over two decades of research and development on fuel cell technology and its world-leading experience in hybrid vehicle power systems. In 2015 the car was launched in the United Kingdom, Germany and Denmark; in 2016, in Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden; and in, in France. Its distribution will expand to other countries in Europe in future. In making the Mirai available in the market, is introducing innovative powertrain engineering and technology that can contribute significantly to a cleaner future. 15
