4 Automating Gates? Read this Automating existing gates Existing manual gates can be automated but there are a few points you should note: The mounting position for any gate operator is determined by the position of the hinge (i.e. the point around which the gate rotates). Mounting dimensions supplied with all gate operators will give the position at which the operator must be fitted in direct relation to the hinge. Since most existing gates were not hung with automation in mind it is not unusual to find that the required dimensions for mounting some operators are not achievable without modification to the hinge position, the gate position or fabrication of a bracket to suit a specific application. Post mounted gate operators with a telescopic action* have mounting dimensions which are related to the length of the working stroke of the ram. (See Mounting Dimensions diagram on page 4) This type of operator will generally fit to gate posts of mm square (4 8 ) if a bracket is made to suit the hinge position. On wider gate posts and brick piers it may be necessary to either cut a niche in the pier to accommodate the operator, move the gates back on the post or choose another type of operator. * PHOBOS, ORO, LUX, P 4.5, P 7. Underground gate operators** generally require that the operator drive shaft should be aligned with the top hinge of the gate in order that the shaft and the hinge are plumb and rotate through the same axis. This means that the centre of the existing gate hinge must stand clear of the face of the post by 60 or 70mm dependent on which type of underground motor is selected. (See Mounting Dimensions diagram on page 4) If alignment cannot be achieved some underground operators can be fitted outside the hinge axis by up to 200mm by utilising off axis arms which use a roller and channel. (BSC) ** ELI 250, SUB. ORO OPERATOR PG 11 SUB MOTOR PG 14 Operators with an articulated action (BFT Model IGEA and VIRGO) have more flexible mounting dimensions. These motors will fit directly to the rear of small and large gate posts up to a maximum distance of 300mm behind the gate hinge position. You should check that there is room behind the gate in the open position to accommodate the articulated arm. (See Mounting Dimensions diagram on page 4, and relative operator pages) Automating new gates When automating new gates exactly the same rules apply as detailed for existing gates above, but with one major benefit: You can hang the gates to suit any operator type for a neat and quick installation. Select the gate operators required by: Size and type of gate, Duty required, Aesthetics required (Call us for advice).then position the hinges and hang the gates to easily achieve the specified mounting dimensions. IGEA KIT PG 9 Selecting the right operator The selection of gate operators detailed in this catalogue have been designed to suit various applications and budgets. The specification for each operator gives information referring to the size and weight of a single gate leaf. The type of gate and the use it will get should also be taken into consideration. WIND EFFECT: A closed panel gate will be affected significantly by the wind, whereas an open pattern gate will offer little wind resistance. Imagine trying to hold on to a 6ft square panel in gusty conditions! This sail effect warrants an upgrade in equipment specified and may require the addition of an electronic lock. (i.e. V90 VIRO mechanical lock, pictured right) V90 VIRO LOCK PG 30 DUTY: Will the gate open 10 times a day or 300 times a day? Take note that gate operators are built to suit different duty cycles. POSITION: A gate at the end of a cul-de-sac in a quiet residential area is going to get a more protected life than a gate on a main road next to a school or a pub. Gates exposed to the public sector or in multi-user situations (apartments, etc) should be fitted with electronic locks to protect the operating system from damage. 2

6 BFT Swing Gate Motors Making the right choice Electro-Mechanical equipment is generally designed for the domestic user and has a duty cycle which suits family residences and entrances that are not busy throughout the day. Electro-hydraulic equipment is generally designed for a higher duty cycle and is suitable for busy entrances and prestige gates. Our hydraulic gate operators are fully serviceable and, if properly maintained, will give many years of reliable service. Post mounted operators (Mechanical or Hydraulic) are fixed to the gate post and a sturdy cross member on the gate. It is important that they are fitted to specific measurements in relation to the gate hinge. Please refer to the Mounting Dimensions diagram, shown below, to check suitability. Underground operators (Mechanical or Hydraulic) fit below ground