Your 2004 EVA dues must be paid no later than the day of our February 4 th meeting in order to maintain your membership and flying privileges. Our Club By-Laws specify that annual dues are payable on or before January 1st and are delinquent after the February meeting. Members whose 2004 dues are not paid by the day of our February 4 th meeting will be deleted from the EVA Club roster effective February 5th and will no longer be entitled to use the Club facilities or receive the Club Newsletter. In addition the combination of the gate lock will be changed to the new, 2004 combination, on Feb. 5th. The Bylaws also establish a maximum of 250 members and provide for a waiting list of applicants including reinstatements when the maximum membership has been reached. Members who fail to pay their dues must apply for reinstatement, pay a $10.00 reinstatement fee and all dues that are in arrears: Call Verlin Boeder (602) if you have any questions about dues. EVA annual dues are still just $40 for Single and $50 for Family membership. See Verlin s Treasurer s Report for the address to mail in your dues. # New First Aid Kit In late December someone cut the lock on the gate and broke into the field. The only act of vandalism or damage was to steal our first aid kit from the storage shed. On January 11, we replaced the first aid kit at the field. I placed the new kit in a water tight sealed container and fastened it with a bungee cord underneath the gray wooden table at the east end of the ramada. It will be fine there. We had someone get cut (finger in prop) just a couple of days prior to this and no first aid kit was available. This should solve the problem and I think we need to let the membership know where it is located. Gene Coleman # February Membership Meeting Valle del Oro RV Resort Wednesday, February 4th 7:00 pm Located at 1452 S. Ellsworth, Mesa Directions are: Go east on Highway 60. Exit at Ellsworth. Valle del Oro RV Resort is just north of the Freeway on the left. Tell the guard at the gate that you are here for the RC Club meeting and they will direct you to the Theater. You can t miss it.

2 PRESIDENT S PODIUM by Mickey Ohland, EVA Vice-President Over the past couple of months it has been nice to see the field busy with activity. Be it fun fly events or field workdays, you, the members of EVA, should be proud of the work that has been accomplished. I would like to thank all of the club members who helped complete the installation of the carpeting this past month. Special thanks should be given to Gene Coleman for leading this effort. With the field looking as good as it does and with the weather as nice as it has been, the number of pilots and planes at our field has definitely increased. Because of this, we all need to continue to make safety a priority. We are all responsible for the safe operations at our field. One thing to keep in mind is that a thorough inspection of your airplane before you fly is a good idea. Sometimes we lose sight of this. Although it is not all-inclusive, I have included a pre-flight checklist later in this issue for your use. There are several events coming up at our field to support and participate in. On Wednesday, February 4 th the VDO flyers will be holding their second annual Fogey Fun Fly. This event will take place from 1:00 4:00. Outsiders are welcome to attend. On Saturday, March 6 th we will be holding our annual spring fun fly in and swap meet. This will be a non-competitive event promoting our club and the hobby of r/c model airplanes. Detailed information regarding this event will be posted at the field. One last thing, I talked to Olen Trenary last week. Olen expects to be back in Arizona toward the end of February. Olen indicated that he was not getting much flying in because it is so darn cold in Colorado. I did mention to Olen that we are having to live with clear skies and temperatures in the mid 70 s. Olen wanted me to pass along a big hello to the EVA membership. I will conclude with one thing to remember If you only have to bend over once to pick up your plane, it is considered a good landing. Have fun and fly safe, Mickey # Pre-Flight Checklist As we all know, every R/C plane has an expiration date, but it s a secret! However you can insure that your plane will last as long as possible by performing a pre-flight check every time you get ready to fly. Mickey Ohland has provided us with the following checklist which you should consider using if you haven t developed your own system. A through pre-flight is necessary not only for the longevity of your aircraft, but also for the safety of us all. Pre-Flight Checklist: Internal (Remove wing if attached) 1. Servo mount, servos, servo arms secure (safety clips) 2. Push rods secure 3. Receiver and battery padded and secure 4. Check for loose items that could foul servo or pushrod movement 5. Check for fuel leaks. tank area fuel-proof Wing 1. Check for breaks, warps, etc 2. Insure center section is adequately reinforced 3. Check aileron pushrods and ailerons clevises (if equipped) before securing wing to aircraft 4. After wing is in place, check for proper incidence and alignment 5. Control surfaces attached securely (aileron, flaps, etc) Engine Area 1. Firewall area fuel-proof 2. Check engine mount, engine, muffler and prop nut and/or spinner 3. Check prop for nicks, cracks, etc. 4. Check nose steering mechanism (if equipped) 5. Check cowl secure (if equipped) Tail Section 1. Check vertical fin, rudder and rudder clevis for security 2. Check tail wheel security (if equipped) 3. Check horizontal stabilizer, elevator and elevator clevis for security Range Check/Starting Engine 1. Ensure radio batteries have been adequately charged 2. When frequency pin is available, attach to antenna and range check aircraft with

