2 JATO CONSULT CO 2 REPORT EXTRACT This report continues JATO s focus on the average CO 2 emissions of new cars in Europe, and the effect of market trends and product actions. INTRODUCTION This report covers the full year 2014 in JATO s on-going study of the new car market in Europe, putting a particular focus on the official CO2 emissions of new cars sold and registered. The automotive industry has come under intense environmental scrutiny in recent years, with immense pressure applied by the legislators, media, customers and stakeholders alike. The one thing which the industry can be sure of as it moves forward, is that the issues of environmental sustainability, accountability and the rising tide of consumer awareness are unlikely to diminish with time. THE REPORT The European Commission has been influential in drawing attention to, and setting targets for the reduction of CO 2 emissions from new vehicles across the continent. European Legislation has set legal targets which the major motor manufacturers must meet, phasing these targets in during the years 2012 through Signs of Change Actions by both the car industry and national governments are driving consumers towards a lower CO 2 future. With the first two years of the implementation of targets now complete, this report investigates how individual markets, manufacturer groups and brands have reduced their volumeweighted average CO 2 emissions, whether they have met their 2014 targets, and how far they are from meeting the 2015 targets defined in the regulation. It also includes analysis by segment, and identifies trends in fuel types and vehicle weights. 3 The 23 markets, of which 21 are EU member states, covered in this study are, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and The Netherlands. National governments have introduced vehicle taxation strategies based on CO 2 emissions, raising the consumer s interest in low-emission vehicles. JATO has studied the volumes-weighted average CO 2 emissions of new cars registered since 2003 in these European markets. Building on JATO s global intelligence and experience the following questions will be addressed: How successful have CO 2 taxation strategies been? How have different manufacturers fared in the quest to reduce average CO 2 emissions? How much progress is required to meet the targets for 2015? EXTRACTS FROM THE REPORT Manufacturers continued to reduce the emissions of their products, driving average emissions for the year down to 123.3g/km, a 3.5g/km improvement over In 2014 more than 75% of all new cars sold in the countries covered by this study had official CO2 emissions of 140g/km or less, compared to only 23% in Electric and Hybrid cars have a double benefit for manufacturers. Not only do their low emissions lower the corporate average, their heavy battery packs raise the corporate average kerb weight, and hence the emissions target. EU published a regulation on 23 April 2009 stating that 65% of new cars would have to meet a target of 130g/km in 2012, 75% in 2013, 80% in 2014 and 100% in 2015, with an additional 10g/km reduction to come from complementary measures. The Netherlands achieved the position as the country with the lowest average CO2 emissions of new cars in 2014, at 106.8g/km. All Rights Reserved JATO Dynamics Ltd 3

4 All segments recorded a reduction in average CO2 emissions in 2014 compared to The SUV segment recorded the greatest reduction of 6.5g/km to achieve an average of 152.1g/km. The B-segment remained the largest in the market by volume in 2014, with a market share of 26.2%. It was closely followed by the C-segment, which closed the gap last year after increasing its share to 24.6%. The B-segment, led by the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo, is the largest in the European car market. The segment averaged CO2 emissions of 111.2g/km in In 2014 Renault was the volume brand with the lowest average CO2 emissions in Europe at 108.4g/km. This success can be mainly attributed to the efficiency and strong sales of the 1.5-litre turbo diesel and 0.9- and 1.2-litre turbo petrol versions of the Clio small car and Captur small crossover. The plug-in hybrid version of the V60 has made a significant contribution as it qualifies for Super-credits, as have the conventional versions of V40, V60 and S60 which also have low emissions. The most-improved model in the top 20 was the Nissan Qashqai, with emissions falling 20.8g/km to 115.7g/km. Again this is due to a new, more efficient generation of the model having been introduced, featuring downsized turbocharged petrol engines and improved diesel engines. Plug-in Hybrid accounted for almost 20% of the brand s European volume in The group was over 60% inside its 2014 target and is already over 22% inside its 2015 target. The most improved model overall was the Cadillac CTS. While this is a very low All Rights Reserved JATO Dynamics Ltd 4

5 volume model in Europe, the introduction of a new generation led to a 52.4g/km fall in average CO2 emissions to 234.4g/km. With average CO2 emissions of 101.2g/km in 2014, the Toyota Yaris was the lowest-emitting of the top 20 best-selling models in Europe, helped by hybrid versions accounting for just over a third of the model s sales. The Lexus CT was the lowest-emitting model without a plug-in version for the third year in a row, with average CO2 emissions in 2014 of 91.3g/km, while Peugeot s 108 was the lowest-emitting non-hybrid/non-ev model at 94.1g/km. METHODOLOGY JATO researches new car specifications at an individual version level in over 40 countries and new car volumes in over 60 markets worldwide. For many countries, including the 23 covered in this report, JATO matches sales/registrations volumes to individual versions within its specifications databases, creating its Model-Mix databases. These databases allow volume analysis including high-level prices and specification items. One of these specifications items is the official CO 2 emissions rating, as measured on the EC fuel consumption test cycle during vehicle certification.