level and it is important that the operator driveshaft aligns with the gate hinge. Please refer to the Mounting Dimensions diagram, shown below, to check suitability. If you cannot decide which system suits your application best, please call you local BFT distributor for assistance. A = Measurement from hinge centre to face of gate post SUB MOTOR ELI MOTOR A = 65mm Minimum A = 70mm Minimum If not achievable use off axis arms Call for details NB: IMPORTANT INFORMATION All operators with a telescopic action require accurate mounting dimensions to be achieved in relation to the gate hinge. (i.e. the axis on which the gate rotates) These dimensions depend upon the length of the operating stroke of the ram. When installing telescopic action operators to existing gates 4 some modifications may be required to the gate hinge position or to the gate post. As many existing gates are hung in a non specific manner, it may be necessary to fabricate a tailor made bracket in order to mount the operator in the correct position. N.B: Failure to observe correct dimensions will result in poor performance, reduce the life of the operator and affect the warranty of the unit. Most operators run on a timed sequence (set at the system control panel) and gate stops are required in the open and closed position of the gate. 7 Preparation Guide In preparation for automation of your gates you will need... BASIC CABLING: l 240v 10a power supply to one side of the entrance. (with isolator and suitable RCD) l 50mm Duct across the entrance, surfacing behind each gate post. l Suitable cables for gate operators and accesssories. Conduit, glands, clips and junction boxes. l Control cable for intercom (if selected) between the entrance and the phone hand set in the house. l A control panel enclosure large enough to accommodate all control equipment selected. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: l A level driveway beneath the swing of the gates. (If possible) NB: Additional cabling will be dependent on systems selected. If your system layout includes: PHOTO ELECTRIC CELLS, LOOPS OR OTHER CONTROLS... all cables must terminate at the control panel. l Gate stops in the open and closed position of the gates. l Free swinging gates with good hinges. No play and no tight spots. l You must accurately achieve the gate operator mounting dimensions in relation to gate hinges. (See page 4) BFT RECOMMEND THE SERVICES OF SPECIALIST INSTALLERS l See required dimensions for model of gate operator selected (ie; SUB, LUX, etc.) These dimensions are fixed and may require modification to gate posts or hinge positions. It may be necessary to fabricate a tailor made bracket to mount the gate operators to existing gates correctly. l You will need suitable fasteners to mount the gate operators to your gate posts. These fasteners will be under continual stress and must be suitably fitted to a solid mounting point. 12 BFT Model ELI 250 Mechanical Underground Operator, 230v & 24v versions available OPERATOR DIMENSIONS Situated below ground and aligned with the gate hinge, the ELI 250 motor provides a neat and inconspicuous automation system for ornate swing gates. The ELI 250 is an electromechanical operator suitable for use in domestic applications. Integral gate stops (within the foundation box) assist installation. Ground stops are recommended for heavy gates. The load bearing foundation box can be pre-installed, when hanging the gates, and the motors retro fitted. 3 Models of ELI 250 motor cater for different gate sizes & opening angles: ALIGNMENT It is necessary that the centre of the driveshaft boss on the operator foundation box be aligned with the centre of the gate hinge in order that they rotate through the same axis. These rams are a popular choice for ornamental domestic gates as they are one of the smallest and most compact hydraulic rams available. 16 BFT Model SUB A complete range of hydraulic underground operators The SUB name covers a range of hydraulic underground operators designed for different gate sizes and opening angles. All SUB models are high duty, high quality operators suitable for domestic, multi-user (apartments) and commercial applications. The CPS is a heavy gauge load bearing foundation box that will support gates of up to 800kg. The box can be installed as the lower hinge of the gate and the SUB operators retro fitted without disturbing the gate. The is the premier range of underground operators for quality gates and busy entrances. The BFT SUB Motor is the choice of thousands of professional installers. For reliability and longevity of service the SUB unit is hard to beat. BSC Non locking SUB motors (E, ER, GE) require an electronic lock to be added to the system. All SUB motors operate through 130 degrees apart