3 antenna collapsed Check to ensure all flight controls and engine controls move in the proper direction 3. Check flight control surfaces are in proper trim 4. Fuel aircraft 5. Start engine Upcoming Events The VDO Flyers will sponsor the second annual "Flying Fogies Fun Fly" (or the 4F event) at the EVA field on Wednesday, 4 February 2004 from 1:00 to 4:00pm. Any member of the EVA or the VDO clubs is welcome to participate, but the emphasis will be on noncompetitive events oriented to the more mature flyer roughly defined as 55 years of age or older. AMA or MAAC membership is also required and the safety rules of the EVA and the AMA will prevail. This will mean that any member of the VDO who is not a member of the EVA club will need an EVA club sponsor to fly. We will fly between three and five events depending on time. The event coordinator is Russ Petersen who may be reached at or russ@rjpetersen.com. Modest prizes will be provided. East Valley Aviators will hold its annual Spring Fly-In and Swap Meet on Saturday, March 6, This year it will be a noncompetitive, fly-what-you-brung format. Tentative prizes will be awarded for the prettiest, ugliest, most unusual planes plus some unannounced prizes. Of course we will have free food and drink, a raffle and more... More details will be included at our future meeting and in the newsletters. # Minutes of EVA Meeting January 15, 2004 Complied by Gene Coleman, Secretary, EVA The January meeting of the East Valley Aviators was held at Palmas Del Sol East clubhouse on January 15 th, Board members present were Vice President Mickey Ohland, Treasurer Verdin Boeder, Secretary Gene Coleman and Safety Officer Kerry Wheeler. Past BOD members present were past President John Pomroy and past Treasurer Don Manchester. There were also a total of 68 members in attendance. Vice President Mickey Ohland led the meeting as our newly elected President Olen Trenary was still in Colorado. Mickey mentioned that our spring fun fly would be held on March 6, 2004 at the field. This will be a non competitive event and a family fun day with the usual hot dogs and soda being served. Next Mickey noted that our First Aid Kit was stolen from the field and we were in need of it this past week as a member got his hand in a prop that required many stitches. A new First Aid Kit has been placed underneath the wooden table on the east end of the ramada and is in a seal tight container strapped to the underside of the table. Next Mickey noted that the VDO flyers were holding their second annual Flying Fogies Fun Fly at our field on February 4 th 2004 from 1 PM until 4 PM. Outsiders are welcome to attend. The VDO flyers will also have their annual swap meet this coming Sunday, January 18 th 2004 at their clubhouse located at I-60 and Ellsworth road. Our guest speaker this month was Rick Powers, Commander of the 1/8 th Air Force. Rick gave us all a short informational talk on what the 1/8 th Air Force was all about. Their main focus is on the building and promoting of scale model airplanes with particular emphasis on the fine detail of model building. They will be having an event this spring which will be held in March and details are found elsewhere in this issue. Most of us did not realize how far reaching this organization is with members all over the world. Rick was joined by other 1/8 th Air Force members Mike Peck and RJ Powers. We would like to thank these gentlemen for donating their time to come to our meeting. Verdin Boeder gave us a rundown on the number of renewals he had processed and the number of people who had not renewed yet. All members have until Feb 4 th 2004 to renew. Gene Coleman stated the need for putting identifying information on your equipment. Gene currently has 2 TX S and a battery and starter with no identification. I think we need to insure that all new members have identified their equipment properly and encourage all of the membership to place some form of ID on their equipment. The club is currently reviewing the wording of our lease to determine if this is from way back in I think the last century along legal or not. The show and tell department was overflowing with beautiful models this month. First Doug Sharpe brought in a beautiful ARF Tiger Moth which was recovered by his brother in San Diego. It was a work of art and flies equally well. Next Don Manchester showed us his SIG Citabria, beautifully done in red and white monocote. Don plans on installing a Super Tigre.45 for power. Don Methfessel continues to amaze us all with his old timer stuff and had 3 engines

with some glow fuel from days of yore. Where do you get this stuff Don? RJ Powers, (from the 1/8 th Air Force) displayed his very nice 4 bladed P-51. The plane uses an OS.60 FP engine.

Thanks RJ for sharing your talents with us. Dave Boldt brought in the framed up wing from an AT-6 Texan that he is building that has flaps and Robart struts. Extremely nice workmanship also. Next Harold Ansell showed us his first attempt at kit building and it was a beauty, a Cobra sporting an OS.46 FX in the nose. Can t wait to see his next Systems. We are always looking for input from all of our club members. Lastly John Berger showed us his very unusual Tufflight plane that resembled a morphodite of sorts since it resembled a little bit from several other planes. John states that it flies very well and is highly maneuverable. I imagine we will be more of this sort of plane at the field as imaginations run the gamut. To close the meeting we had our usual raffle prize drawing with several gallons of fuel and other niceties going to lucky members.
