Energy: a changing context Electric Vehicles Photovoltaic HVAC & Heating pumps Residential Storage Microwave cooking Induction cooking Smart appliances 3 3
Where energy benefits could come from REFRIGERATION LAUNDRY CLEANING AIR COND WATER HEATER Pre-cooling prior to peak Optimize defrost to run it during off peak Delay start: remote auto start for laundry cycle to off peak hours Dryer short delay and/or power down heating element Delay start: remote auto start for laundry cycle to off peak hours Short delay and/or power down heating element Auto set from cooling to dehum Reduce power during peak hours Suggest settings Plan water heating based on tariff and energy availability Reduce power during peak hours Smart Appliances account for ~43% of the residential electricity consumption! They can provide flexibility in the way and timing they can be used (source: CECED Italia) 4
Analysis of the demand flexibility (italian residential customers) Bellifemine, Bella (Telecom Italia) Gallanti, Maggiore (RSE), to appear on: L Energia Elettrica, August 2014 Disaggregated Load Profile (data from 1000 customers) Demand Side Flexibility 60% of the energy demand is flexible! What if 20 Million customers 6 GW of flexibility between 19:00 and 21: GW of flexibility over all 24 hours 100 GWh/day of flexibility F. Bellifemine, SI.I.OIR Aggregator 5
Cost-Benefit Analysis User Category ADDED VALUE / year Prosumers High contractual power users Every Consumer Optimal self-consumption of generated energy from 30% to 60% Overload control: change the max contractual power (from 4.5 kw to 3 kw with same energy consumption) Energy awareness: self-optimization of energy consumption -5% / -10% consumption Dynamic pricing schemes: reduction of cost (*) For the future Demand-side Flexibility: new revenue stream For the future Conclusions: for some classes of users the payback is in 3 years under some conditions!! Notes: Values reviewed by RSE, Enea and CECED, taken from a public Confindustria document, which includes also the cost analysis. Cost estimations based on average consumption in Italy kwh/year, tariff «maggior tutela», data from trovaofferte AEEG, 3Q2013 (*) 190 for a consumption of 4047 kwh/year, 240 for 2700 kwh/year 6 6
Association No-profit Association founded on 2012, where competitors collaborate to create a market Scope: define a smart home architecture and protocol. Thanks for let me discover that.» Energy [kwh] Trialists Washing machine: my average energy consumption in comparison with the other trialists «the verdict was very cruel to me given that only a family with four members has consumed more than me, while I have consumed more than other families with five and four components, and all the other trialists have consumed much less than me.» «We attempted to reduce costs by operating appliances such as washing machine and dishwasher in the off-peak times, but we can get small cost savings. However I am satisfied with seeing the other participants' consumption because I am in the middle of the classification, even if of course I would be pleased to further improve my position» Trialists 26 2