from SUB G which operates through 180 degrees. In order to attain this alignment the hinge centre must be clear of the face of the gate post by 65mm. The operator will support an 800 kg load and it is recommended that it replaces the lower hinge of the gate (i.e. not installed below a pair of existing hinges) The operator runs on a timed sequence set at the system control panel. Gate stops are required in the open and closed position of the gate to stop the gate before the operator reaches the end of its travel. A sliding gate does not need the space a swing gate requires to open. This leaves the full length of the driveway usable for parking vehicles. Rising Bollards provide a neat solution to preventing the passage of vehicles without the requirement for gates and have a minimal impact on the environment for town centres and historic areas. 24 BFT Automatic Barriers For commercial and industrial premises BFT provide a range of traffic control bollards and rising arm barriers to suit a variety of applications. These are fast acting systems, moving from open to closed positions in 3 to 8 seconds, and suitable for busy entrances where an automated gate would be too slow. Barriers and Bollards are used both stand alone, and in conjunction with security gates which are closed out of normal business hours to provide intruder security. A wide range of access control equipment; Radio controls, Card readers, Loop detectors etc, can be interfaced with these units to suit the requirements of individual entrances. 27 BFT Barrier information BARRIER FOUNDATIONS BFT Barriers will fix either directly to a well prepared concrete base, or can be fitted to a steel foundation plate (Ref: BB) preset in concrete. When laying foundations note that the tip rest should be aligned with the boom clamp on the relative side of the barrier casing in order to receive the descending boom accurately. Barrier Control options: BFT Barriers are supplied with integral multi function control panels, allowing connection to the full range of control and safety accessories: Card reader, Intercom system, Digital entry pad, Radio control, Loop system. Consider radio controls as a control option. They require no installation time and no pedestal or ancillary equipment associated with other controls. This provides a cost saving and is a plus if the area is close to public access where vandalism is an issue. Individually validating radio controls are available. 31 Battery Back Up BT BAT BATTERY KIT: (pictured right) Suitable for the following operators: PHOBOS BT, IGEA BT, DEIMOS BT, EOS Garage door operator. BT BAT The BT Bat system allows operation of the above 24v motors during power failures. Power from a pair of dry cell batteries automatically cuts in when the system controller detects the power supply is down. This back up system is supplied in a small SD enclosure which matches the control panel enclosure. This is an essential accessory for areas prone to power failures. KIT 800 UPS: 230V MAINS BACKUP (pictured right) Suitable for 230v swing gate operator systems: LUX, SUB, ORO, PHOBOS, IGEA, ELI 250. 32 Locking Systems Electronic locks release on operation of the automation system to allow the gate/s to open. Locks are required for all non-locking (reversible) operators and are recommended for any gate on a multiuser site, or any gate over 2500mm. There is a lot of leverage over the width of a gate. You wouldn t fit your front door with a lock the same side as the hinges, or a drop bolt at the hinge end of a manual gate, so why dispense with this logic when the gate is automated? The selection of locks below cater for most applications. Lock mounting plates are generally tailor made for specific applications as existing gate / post lay-outs vary greatly and locks and keeps should be mounted accurately. Locks are either supplied with a transformer or powered directly from the system control panel. V90 VIRO EBP 24V DROP LOCK Mechanical Locks V90 VIRO LOCK 12v: (pictured right) The Viro V90 can be mounted vertically (ground latch) or horizontally (post latch) and is supplied by Gates Systems with both keeps. The lock wires directly to the lock output on the system control panel and is supplied with 2 keys. The lock body measures 130mm wide x 105mm deep (used horizontally) and is zinc coated. EBP 24v DROP LOCK: (pictured right) The EBP lock mounts to the base of the gate and locks in to a floor mounted plate (provided). The lock is energised and lifts its bolt whilst the gate operator/s are running, then drops in place when they time out. The EBP lock is provided with a 240 / 24v transformer and 2 release keys. The lock body measures 218 x 70 x 70m. AUTOBOLT EBP E: With extended barrel for wooden gates also available. AUTOBOLT: Ground stake (pictured right) The Autobolt is a non powered spring bolt that mounts to the base of the 1st gate to close. The 2nd gate pushes the bolt into the ground plate (not provided) on closing and is locked to the 1st gate with an electronic lock (i.e. Viro or magnetic lock) Magnetic Locks Magnetic locks are supplied with armature plates and the two are held together magnetically when power is applied. The armature plate is allowed to float on its mounting plate in order that it squares up face to face with the magnet when fitted to uneven surfaces. On single gates the magnet can be fitted to the slam post and the armature to the gate, alleviating the need to run a cable across the moving gate. Mounting plates are generally tailor made by the installer to suit individual applications. The exterior rated magnets below provide up to 500kg (1200 lb) holding force. 35 Access Control Induction Loop Information A loop is a coil of wire set in the road surface and connected to a loop amplifier (detector). When powered the loop projects a magnetic field above the road surface to detect metal masses (vehicles). The signal received by the presence of a vehicle can be used to control opening and closing of gates (Normally open contact) or as a safety feature (Normally closed contact). Cutting & Coiling a Loop In surfaces such as tarmac and concrete the loop slot should be cut 30 50mm deep. The size of the loop will be dependent upon the roadway and the loops intended function. Ideally loops should be no less than 1000cm square in size and no closer than 900mm from a moving metal object (gate/barrier). A typical loop of 2000mm x 1000mm should have three turns. Large loops with a circumference of greater than 10 mtrs should use two turns, whilst small loops with a circumference of less than six metres should use four turns. Using the correct amount of turns will enable full use of the choice of sensitivity settings available at the detector. The loop tail returning from the loop to the detector should have the wires twisted a minimum of 15 times per metre. Please pay attention to the installation guide supplied with our loop detectors. When fitting loops under loose surfaces (gravel drives etc) the loop can be made up within a suitable rigid plastic conduit. These loops must set well below the surface and placed in a channel back-filled with concrete to avoid flexing when vehicles pass over. The system is completely wireless. There is no cabling between the entrance and the building and no cabling or additional intercom handsets within the building. Your system is simply uploaded with your desired phone number/s, installed at the entrance and switched on. DRGC01 AUDIO & DIGIPAD Up to six separate telephone numbers can be called making the system useful for entrances serving multiple properties or allowing a single user to have the system call landline numbers at home or work, or a mobile number wherever you may be. In all cases the telephone that receives the call can be used to operate the gate/door from any location. The system calls your existing telephones. What will it do? Multi way call panels can handle up to six separate telephone numbers/properties (including mobiles). A dial in feature allows you to call in to your system and operate gates/doors from anywhere. A two call button station for a single property allows the caller to contact separate numbers if one is engaged or unanswered. A maximum of six separate relays (including a latching contact) can be operated using your existing telephone handset to control the same number of functions, e.g; doors, gates, lighting etc. DRG GSM CONTROLLER How does it work? It is a fixed cellular link i.e: A stand alone telephone using a standard SIM card. The SIM card is programmed with the number/s you require it to call prior to the unit being supplied. The call button at the entrance rings your phone and you use your existing telephone keypad to open the gate/door. Keeping the intercom live The unit will be supplied with a PAYG SIM card. Check that the SIM card is suitable for the site in question. This card can be kept in credit either on line, over the telephone or by direct debit. Intercom conversations are generally very short; just a few seconds to establish the identity of the caller, keeping running costs of these units very low. Network coverage and achieving a good signal It is essential that the site requiring the intercom has good network coverage if the unit is to function clearly and reliably. The best network for the site should be established by the user or installer and the correct SIM card installed. To optimise the signal received, the unit must be located away from electrical interference and the antenna provided must be mounted in an elevated position.
